mbruneaux
It's not uncommon to have a few metal particles on the first oil change but I Don't know if that's too much.
importwarrior
might want to flush the oil cooler and lines again just to be safe.
tsi_tom
might want to flush the oil cooler and lines again just to be safe. I never put one on yet. I wanted to see how the engine ran first. If there was a problem then I wouldn't fill up the oil cooler with metal. tsi_tom
I got new tires for inspection. I purchased Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval AS in 50s. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Tires/carnewtires_zps7ec28582.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Tires/firehawkwideovalasrim_zps8b0a5284.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Tires/firehawkwideovalas_zps97a1e245.jpg I failed inspection for two things. One is the rear SHP struts are shot and the front air dam is hanging. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/General%20Car%20Stuff/brokenconquestairdam_zps32d0cb0c.jpg Air dam is an easy fix but the struts.... importwarrior
how do they test struts? was there oil leaking or showing or something?
tsi_tom
They saw one was a Tockico and the other was adjustable. Then somehow noticed the Tockico was "collapsed". Also they said the spring isn't resting in the SHP strut correctly. So they want both struts the same and the spring seated correctly. Reasonable findings. Someone before me messing with the struts,
dmyers151
I can't believe they'd go as far as to question your struts. I had my car inspected the week before Joe's meet and thought for sure I'd fail for unevenly worn tires, they're pretty bad. If I were you I might try another shop. Not saying you shouldn't fix the struts, but I think they're being a little ridiculous.

tsi_tom
For inpsection I needed to get matching struts. Previous owner had one Tockico and the other SHP. The SHP strut spring wasn't seated correctly so I fixed that and put another SHP strut in. I also fixed the broken front air dam. tsi_tom
The car has passed inspection! http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Inspection/inspectionstickers_zps14fd2a5b.jpg The engine is still making the funny rattle noise but I believe this to be the forged pistons. Time will tell. This rebuild process has been a long road. I seriously underestimated how much time and money bringing a car back from the dead costs. Future plans I have is a D2 suspension, new upholstery, and paint. Thank you Starquestclub for all for your help! I could not have done this without you! Also thank you rdyller for having a place for us to talk, buy, sell, and fabricate new parts for these Starquests.

techboy
This rebuild process has been a long road. I seriously underestimated how much time and money bringing a car back from the dead costs. This is my favorite sentence from your post. When I did my motor rebuild, I thought I could do it in a/b a year for a particular figure, and it took me 2 years and twice as much money! And ... to boot ... I still have some issues I need to work out. 8 years is a long time for a car to just sit .... Seriously though, congratulations Tom! I had a good time the little bit I was there, I look forward to hitting up some meets and shows with you.

I (just like you) underestimated how long things take to complete also. Congrats on finishing it up to the point where you can drive it and enjoy it. Thats a great place to be, just drive the sucker. tsi_tom
Update time. I have driven the car in short spurts to see how she is doing. Last Sunday I took a long drive with the car. Car did good but I have this coolant issue: http://www.starquestclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=144984 She has developed a power steering pump and a steering box leak that I will need to fix. The steering box is difficult to get out. I also don't like the feel of the stick shift. The engagement of a gear seems "sharp". I may try a different gear oil. I also don't like the feel of the brakes. They work, just not as touchy as I would like.
