06 Hemi Broken crankshaft

Hey guys figured id post here real fast and warn you not to buy any Hemi motors from the 06 year ranges in that area.

Mine is in a 06 dodge durango very well taken care of oil changes ect.Has 150k miles on it and the crankshaft broke in half.Bet you wouldnt see this happen on a Chevy 350 motor.

Anyways ive tried to contact dodge and get them to at the very least send me a new one and they claim this is no problem at all so they dont address the issue.

So ive talked to several Machine shops that work on these motors and have been told that these motors are prone to crankshafts breaking. They see quite a few.Well as luck would have it my crankshaft broke as well.

So again i was just posting here to warn you about the issues so you dont fall victim to buying one of these lemon motors that dodge has out on the market.

as a matter of fact dont buy any dodge motor that ends in a 7 ..specifically here the 5.7 liter v8 hemi.

if anyone has access to a cheap crankshaft let me know plz! this is a major hinderance to my finacial stability lol.

Eh, I made a comment in a post about the new Durango where I was asked "what's wrong with the Dodge engines?" Well, this is it.

Although the most common problem with those Dodge engines is valve seats dropping, specially in the rear most pistons and of course, that grenades the engine. I have a customer who's shop specializes in them Dodge engines, he loves em! It's hella good business for him, his shop is riddled with new Chargers and Durangos. And it's not just the '06's, it's all the entire model line up.

That blows man. It's a pretty penny to get them engines fixed.

I'm a Dodge guy and currently own my 3rd 4.7L engine.

I've not had any problems with mine nor heard about widespread failures either, aside from the 4.7l sludge issue(which I believe I've solved with mine thus far).

Sucks that that happened. I feel bad for you.

yea its expensive.ill fix it though.love the power and all when it runs right. but a casting flaw on the crank is a known issue

by shops that work on these motors.

just wanted to get the word out a little since the dodge/mopar represenitives treated me like poop.

ahahahahhahahahah .... sorry but AHAHAHAHAHHAAH I have always though almost everything they made has sucked. (flame suite on) why do you think they didn't make our cars?

All of those motors (the new one's) SUCK on camshafts. My next door nabor is the city mechanic and all the police cars and the one's used by the city oficials the camshafts are waring out in under 20K and it's not just the cops beating them. The killer is the camshafts are dirt cheep like 30-40 bucks made in Mexico but they screw up allot when they go, and lifters were MAJOR money on them. They also gave them a major run around about the waranty on them.

You've beaten the odds so far my friend. But them Dodge engines do grenade themselves. Much like the Ford Focus SOHC 2000-2005 and the Ford Escorts, they drop valve seats.

I was at my friends shop this afternoon and a guy walks in asking for one of them Dodge engines. I told him, "wait, let me get you a chair, you're gonna need to be seated when you hear this!" lol I don't think he thought it was funny!

Thats because they get the infamous "Hemi tick" and people drive them anyway and don't have the top end readjusted.

But, thats the first I've heard of the crank issue. I just know my dad had an 03 Hemi Ram and beat the hell out of it for 30k miles, traded it at 140k for a new Challenger...

Never had an issue.

Me and him must have good luck with our dodges...haha I've never had a problem with my 5.9Ls or their transmissions and he's never had an issue with his hemis.

That does suck though...I wonder if they were torqued wrong from the factory?

What's the Hemi tick and what is adjusted?

I happen to have an '06 that has a tick going on. Has been for a couple years.

Never thought much of it.

My friends dad had a durango with a hemi... Master mechanic, always well maintained engine... It threw a rod through the block, then they got a replacement engine in it that also threw a rod through the block. Edited by Frenchi934

Wow....some guys must be CRAZY unlucky.

My dad has an 04 5.7 hemi ...120k+ miles...no problems.

I had an 05 5.7 hemi....wrecked at 30k miles :'( but NEVER had a single problem and ran stroooong.

Cousin has a 06 dodge charger 5.7 hemi and has never had a problem at is at 80k miles.

Not a single engine problem ever in any of these :-\

eh, realistically speaking, a motor that has a "hemi tick" or so to say from the factory is in my book, poorly designed. Valve seats coming off, and loose valve springs, starvation of oil to the rear rockers, etc.

Those are things that should be addressed when designing a motor & before its sent out to production. I think they got lazy. Want a reliable dodge motor? grab an old LA block from the 60's. Should fit right in. ;)

Say what you will.....but mine with the 4.7L was owned by a guy who wasn't very careful about repairs or maintenance, and it still runs strong.

158,000 miles on it, and it's still quite good. Of course, now I have it, and take proper care of it, but it was mistreated earlier in life.

Valves need adjusted if I remember correctly. Just like the old 60s hemis...hahaha

While I'm a chevy guy (till the Ecoboost Ford engine anyways) my wife drives a 5.7 Chrysler Aspen and it's been fantastic.

To play devils advocate the GM LS engine should have never had piston slap but they dang sure did.....my LS1 did it something awful and even the LS2 in my GTO had a hint of it till fully warmed up. Both of those were day one too....not something that developed down the road.

I'm sure my beloved Ford Ecoboost will turn out to have something....but maybe not as bad as the 5.4 Triton's eating the valvetrain
