Funky Phil
The R154? Which trans is that? Is it from the SVO or something?? As much fun as a 6th gear sounds I didnt think a V8 box would work out too well. phil
Bill Hincher
the R 154 is the Toyota Supra trans from the turbo charged 7 me engine, its a 5 speed but its a heavy duty guy
BrazilBoy
My buddy years back put a mercedes 5 cylinder diesel in his 4runner to get the bellhousing done he went to Lakewood Bellhousing, it was awesome just bolted right up, according to my friend. Maybe they could help out? Just a thought. Heres the link. http://www.lakewood-industries.com/
Bill Hincher
I just keep working and working and working, its all good though I should have the gussets in place and have it molded out for final casting next week http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousingwork.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousingwork1.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousingwork2.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousingwork3.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousingwork6.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousingwork7.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousingwork8.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousingwork9.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousingwork10.jpg

mstieg
Not at all. This is great stuff here. To clear my freshly foggy head, Bill is working on a bell to make the 9" fly/clutch work with the T56, which is the alternative to Chad's adapter plate and the custom 11" Fidanza fly that works with the LT1 trans in particular? Chad's also allows for tons of clutch options while Bill's allows for other GM trannies other than just the LT1? or is Bill making the housing for the 4g6x motor? ~ I'm trying to make sense of this and several other archived threads. :rolleye0018: ...with both routes intended to beat out the oh-so-painful, slow, & expensive customization otherwise. ...I use the term "work with" loosely to mean bolt-on without custom making many other components, using available shelved parts like Bill says. Bill Hincher
the original plan was to use the LM-1 T56 on a narrow block 4G63, the only thing I have built for the wide block ( 4G64) is the GM auto trans adaptor I had no intention of making anything for the wide block, I was just going to make a couple of narrow block /Toyota conversions, but then I was asked to do the LM1 then that lead to the wide block and this time use the LT 1 T56 and then that got into a discussion about flywheels and combinations and internal throw out bearings all that stuff The bottom line is this, when I build a bellhousing, I use the clutch controls from the given donor trans or engine depending on what works, I use over the counter parts that are easy to obtain and not a lot of money. Then I ALWAYS use the OEM flywheel, I know a lot of discussion has gone into lightened flywheels and bigger clutches but I keep the engine in original form and the trans in original form and combine the two at the pressure plate and disc, that way I have the original design from both sides without taking anything out of balance . A new custom disc is a little over a $120.00 bucks , the throw out bearing, clutch fork , pivot ball and the slave cylinder will be all OEM Starion parts
Bill Hincher
Just to clarify, this is built to adopt the T 56 Lm1 six speed to the 4G63 narrow block I added new gussets in the interior of the bellhousing, they are lighter with better alignment then the original http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56build.jpg I moved all the bolt patterns out by 2% to allow for shrinkage in the casting process http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56builda.jpg I added tubing as guides to build ribs on the outside of the housing to build strength and allow some cooling http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56buildc.jpg at first I thought I would just use an internal throw out bearing but because of the cost I mounted the first gen Mits 4G63 narrow block controls so anyone could get cheaper parts http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56buildg.jpg I just keep trying to lighten this little guy up without sacrificing strength, it was quite a task on the lower trans mounting bolts http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56builde.jpg I will be using the AWD flywheel with a disc built by Dan @ competion clutch, the pressure plate will be the original Mits application http://www.billsautofab.com/images/AWDflywheel.jpg

Bill Hincher
I finished out this t 56 ( LM-1) 6speed trans for the narrow block 4G63, I will be building the wide block T 56 next, but I have a couple other guys waiting for the EVO R 154 set up http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing062.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing066.jpg This is built to accept eithr the FWD flywheel or the the AWD flywheel depending on the cut ordered http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing071.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing072.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing075.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing081.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing084.jpg

Bill Hincher
these housings are for the T 56 narrow block 4G63, they have to be proven and machined yet but they look right http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing085.jpg these are allheat treated to a T 6 hardness http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing086.jpg They will be using an AWD flywheel http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing087.jpg they weigh less then 18lbs >;o) http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing088.jpg they willuse the first gen clutch fork, pivot ball with a toyota throw out bearing http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing089.jpg these are T 56 on the left, R 154's in the center and W 55's on the right, they are all for the narrow block 4g63 http://www.billsautofab.com/images/4-18-2009.jpg I didnt want you guys to think I was relaxin'>;o)

Bill Hincher
the fit and finish is perfect, very little has to be done to the pattern, what does have to be adjusted only pertains to making it easier for machining process http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0102.jpg i am very pleased with the bolt spacing for the bolt patterns, not too big,not too small http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0100.jpg It is centered perfectly http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing090.jpg I saved about twenty pounds of aluminun with my lower transmission bolt pattern design http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing093.jpg My original thoughts were to use the internal throw out bearing option, but after much thought I decided to include the original first gen clutch fork arraingement to keep the cost down http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing098.jpg all the time spent on thinning down the internal sides of the bell housing walls paid off well , it created such an unusual shape because of how the drafting had to be planned out for the casting process , but it saved a lot of wieght and kept its strength http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0104.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0107.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0111.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0113.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0115.jpg I think what I will do is change where the pilot bearing rides in the crankshaft or flywheel to compensate for long or short shafts between the Lt-1 T 56 and the LM 1 T 56 transmissions
Bill Hincher
the T 56 is done and its just drop dead gougous >;o) reminds me of the time I was on the russian border on a midnight train ride when I was checked in at the Polish border by a drop dead gourgous russian customs officer >;o) ( true story) http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0067.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0068.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0069.jpg the input shaft depth spacing came in real nice http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0070.jpg this is the original 4G63 first gen clutch fork and pivot ball, the fitting is very nice, I am placing the slave cylinder on the passenger side again to avoid the exhaust heat http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0071.jpg I had to decide how to construct the throw out bearing, it was a toss up between the thicker collar or a custom throw out bearing holder, I went with the collar because it added strength http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0072.jpg I did this in aluminum but the real deal will be done in steel http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0073.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0074.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0075.jpg I re used the stock Toyota throw out bearing from the W 55 series trans cheap and common parts http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0076.jpg the pilot bearing was placed in the flywheel on this trans because its the short shaft ( 5 1/8 in) I will place the pilot bearing into the crankshaft on the longer shaft versions, that way I can use one bellhousing for both transmissions http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0077.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0078.jpg BADDUDE fixed me up on the disc, ( he is great to work with ) this set up uses the original AWD flywheel and starter, the cusom disc, and the original Mits clutch pressure plate http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0079.jpg http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0080.jpg I have to fit the slave cylider yet, I need to adjust the throw of the clutch fork just a bit but it will be fine http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0081.jpg this is the total assembled package with the clutch all installed http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0082.jpg the starter is the stock Mits unit in the exact same place as the FWD unit, the threads must be drilled out of the starter and the bolts must be started from the engine side back into the bellhousing http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0083.jpg there is plenty of room for any intake manifold unit to be installed http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0084.jpg I will be building two seperater plates, one at the engine /bellhousing location and one at the bellhousing/transmission location http://www.billsautofab.com/images/T56bellhousing0085.jpg
