First time taking an engine out and apart!

Well I woke up today with high hopes of having the engine out of the quest I just bought. Thankfully, everything happened even beyond my expectations. A huge thanks to my Dad (Dad here on the site as well) for answering any of my questions and for being so willing to teach me.

Here are a few pictures of what happened today. A total of 13 hours of labor so far into the car. This is my first quest, second car, first engine pull, and the best time I have ever had working on a car before.

Right after the engine was pulled:

Skip(left) and my Dad(right), just after the motor was out:

New stage 2 clutch as well as an already lightened flywheel. I will be upgrading to an 88 flywheel so I may or may not sell this setup:

The flash ruined the picture. Essentially it is showing where the head is indicating that it was overheated:

Here is a better picture yet it still blurred. Must be a shy head. You can somewhat see where the metal in the center melted:

Here is a picture of myself prying a bit at the main thrust bearing cap (if I recall correctly):

Picture of the engine bay with the motor removed:

My Dad and I taking a look at said bearing, note the "tongue in cheek approach I took":

Me getting a lesson on just how small 1-7 thousandths of an inch really is:

Block with the crank out of it:

Some of you may know of the dowel pins or keys that are in place on the balance shafts and oil pump. Well when we were taking the 2nd one out this is how it went:

*Dad hits the pin with a screwdriver and hammer*

*I look at Dad* - "Did it come out?"

He looked at me with a blank look.

*CLUNK, from wayyyyyy across the building, all the way to the other corner* - The sucker flew!

Pretty much everything on this engine wasn't torqued. I really hope the previous owner didn't pay someone to do such a crappy job.

Where the turbo manifold goes towards the block, you would normally have your gasket, washer, then the nuts. Well what we had was the washers, gasket, and nuts. It was ridiculous.

We found out why the motor was considered blown...rod 2 had spun a bearing and in doing so, warped itself. Rod 3 also damaged its bearings, but wasn't quite spun yet.

Part of the head gasket was crushed INSIDE towards the timing. As a result, a ton of silicone was used by the previous owner to seal the leak on the outside.

The spun bearing from Rod #2:

The damaged bearings from Rod #3:

Its hard to tell, but possible. You can see how the rod warped itself inwards when it spun the bearing.

Pile of parts:

The last thing for the day, the block sitting in the cleaner.

Well what do you guys think? Not too bad for a first timer with 13 hours invested. I really did have a blast with this thing, and I can't wait to work on it more. Thanks Dad!

So that's what my dad looks like. Wow. It's amazing what 5 years can do to you. I'm definately not drinking disassembly lube.

  • 3 years later...
From reading the topic I thought, oh no, another newb pulling apart his motor. This is not going to end well. Then I saw who your dad was. lol. I am guessing it will go back together just fine. Awesome job.
