Oscar_the_Grouch
Hello all again Been away for a long while but never quite left.Been asked to start producing the BBK KIT again due to the recent search for a company to make them or trying to put a kit together and doing all the R&D from scratch. Why bother with re-inventing the wheel when its been already done and tested. ALL R&D was DONE (Back in 2005) and KITS been in use ever since without any incident.Prototype and over 80 working kits have been sold all over the world without a single complaint.Rotors and pads are universal and not going to be discontinued anytime soon and available everywhere local and on line. These KITs are being sold as "PARTIAL" or "INCOMPLETE" or "70% Complete" KITs whatever you want to call it these are NOT COMPETE KITS. Why? Simple...1- There are too many options out there for rotors and pads so its impossible to make a one size fit all BBK to please everyone here.2- For those with limited budgets you can buy the parts at your own pace as your budget allows3-This way there's no liability on my end. DISCLAIMER:These are OFF ROAD USE ONLY kits and not DOT approved kits by any means. So if you are not handy with tools or familiar with brakes I'd suggest you have these installed by a Pro-Mechanic. AGAIN GUYS, Brakes are your life DON'T PLAY with your life. Many of you just want to go faster but the faster you go the faster you need to stop too.GENERIC LINKS within this post are generated by the site and Im NOT in NO WAY associated with the links or what they link you to/with. Brakes as seen through OEM Wheels ( Old Cast Calipers )http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t229/Oscar-the-Grouch/2007986222_5a33154101.jpg The specifics are listed bellow. Please read the FAQ's bellow and If you still have any questions please ask. Quick FAQ's Q- What does the KIT includes ?What do I get for my $375.00 ?A- (See NEXT 3 pics bellow) it includes:All custom Steel bracketsSpacersHardwareFront Brake linesFull detail Step by Step set of instructionsPart numbers for all universal parts (Caliper, Pads, Rotors) needed to complete the KIT. Hardware and brackets are STEEL not Aluminum. Aluminum Brake hardware on STREET driven vehicles is just a mistake IMHO. NONE of us is going to benefit from a 4lb weight reduction. We are NOT racing for money, we do not have big sponsors so please dont make a HUGE deal about weight. Keep in mind that BRAKES will save your live, so dont trust your brakes to Aluminum Brake Components These brackets you see in BLACK are powder coated.YES those are aluminum spacers, they are a NO stress part and carry no load.http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t229/Oscar-the-Grouch/20.jpg Rotor Spacers bellow WILL NOT be powder coated to further reduce costBesides its not needed.http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t229/Oscar-the-Grouch/2007969724_222d81cad9.jpg Complete set of hardware all Grade 8 Steel where neededhttp://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t229/Oscar-the-Grouch/2007173733_54a68b6d59.jpg Part ComparisonOEM vs NEW Big Brake parts:http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2387/2007193525_b537eb49c2_z.jpg?zz=1 http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t229/Oscar-the-Grouch/pads1.jpg Q- Will these fit/work with OEM Wheels?A- YES all 5 bolt wide body models SHP and Non-SHP alikeThe kit uses rotor spacers for rotor clearane these spacers will push your wheels OUT Aprox 1/4" Q- Do I need to modify anything to install the kit ?A- NO, this is a COMPLETE BOLT-ON. No cutting welding or hacking off your car. You can always go back to OEM if you choose to do so. Q- Can I use OEM or OEM Steel Braided lines?A- NO you cannot, the lines needed are longer than OEM. Q- Can I use/keep the OEM master cylinder?A- Yes you can. The OEM master has enough volume to push the 4 piton Wilwoods as long as it is in PERFECT condition it will work just fine. If in doubt replace it for a new unit. If you are concerned in any way there's another option in caliper selection that I will also send you along with the rest of the KIT. With the standard caliper selection you will get a bit more of pedal travel about 1/4" to 1/2" with the lower volume calipers (Also 4 piston) you will get LOOSE about 1/4" to 1/2" of travel so the pedal will grab higher and thus the tendency to lock up the front tires faster will be an issue until you get used to it. Q- Will I need a Brake Proportioning Valve?A- NO you don't have to have one, but its recommended you install one just to better balance your brakes front to back. Another good idea if you have not done so already is eliminate the ABS unit this will help with a better pedal feel no matter what caliper you choose. I ran without it for almost a year so I got used to it. After I installed one the car felt better balanced under hard braking. Q- Do I need to eliminate my ABS system?A- NO you dont have to, but it will make the BBK work better and you'll have better pedal feel. Q- Any test data on this KIT ?A- Yes I tested the prototype which is the kit I currently have on my car and all the info and test data will be listed bellow shortly. Q- What calipers does the kit use ?A- The kit is designed to use either a 4 or a 6 piston Wilwood Calipers. Wilwood 4 Piston sell for $160ea 6 Pistons sell for $350ea. 4 Piston Caliper http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t229/Oscar-the-Grouch/fsl_big.jpg 6 Piston Caliperhttp://www.lpiracing.com/catalog/billet_superlite_6_radial_mount-lg_212_detail.jpg Q- What rotors does it use and will they be readily available ?A- The KIT uses BWM rotors these are and will be available for a long time. Price ranges with rotor options and brands ( Plain, Drilled, Slotted, Drilled/Slotted, Dimpled, Curved, Vained, ect, ect, ect ) $60-$200 I suggest to go to "Race Concepts" or any other online supplier for these that they can re-drill for Mitsu lug pattern prior to shipping and this will save you the trouble of doing it yourself later. Q- What brake pads are available?A- There are a TON of brands and compounds ranging from $50 to over $300 a set. Street to FULL race and anything in between. A nice set will run you $80.00 this is a new compound from Wilwood that is both street and track friendly. Q- Why not include all the parts ?A- This way its affordable for anyone. Buy the main kit now and buy the calipers rotors and pads later as budget allows. I provide ALL part numbers and were to get these universal parts. ALL parts NOT included in the kit are UNIVERSAL parts that are and will be available for a long time. Also this allows you to save money on shipping by buying locally and also saves you the price markup of a third party. So hunt your own best deal and save more. Also this is a way to sell the kit without liability. A complete KIT carries liability but if its sold in pieces or sold as PARTIAL it does NOT have any liability. AGAIN guys this is NOT DOT legal and sold as OFF-Road use ONLY. Q- How many kits have you sold ?A- I believe there are aprox. 35 kits out there. Including some sent overseas to UK, Australia, Ireland, USVI, Puerto Rico, HI, Mexico and plenty here in the US. Q- How long of a job is this to do by an average Joe with average Mech skills?A- Its an easy 60-90min job or less with no special tools required. Its all bolt on with clear instructions and plenty of photos so anyone can do it.BUT PLEASE KEEP IN MIND you are working on BRAKES and if you have ANY DOUBT that you cannot comfortably complete the install DO NOT DO IT. Brake jobs are simple but if you screw up once it may be your last time. So PLEASE DON'T TAKE A CHANCE IF YOU ARE NOT SURE. This is what you will end up with after all parts are pourchasedhttp://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t229/Oscar-the-Grouch/BIG-BrakeKIT.jpg LAST ORIGINAL GB HELD located atthe link bellow:http://www.starquest...topic=72897&hl= If you have any questions not listed or answered above please don't hesitate to ask. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TEST DATA PLEASE note the driving condition ,tires, wheel size and take all of that into consideration as you WILL experience DIFFERENT results as ALL of these factors are taken into effect. Lunacy
Hey Oscar. After grabbing this hardware kit off you a year or so back, after not getting the braided lines ive had trouble finding some over here. Were yours coated braided ones (clearcoat on outside of metal braid)? If so what would a set of these run me? Thanks again, very happy with the kit itself

Convette
All the power to you for providing more products to the community, but do not try to discredit other parts in doing so. Oscar_the_Grouch
All the power to you for providing more products to the community, but do not try to discredit other parts in doing so. I have a lot of opinions also, but I'll keep them to myself. Ooooookay....Here we go again....Been back on the forums for a week and already see not much has changed in the past 8 years. Everyone posts what they like or don't like about a product and that's fine in my book I don't see it as "Discrediting". If there's something about this product you don't like or have an opinion about PLEASE POST IT for all to read and I will address it. Regarding your product I simply stated that I would not use aluminum in High Stress, High Load brake components used on a street vehicle. Also stated that a 3 pound weight savings on a car that is not a pro racer is not worth your life. I'm NOT bashing nor discrediting your product, I'm not even competing with you, the buyers of your product will not buy mine. All I have an issue with and wanted to address it as any buyer would question a new product is your choice of material. You seem to be very capable machinist, I'm not, but just because its easier to machine a part out of aluminum does not make the better material choice. I think I saw one comment about the use of aluminum and you replied with "Its been used on racing teams for a long time" or something to the like. Back to my original point... For racing GREAT not much liability there. Not so much the case for street use.My opinion and observation as a potential buyer. This may be the shortest comeback in the forums history.... Convette
Your wrong. Do some research on brake components and materials before you post useless information. Again, more power to you for bringing an over priced product to the market. Edited May 21, 2013 by Convette

Oscar_the_Grouch
Oscar didn't you have these in 13" rotor too at one time? Yes it was a custom order and minimum run of 3 kits. Did not make it into production on my end only the company that finalized the engineering added to their list of kits. Not a big interest in it back in the day. Thanks

Oscar_the_Grouch
wait are those alumnium calipers? whoaaaa thats a terrible idea. Aluminum brake components cant be trusted. haha I don't know about the rest of you but I can actually comprehend what I read. But just in case let me say it again. I would not use aluminum for brackets on brakes or high torque high stress applications. The key word is "I" as in an individual. Those calipers are designed, engeneered, tested, re tested, race prooven over and over again and backed by Wilwood's 36 years experience and history in the business. So whenever you can claim the same then I won't "discredit" your aluminum brackets that you made in your garage. Bottom line is I will put my trust and money on Wilwood aluminum calipers, but never on a home made "aluminum" brake bracket or component.I'm sorry but it's a no brainer to me. I can explain this to you all day long but I cannot understand it for you.Thank you for your comments.Good luck with your GB. OTG
BC_99
Ok guys, you both have similar products to sell. Convette, this is his gp, no need for this kind of antagonism. Stick to yours. Oscar, the same company whose 36 year record you are standing on, is the same company that makes aluminum brackets that are almost identical to the ones you are saying aren't safe. So, that makes your entire arguement invalid. You are wrong about machined aluminum brake parts, including caliper brackets. I have built and raced cars that have and will see hundreds of times more heat and torque and stress than any SQ ever will, except for maybe Convettes. All of them had this style of caliper mount. In this case you are simply misinformed, and are spreading incorrect information, or perhaps an opinion, as facts. Your product is a very viable option and something I wouldn't mind owning, but the other guys stuff is plenty safe and he has proven so with his own car and reputation. Stick to the FACTS, and sell your parts. I wish you both luck in your sales. BC_99 Edited May 23, 2013 by BC_99
Shaggy_TSi
He clearly said it was his opinion; that HE does not trust aluminun components on HIS car. Yes he did stated his opinion and urged others to follow him, but who doesnt want that? Also, if someone is buying convettes they wont need these, theres no need to argue here. I saw convettes brackets, but he clearly said they will not work with stock rims, thats why I decided this was my route.

vanillagorilla
Can I suggest we all keep on topic. If it keeps going this way the entire community will loose at least one and maybe two valuable resources. Think of your cars guys.

This is a great kit that I am strongly considering. No doubt about that. Both have their merit. I wasn't wanting to add to the argument, just the opposite. Oscar, my apologies if my comments seemed to add to the drama. You can add me to the list as I love our stock wheels and do want better brakes. BC_99 Once again "Britt" I gotta hand (no punn intended my friend) it to ya... you stepped in as a mediator, in gentlemanly fashion. &... with a personal knowledge lending professionalism as to fact or fiction. I like you, also like the choice of using our stock wheels as well... & also the use of larger wheels, since the choice of high end tires has narrowed so drastically lately in 16". Hense... I 1st purchased John's setup, which I find very affordable, durable I'm sure, & never a worry about available "stang" parts. I am also aware of Oscar's repp with his setup of past years, although never owning any. (couldn't locate/gone in 60 seconds) I am seriously think'n of jump'n on his setup as well. First gonna add up the bottom line on the setup before move'n ahead. (seems to be in the same range as the "Big Brake setup sold online/ebay?" depending on choices of setup w/ Oscar's, deciding on what my needs vrs. my wants are w/ regards to using my stock wheels. (also like the "bolt-on" feature, for me. ) Most likely, I will follow suit as you Britt, just in having choice, since I have more than one StarQuest. I agree w/ Britts statement whole heartedly, as to a truce. As I for (1), would be that customer leaning to purchasing "both" systems. But many thanx again Britt, for step'n up as you seem to usually do. Edited May 23, 2013 by kidjc
