I thought about turning the engine by hand but decided it was getting late anyways and called it. Charles Gardner hosts a meet at least once a year just south of Baltimore. It's usually small but high quality addicts are in attendance :)

first i have heard of it!

usually on a saturday? i work saturdays but always off on sundays

So I finally got the tranny dropped and pulled the tail section apart. It was a little tricky to get it apart since the shifter wouldn't move to free things up and allow me to pull the tail off.

So I drove out this pin and was able to wiggle it off.

Got the tail section off and it looked like this. Looks to be in first gear as expected.

Nothing looks odd to me so I pressed on the 1st/second rod and it clicked down into the neutral position

Drove the spring pin back in the neutral return finger and slid the tail section back on.

Shifts just fine now.

The only thing I found that showed any wear was the shifting finger itself. I'm not sure if it's meant to have a flat on the side of it like this or not.

So apparently nothing is broken!! Thank the SQ Gods! My theory is that when I forced it out of first that it somehow got the shift finger out of the groove for first and second and under the finger linkage?

Now I just need to grab a few gaskets to put it all back together. Just ordered the transmission gasket set from rockauto. Fel Pro part # TS803101 just for reference.

I nominate Kev's posts for an FAQ thread.

I'd like to do more than just that and make up the full tranny rebuild thread. I uploaded about 50 pics the other day when I posted these. What I thought was about 300 total photos is actually 632! It's pretty daunting to think about the time involved in making the thread. The site that I've used for years to store the pics only takes 2 photos at a time. Been hesitant to change sites because of consistency but I may have to. Anyone recommend a photoshare site that I can upload batches of photos at a time and be able to show linked pics on this site in a similar size?

What numbers are you looking for? That rear most bearing is commercially available. The input shaft bearing is somewhat easy to find depending on the year of the tranny. The countershaft bearings are commercially available. The problem child is the center bearing. It's made by naichi but from what I can find is that it was custom made for the 88 89 trannies. There are aftermarket substitutes for the older trannies.

Also there are many needle roller bearings that are custom. Se of which are nla from Mitsubishi. It's a long story, I have to get the thread created

photobucket has gone downhill so far i cant recommend them anymore. bigger problem than the uploading, bandwidth, photobucket only gives you so much total bandwidth a month for free, then all pics go white until you pay for more bandwidth or cross the next month

imageshack sucks, always have issues seeing pics from there.

not sure where else, i am actually looking for a image host now

if you can get the numbers off the bearings, and measurements (widthxheightxshaft bore) what type of seals if any, and what load style, i have about 30 bearing books at my work, im sure i can find a replacement

Sorry for so many replies. Let me know if this kit works. I bought an aftermarket kit and it had the wrong gasket that goes between the extension housing and that shifter plate. I sent it back and ordered the gaskets from Mitsubishi. Only were a few bucks

Yep I have all of that info. Let me find my notes and get back to you.

Yes, I'd be a little concerned that it will lock up again. Here is a better pic of mine after being cleaned up:

Unfortunately this shaft assembly is the only thing that I didn't fully disassemble when I rebuilt my transmission. The reason why is this 'lock pin' that connects the shaft to the cast lever (called the 'change shifter' per the FSM).

See the two pins that must be removed to pull out the shaft. The rear most one is the 'lock pin'. The other one is just another spring pin. On Page 21-27 of the 88/89 FSM, it says to use a lock pin installer. I have never seen this type of pin and was nervous on removing it. So I simply cleaned it all up, inspected, and relubricated.

If you don't want to venture down this lock pin path, you can swap extension housings with the donor tranny?

I forgot to dig up my notes on the bearings. I need to find them which is a little difficult because I moved since then. I believe they are in a folder in my garage.

Thanks for all the information Kev! I was thinking I could just drive that pin out like any other, but maybe not.

I'll being going to pick up another transmission this weekend. If the tail section looks better in that one then I'll just swap them out. I may even pull the tranny from my Valencia to check things out.

He got out of the bearing buisness years ago and got into the tornado chasing buisness. He's not around much anymore. Your best bet is to take the old bearing to a bearing shop.

Yikes, I knew he married but not anything more. Is tornado chasing a business if you're not on TV?

That's just his hobby. He's working for some conveyor manufacturer now, usually playing with grain silos. He did get out if the SQ game, his car trading hands a number if times now. I know cokedoctor just sold it to another member not long ago.

Any updates on this? How did that gasket set look?

This issue motivated me to move forward in creating a rebuild thread. In the past week I got the photos uploaded...all 632 of them, and I just started the write-up.

Oh no. Working on my write up I found that I'm missing several pics of the disassembly! I switched jobs between now and then and I hope they weren't on my old hard drive! Going to have to search my jump drives at home. This may be a show stopper for my thread. These are key photos of the process.

I do have the bearing photos. Still haven't found my sheet with the shaft sizes, etc tho
