Mike7447
how am I supposed to get this thing in there with the metal “ missing a screw bracket thingy” behind there. the steel thing in the background with the screw hole won’t allow the switch to fit in the dash. It hits well before even coming close. Can someone please explain why this is happening? What am I missing here?
techboy
There's a plastic surround housing that that switch sits inside of. It looks like that is missing in your photo. I'm assuming thats the cancellation switch that's just to the right of the hood release? It's a little hard to tell where your at on the dash in that photo. Mike7447
It’s mounted in the surround hosing. It still hits that metal piece before I can even snap the thing in that hole.
psu_Crash
Just went out to look at the car and that switch isn't currently in the gold car. I can tell you I have the same metal tab with a threaded hole and nothing in it. I have to ask, are you sure you are putting the right switch back in? Mike7447
It’s the one that’s been dangling since I removed the dash

I can't get into the other car as it's all masked for paint. Or I'd take a look.
BuGG
Where is the knee guard? How about you install that before putting in the switch.

Mike7447
It kinda blows my mind that there is so much redundancy built into the interior. W/o that “ knee guard” the dash looked complete to me. Adding that thing increased the depth required to get that switch installed properly. However, considering that cover is made out of steel, and isn’t padded, I’m not convinced it’ll serve any purpose in insuring my knees don’t get hurt in a wreck. Bottom line here is : problem solved. psu_Crash
I agree that it is more likely to hurt than help. Glad you figured it out ... now I'm thinking $#%^ where is that part for my gold car
kev
I don't believe the knee guard served any purpose but make the interior look fancier. The 83 through 85s did not have it....as well as some 86s (my old 86 esir did but I've seen others that didn't.....might have been only on the widebodies?) I'm trying to remember what went in that specific spot on the early model cars. I know the hood pull lever was very different and there was a different fuse box cover of course. Google searching photos (struggling to find any 84 or 85s): 83 RHD: nothing 83: doesn't look like anything is there 86: auto wiper cancel switch Another 86 (this is obviously a widebody...but as I said, I had an 86 esir that did have the kick panel...perhaps added it later in the year??)
