tsi_tom
I got a new cap. This cap SANKEI is supposed to be the original manufacturer for our cars. It is made in Japan. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Radiator/SANKEIradiatorcap_zpsd762ff3a.jpg Newish Stant cap. Made in Mexico. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Radiator/Stant13lbscap_zps37af8f85.jpg I noticed that there was some paint in the throat of the radiator. This paint is from the when the radiator was rebuilt. I sanded down the paint with 1500 grit sand paper. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Radiator/radiatorthroat_zps42052d3e.jpg Installed. tsi_tom
I drained the raditator and filled it up with a 50/50 mix. Also I went to replace the antenna mast. I removed the old mast but there was no track. When I went to install the new mast it wouldn't catch the motor and would just skip. So I had to remove the power antenna http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Antenna/antennanut_zpsed12b1eb.jpg Power antenna removed http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Antenna/powerantenna_zps059508a2.jpg New mast http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Antenna/MB541310_zps9bee8738.jpg Removed the side of the antenna to get to the housing where the track goes when retracted. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Antenna/powerantennawithhousingringinstalled_zps9ceb4e40.jpg Old track still there! http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Antenna/oldtrackstillinthehousing_zps759864b6.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Antenna/brokentrack_zpsa5f9f8ee.jpg When installing the new track it kept getting stuck here until I pulled it in with a dental tool. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Antenna/stucktrack_zps3857d7c7.jpg What the other cover removed from the antenna looks like http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Antenna/backoffpowerantenna_zps256897c4.jpg Timing wheel of the antenna http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Antenna/limitwheelofpowerantenna_zpsacdffdbb.jpg Antenna section of the service manual http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Antenna/conquestaudiosystemchapter-antenna_zps1326ca72.jpg The antenna works fine now. I was a bit concerned about the skipping noise on extracting and retracting but apparently that is normal. importwarrior
did you have to cut the track to length or was it the proper length?
tsi_tom
It does skip twice on extending and once on retracting, but I didn't cut it. Edited November 10, 2014 by tsi_tom
tsi_tom
During the freezing winter when I was bored I decided to see how bad the original motor from the car was. It had very bad compression. Also the oil cooler had this in it when I blew it out with compressed air. So I thought this engine ate a bearing. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Oil%20Cooler/debrisinpan4_zps21aec25e.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Oil%20Cooler/debriscloseup_zps27c4ec0d.jpg The engine http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Original%20Engine/Tear%20Down/G54B_zpsoqrmffhz.jpg Took the oil pan off to see how bad it was http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Original%20Engine/Tear%20Down/oil%20pan%20guide%20material_zpsdvogqoyf.jpg Not too bad! http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Original%20Engine/Tear%20Down/oil%20pan_zpstyeme6gl.jpg No metal just timing guide material. tsi_tom
First oil change. I wanted to see if the knocking is the engine eating a bearing. Oil filter dump out http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Motor%20Issue/oilfilterdump_zps80022fd0.jpg Material on the oil filter http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Motor%20Issue/oilfilter3_zps691ddea2.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Motor%20Issue/oilfilter2_zps677f86f7.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Motor%20Issue/oilfilter1_zps9e3f954b.jpg Magnet- Material is magnetic http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Motor%20Issue/magneticmaterialinoilfilter_zps8484d061.jpg Maybe this knocking noise is just the forged pistons. I have been thinking about this material in the oil filter. This could be material from when the block was bored 20 over. There really is no way to prevent the bored cylinder material from falling into the oiling holes. I also didn't wash my block when I got it back from the machine shop. They told me they washed it. tsi_tom
I have been thinking about what do do with the two oil coolers I have. Both have metal in them and I don't think I can clean them enough to get all the metal out. Buying an after market oil cooler requires bracket modification and adapters. Also there is a cooling effect with the metal lines up to and from the oil cooler that you wouldn't get with an all rubber line. How much cooling effect? I don't know. So I purchased the stock replacement oil cooler. tsi_tom
I got a new oil cooler, but before I installed it I wanted to see if any metal was in the oil filter. The previous oil change showed some metal chips that I believe to be from the boring out of the cylinder and falling into the oil galley. In these pictures what is interesting is the material from the timing guides. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Oil%20changes/oil%20filter%20material%204_zps72y4tqtz.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Oil%20changes/oil%20filter%20material%203_zpspq67ozfz.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Oil%20changes/oil%20filter%20material%202_zpsnxqdkncp.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Oil%20changes/oil%20filter%20material%201_zpsgsvtrrfi.jpg Oil cooler installation http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Oil%20Cooler/new%20oil%20cooler_zps6csofnnk.jpg Bottom mounting bracket http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Oil%20Cooler/oil%20cooler%20bracket_zpsui26x6yr.jpg Installed http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Oil%20Cooler/oil%20cooler%20installed_zpsszmvsmff.jpg I rebuilt my oil cooler lines following Randy's write up. ZPI28
I just checked out this whole thread. Its looking great. Very nice attention to detail on the engine build. D-VO
Holy crap, a brand new oil cooler?! Nice one. If it's not too much trouble, could you weigh that sucker? This is probably one of the last times we'll ever see one that's truly "empty" of sludge and crap. Would like to know how close it's possible to get to the OEM "empty" weight. tsi_tom
I installed the D2 rear coil overs yesterday. I set mine at 3 inches. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Suspension/D2%203%20inches_zpsgyfn5uqj.jpg As I tightened them up I tapped on the tool with a dead blow hammer and chipped the collar. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Suspension/D2%20collar%20chip_zpsir4mzmug.jpg As others have reported the labeling of left side and rear side is not what is expected. Here you can see the coil over is labeled right side but is on the drivers side of the car. D2 must have the reference looking at the car from the front and not from the back. I would like to see these labeled as drivers side rear/front and passenger side rear/front. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Suspension/D2%20Rear%20right_zpsnkxqorhr.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Suspension/Conquest%20Driver%20side_zpstkz3eavm.jpg Edited June 7, 2015 by tsi_tom
BuGG
Use a punch to tighten it. A chisel is not recommended either and may chip it like that. Edited June 7, 2015 by BuGG

starquestJOE
Tom what you did works, but hitting the tool like that opens it up and when you go to readjust the tool will slip off.
