I'm in agreement with alot of other guys who've posted so far. Reliability, smooth idle, fixed leaks, etc should take precedence over all "modifications", be it audio, performance, etc. Read the FAQ, get your car running right, and then dive into mods.

The big thing lately has been getting rid of the distributor and using a Ford style coil pack. In order to make the coil pack fire, you need that trigger wheel and sensor....and megasquirt.

I put mine in the oven @ 250* for ~10 minutes. Softens the glue up enough to pull them apart without damaging anything, but leaves the glue intact to where you can reheat the glue and they'll reseal.

Turn them down to at least halfway for the first 250-300 miles, you run the risk of blowing out the valves otherwise. (Break in procedure I was given by the guys from KW while putting coilovers on a C70, same advice HKS gave my buddy with an Evo 8)

I see very little truth in what people have told you. The only truth that I see the the stall rpms. If I brake boosted mine, it would build 5-8psi off the line (stalling at ~28-2900). Just stomping it, it would begin making boost as low as 2k. i was at full boost usually no later than 33-3500 on the stock 12a. A S16g will make you plenty happy.
