So while I was banned...

Recommended Posts

So since I've been banned for the past three years, my projects have progressed in some interesting ways.

In 2010 I purchased a nice 1988 starion with stiff suspension, 120K on the clock and very little oil pressure. But the reason why I bought the car was because I already had a nicely built up short block sitting on the stand with no home.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c255/sidewaysstarion/IMG_1383.jpg

Bottom end Build

-Stock size crank micro polished and balanced

-Stock rods reconditioned with arp rod bolts and bushed for floating wrist pins

-Wiesco 8.1:1 compression pistons

-Block deck, bored and O-ringed

-New oil pump, timing chain, and BSE kit.

-Stock flywheel with a Spec Stage 3+

so I swapped the short block into the car and while I was doing that I notice the engine harness was very dry and brittle so I decided this this 88 would be a great candidate for an MPI swap. So I looked on *DM and Kelly had an ITB setup for sale, so I decided why not do an ITB turbo setup.

A few weeks later Chris Viper and I were wondering through the local pick a part and he noticed a mitsu mighty max distributor laying there and so we took it over and compared it to a G54B distributor and we noticed they were close enough and we could run the mighty max distributor is we just made a small little spacer and it used the same trigger disk as a DSM, so we knew we could swap the disk for a 24-1 disk and have full sequential spark and fueling.

So Chris said we should run an AEM 30-6050 box because it has a ton of ins and outs and it's pretty much AEM's unoffical low cost universal ECU, but first we had to see if it would work with the Mighty Max distributor. So we called up AEM and ordered up a SR20DET trigger disk, $30 later we had a prefect cam/crank signal.

So Chris and I built a full engine harness from scratch and a few days later we had the beast running on the AEM.

The car had a small 16g, but I didn't want to push it so we baselined the car at exactly 200 rwhp at 10/11psi on a dynapack dyno.

Currently the car is waiting on an SMB header so I can mount my Comp Turbo CT4-6265

I'll update this thread as I make more progress, and I hope to be making some power by OCT.

ITB MPI?

ITB TBI!!!

Posted Today, 10:31 PM

I think you need to be banned some more and see what else you come up with!! :D

Nice! More pics on the ITB's!

The intake manifold is an astron dcoe intake manifold like the one below, with a plate welded on the bottom and the lower holes re drilled to work with the G54b head.

The throttle bodies are TWM/Borla DCOE replacement throttle bodies with a custom plenum built so the motor can eat boost.

Everything looks great so far man. Best of luck with the build. My only comment would be you may be dissatisfied with the Comp turbo--I know a lot of people who have gotten those and are kicking themselves now as they spool slower and make less power than equivalent turbos from garrett, etc.

New site, new rules? Or someone asked very nice. Anyway, that's pretty cool. The plenum seems a bit small, but if it works, that's cool. If you went MPI, why not have a more standard on-end throttle body location?

The reason why I decided to go down the ITB road is the motor is going to get a built up head with a monster cam, and with a standard intake with a single throttle body the runners are different lengths which is what gives the car that lopey idle. I want the car to have a nice smooth idle even with a cam pushing 300*s of duration.

  • 4 weeks later...
  • 3 years later...

Well, I guess it's time to update this thread, a lot has happened in the past 4 years.

Picking up where I left off, I received my SMB header 5 days before Scotty's meet in NV, we burned the midnight oil and finally strapped it on the dyno at 1am the night before and finished tuning at 3am, we couldn't really do any impressive power pulls because the crappy stock head I had wouldn't keep the valves closed above 24 psi. 10am the next morning we set off for vegas and I could hear the exhaust leak getting worse. By the time we hit barstow (150 miles later) what was causing the leak became rather apparent by the wastegate completely falling off of the header. I went to Scotty's meet and had a great time, I also met with SMB and he agreed it should come to his house so he could attempt to fix the header.

Chris attempted to fix the header and on the way back home I could hear it starting to leak again, so I parked it and started working on it. I found the #3 exhaust valve guide was starting to drop out and the header we again cracked. so I mothballed the car till I could find the time/money to fix it. A few months later a bad dealing with CJ caused me to really not care about SQs anymore and start playing in the jeep world also subsequently DC Performance shut down and I was forced to put my car in storage. The car sat for probably a year before I decided to start tinkering with it again. I pulled the cracked exhaust off and contacted a vendor on the jeep forums who makes turbo headers to build me one.

The header was built by Boostwerks before JDL showed up on the scene. http://www.boostwerksengineering.com/

So since the stock head I had was toasted I figured I might as well build up another head with a bit of a cam in it. Here's what I found when I tore it down....

I installed some beehive springs to go with the new cam.

Of course you have to have the porsche 911 adjusters to go with it.

So finally last weekend I fired it up after almost 3 years of sitting. I still have some things to work out, but it runs.
