Upgraded Intercooler...what style did you use?

Recommended Posts

Just curious what style/size intercooler you are using if you have upgraded.  I'll be down for a few more months, and among the many things changing, I'll have to build new IC piping, so no better time to change intercoolers than now!  I haven't taken the stock IC out to measure yet, had a lot of other things going on.

If you have any pics that would be great help too!  Thanks!

Here's a dumb question.. ;D

I know that bar and plate ic's are better.. But is there any effects of flipping it upside down.. Like instead of having the IC pipe inlet/outlet on the top, flip it so it's on the bottom..  i'm thinking hot air rises, so you'd want the pipes at the bottom.. Then again, air wouldn't rise inside of the IC..  Ahhh  nevermind..LOL

Yes in static situations, hot air rises. However, in an intercooler (this is how it was explained to me) at entry, it is all hot, so who care, it cools down over the fins, and then exits as colder air (at least that's what one hopes).

I was looking at those intercoolers too. I wonder how good the quality on them are. I plan on throwing something bigger on my car since im going mpi. I'm going to ditch my ovcp setup.

if thats the yonaka? intercooler from streetimports.com, you may wanna hit up the dsm boards to see what they have to say about em - not all positive.

There are some 'taiwan' intercoolers poppin up on the scene that look VERY impressive, on par with a greddy etc... My neighbour bought a 12x24x3, under $300 shipped (same thing here, can't tell from photo?). I'll buy one and monitor in/outlet air temps.

It'll be interesting to see what these coolers do the market, who have been raping folks for a long time with ridiculously priced fmic. Spearco must've peeped over the horizon and seen 'em coming, then bailed/sold out to turbonetics

Well a name of a intercooler will only go so far, especially now that you can build you own for pennies on thier charged dollar.

I think that is alot of what is going on now, people, companies buying the cores that are named, and adding their own end tank, afterall an end tank is an end tank. Same size/shape, who the hell cares who made it...

In the end, you have a hellofa good intercooler for a fraction of the price.

Yea, I don't think I'd order one of those off of Ebay, it is cheap, but think of what the "cost" you'll have in an intercooler when that one is a piece of s*** and you have to buy another one!  Where can you find these Tiawan FMICs?

i have a FUSO intercooler, and man its pretty good size, but the end caps are just funky. they come off at about a 45 degree angle, all funkdified.

i think 3" inlets on an IC are to big, so i went 2 1/2" in my mind.

there was another mitsimoto IC that was the same dimensions but just 2 1/2".

soon i am going to need a bigger BOV to go with my Bigger turbo!

I seem to like Turbo-xs, maybe a RFL?

whats a good valve, thats not to inviting to other guys? but enough of a threat to scare away the V-TEC?!?!?

anyone have any C.A.R.B stickers i can have hehe.

i have been preaching this intercooler for a while. its one of the best out there and the price is reasonable. i am sure it can be found cheaper elsewhere. the grandnational guys use these all the time.

they can be ordered with the inlet and outlet on the opposite side for MPI setups.

There's a few pictures of my aftermarket intercooler. I had a friend weld braces for it to be installed. Fit's perfectly only had to trim a bit of the air damn off to make it fit.

I believe the intercooler was a 24x10x3 with 2.5in inlet/outlet. Bar and plate style speacro core..... Love it....

wow...those end tanks are huge!  Atleast look like it when mounted on the car.  I was looking at a 24x12x3, but I only want to trim as little as possible, this is the one I was looking at: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...;category=33742

I'm going to measure today and see how much wider I can go, I'd like to get a core thats bigger than 17" and take advantage of the wide open air dam we have!

That intercooler beleive it or not fits right inbetween the front bumper supports. I like it, and of course I'm going to need it with the MPI conversion that I'm going through. Good luck finding one that works out for you...

Thats a very nice IC, my friend got one for his Thunder Bird Super Coupe. I went with a factory IC but made larger end tank 2 1/4 to be exact ;D flows very nicely

The style Art is preaching about (top-bottom flow) is better from a thermodynamic perspective (shouldn't matter much whether it flows up or down).  Most of your heat transfer occurs in the first part of the "pass" and it(heat transfer) tapers off fast the farther you get from the inlet.  So it is beneficial to have a shorter pass with more surface area in the flow direction.  The drag(pressure drop) is also proportional to the length of the pass, so this should have less pressure drop as well.  If only it wasn't $475, I'm a tightwad student!
