tsi_tom
Went to put the radiator in this weekend. I tested the fans. I have a dead primary fan. Yet another reason why the car died. I'm picking up a used radiator with fans on Tuesday. We'll see how good that one is. Man, the price for a new primary fan is ridiculous. techboy
I might have a good primary fan laying around if the used one you pick up is bad. Just let me know if I can help you out.
FijiPhil
Just a heads up, the fan motors for the primary and the secondary fans are interchangeable if you can find a secondary fan.

Thanks! Just a heads up, the fan motors for the primary and the secondary fans are interchangeable if you can find a secondary fan. Interesting, then why do they have different part numbers? Dred_85.5_TSI
I have some spare fans. They were sold to me as running, but, I've never tested them. I can rig up a test harness and see if they are any good if you wind up needing them.
FijiPhil
Not sure about why they have different part numbers.. But I know it worked great for me when I swapped one in!
tsi_tom
The used radiator with the primary fan is bad. Probably the reason that car died also. The seconday fan works great. Looks like the fans can be rebuilt. See the link: http://www.starquest...howtopic=117592

importwarrior
It runs great. as far as cool it seems to run same as stock. I also have 2 primary rad fan sensors. I also run a 180 T-Stat. i am going to probably go back to a stock t-stat soon.when it kicks on you can see the gauge on the dash drop at a noticeable rate. tsi_tom
Got the gasket on the right from my friends at GNT peformance products. Thanks GNT! http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Transmission/GNTcontrollevergasketandMitsubishigasket_zpsb33846a4.jpg Modified it for the control lever gasket. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Transmission/ControlLeverGasket_zps7e909a87.jpg Checked how level the car was before I filled up the transmission. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Transmission/levelcar_zps87575eca.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Transmission/levelposition_zpsb127f48d.jpg I was putting the Sta-lube GL4 oil in when I noticed that I got 140 SAE weight. tsi_tom
Transmission oil is in. What a mess. A word of caution with the Sta-Lube oil pumps and our transmissions. The manual transmission requires 2.4 quarts. The nozzle on the Sta-Lube pump fits in the fill hole very snug. As I was filling up the trans I wondered why the trans was able to take more than 2.4 quarts as oil was not seeping out of the fill hole. After I put in three quarts I pulled out the nozzle and 90 weight spewed all over the floor. What a mess!

techboy
I can't remember if it was this car, or my truck when I did that transmission .... but I kinda think I filled my trans inside the car with the shifter assembly removed. That way I could just have a pan under the trans and the fill hole open. When it starts seeping out the fill hole, it's full. Might have been my truck ... but I'm thinking it was the Quest. Nice little trick.
tsi_tom
Only issue with that is a little drip on the carpet and it will stink forever. I hate the smell of 90 weight. Why does it have to stink like that?
tsi_tom
Filled the car up with five gallons of gas and flushed the supply and return lines with the fuel pump test jack. Started to install the new engine bay fuel filter and that is when I noticed I didn't order the copper gaskets for the rubber supply lines. I also put the air cleaner assembly in to see what I have to order. Cleaned the oil separator with kerosene too. My big problem is what do with the oil cooler. I have two and one has copper shavings in it and the other has a lot of silver metal shavings/flakes. I may do what SFBMX88 did with his car.http://www.starquestclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=128455 So even if I am ready to start the car I need to get the oil cooler problem resolved. tsi_tom
There is some knocking going on in the engine. I am trying to isolate it. I have a VM topic about it: http://http://www.st...howtopic=143103 Summary from VM topic Video link of the motor starting: http://s1069.photobu...0edb19.mp4.htmlVideo of the knocking noise: http://s1069.photobu...f7c1ea.mp4.html The noise gets louder when under a load. The noise seems to be in the timing cover.VM responses suggested it might be the lifters. So I took the rocker assembly off to inspect. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Motor%20Issue/rockerassembly_zps4b500c4c.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Motor%20Issue/cylinderhead_zpsf0f5b5ee.jpg I noticed one lifter was a little banged up but very tight. I don't think this is the issue, but I replaced it anyway with a new one. Banged up lifter http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Motor%20Issue/lifterwithissues_zpsbde19dfa.jpg I setup to clean and bleed the lifters. The machine shop had moved cam and rockers over to the new head from enginemachineservice.com. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Motor%20Issue/readyforliftercleaning_zpsad51f890.jpg Three pans. A B and C like the TSB calls for filled with diesel fuel. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Motor%20Issue/setupforliftercleaning_zpse7d97fca.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Motor%20Issue/setupforliftercleaning2_zpsd930b050.jpg I cleaned and bled the lifters. They were very clean. So this isn't the cause of the knocking noise. I didn't have the special hydraulic lash adjuster holding tool so I used a paper clip to hold them for installation. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Motor%20Issue/papercliplifterholdingtool_zps44729d17.jpg The paper clip worked great! I started the car. Now I have a lifter tick! I got a Snap On stethoscope and started to probe around to see where the knocking noise is coming from. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Motor%20Issue/snaponstethoscope_zpsba04c138.jpg The noise is coming from the front of the engine around the number one cylinder. tsi_tom
First oil change. I wanted to see if the knocking is the engine eating a bearing. Oil filter dump out http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Motor%20Issue/oilfilterdump_zps80022fd0.jpg Material on the oil filter http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Motor%20Issue/oilfilter3_zps691ddea2.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Motor%20Issue/oilfilter2_zps677f86f7.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Motor%20Issue/oilfilter1_zps9e3f954b.jpg Magnet- Material is magnetic http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Motor%20Issue/magneticmaterialinoilfilter_zps8484d061.jpg Maybe this knocking noise is just the forged pistons.
