Conquestdetaco
Is that battery holder from tep? If so, does anyone know how much it is?
artinist
yes, i think its around $
importwarrior
yes it is a tep pic, i just posted the pic of the design i liked, i think it is in a very good location and centered on the car. i would rather weld it between the towers, rather than bolt it to the struts,
artinist
I am moving mine front the rear trunk to the rear passenger seat. (lower center of gravity and closer to the center of the car) I will cut a hole in the rear seat behind the driver and this box will poke out of it a little. if someone has to seat there(which is next to never), then can sit on this box. $89 from summit http://store.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/sum-e890101.jpg
heefner
that box looks nice but if for some reason you needed to charge the battery or take it out, 8 bolts and nuts looks like it would be a pain in the a**.
backslider
i like this design!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.racetep.com/arlanrear2.jpg It looks as if the bottom would be sitting on the spare tire.?!
artinist
ya, that thing is a PITA, and its extra weight. i guess one would say its good for a racecar, then again, if you racing, then you dont need the back seats and that is the best place for the battery. importwarrior
that has the back seat and the spare tire in there, it was made to fit in with out removing much,
artinist
that box looks nice but if for some reason you needed to charge the battery or take it out, 8 bolts and nuts looks like it would be a pain in the a**. I am only going to put a couple of the bolts in for the top, i think 8 is overkill. its just a flat surface to sit on. the battery hold down bracket is the one really holding it down. as for charging or jumpstarting, it can be done from the junctionbox under the hood. this box should also go well with tech inspection at the track. they are very picky on the road coarses about safe battery mounts. Importwarrior, it looks like the bracket it sitting on top of the wood panel over the spare, it might have to be removed or loosened for the spare to come out. I am also going to keep the complete rear seats, its just going to have that box on the driver side rear seat. i have never needed that sitting spot. artinist
another nice option for the battery mount: http://www.jegs.com/photos/026acbm.jpg $90 from Jegs.com
heefner
I don't think thats a turnk mount. It must be mounted in an enclosed box incase it explodes, you don't want battery acid inside the car. Gonna need a lid and a full enclosure.
MikeMeyerhoff
You want to enclose and vent regular batteries cause they give off gas when charging. Â Optimas are gel-cells, meaning all there acid is trapped in goo. Â Its sealed and doesn't give off gas. Â Since they don't give off anything they last forever! Â One of the guys I shoot pool with has one that is over 12 years old and on its third car. I'll be going with a red-top eventually. mm
TainterRacing
you are right about no gas BUT if you arev you will find out that dont matter not yet any how the rules are all batterys must be inclosed if any where other then OEM. But you are right... as well
JustPaus_88TSi
I had two yellow top optima's powering a hefty system that metered constantly around 156dB. The battery's were mounted upside down for installation points. No problem what-so-ever. John
artinist
good point about the closed case. in case of an accident, if something bends or falls on the open contacts so they short out, sheeet will hit the fan.
TopDawg_43
Here's a pic of where my battery is located. http://www.tristarion.com/images/personalpics/thumbs/1053097612.jpg
artinist
I finally got around to relocating my battery from the trunk to the rear seat. here is the result. preparing the rear seat: by the way that seat is indestructable. almost had to go borrow a chain saw. http://home.earthlink.net/~artinist/images/battery1.JPG http://home.earthlink.net/~artinist/images/battery2.JPG here is the box mounted: the cable was routed from under the carpet rather than ouside the car. I used 4 of the bolts to tie down the box. http://home.earthlink.net/~artinist/images/battery3.JPG I put some insulation around the battery in case it moves: also installed a switch in case i need to cut the power real quick. I am also using 4 wing nuts for the top for quick access. http://home.earthlink.net/~artinist/images/battery4.JPG here is the final result, best location for the battery on a roadrace car IMO. now if only i can find a cover for that area behind it. i have 2 passenger sides and no driver side. ahhh. http://home.earthlink.net/~artinist/images/battery5.JPG
Lizzord30
Cool idea, altho i would think the pass side rear would be better Becuse the front drivers side is the heavyest without driver and with driver its even more. Guess its too late now Hope it improves your times from where it was. Here is how i did mine i sometimes usen the back seat so i didnt go that way, and think that spot is best for drag racing tho and i have major traction problems (on the street). http://63.251.78.219/image%20file/starquest%20mods/battrelocate.jpg
artinist
you are right. passenger side rear would be even better. but i wanted to save a seat in the rear and figured no one ever seats behind me. I may get slightly harder springs for the driver side when I order coilovers. I am going to talk with some porsche 944 race freaks and get some input from them. there are a few really fast cars around here and their setup is not too different than ours. Shawn_Silva
Lizzord, you really need to upgrade that battery box, I've had one of those with the cheesy plastic holddowns and they can easily break in high cornering, braking, or drag start launches. And heaven forbid if you were ever in an accident, that battery would be travelling at probably well over 50mph when it impales you... Just looking out for ya! Take care Shawn
artinist
I agree. on my previous car i bolted down the factory metal battery tray. the I put the plastic container on top and used the factory hold down system on the lower portion. then i used the strap to just keep the top from flying off. DanMitsu
What was the decsion on the, ground strap?? run it up front or make one off the existing frame?? using the stock locations??
artinist
no need to run it all the way up front, just connect to an unpainted surface on the main body anywhere.
