Give me a clue... 88 TSI, rebuildable or parts...

Hey all,

Was part of the StarQuest scene in the early days (see my web site http://pw1.netcom.co...ucker/tech.html), and long since moved on. My Quest has set 18 years in my exs garage, and she needs to get it gone.

Parting is not easily done as I live in a different town, so my hope is to have it towed away.

My dilemma is not having a clue where the value stands. (I want a million, but hey... might have to settle for a six pack or two...)

Read my description, review my site and tell me what I stand a chance of getting please (offers accepted).

Bremerton WA (98310)

A list to the best of my memory...

1988 Conquest TSI, Electric Blue. Under 100k miles (I think in the high 80's...)

Straight chassis (no dents, zero rust (still garaged even today).

Wide rims, plus spare set of narrow rims (my winter set)

Custom straight 2.5" exhaust to a Flowmaster. (Plus full factory exhaust for fast remount)

HKS cam

Flow benched heads (MCA still installed)

Deburred and cleaned exhaust manifold and turbo.

MSD6A ignition and MSD coil.

Battery relocated to passenger side of trunk

Custom made adjustable front sway bar (a never installed gift from a pro race driver Chris Bowl as he upgraded out of it).

Eibachs

Poly bushings

5-point harness mounts

New in the box Porterfield Kevlar brake pads

Still in the box cleaned injectors (from RC Engineering)

K&N

Modified airbox

Manual boost controller in center console

Proper boost gauge in cluster.

2 new Aero Wheel covers, with hubs for front or back.

The car was parked running, with metal-flake in the oil... I started a tear-down but left, so some engine parts (tubing, heatshields n such) are in a box. 18 years will certainly not be kind to any motor or brake system.

So where do I stand in the StarQuest world today?

Car is junk and have it towed? Or does the car has some value (Any idea what to ask for the whole thing?)

Thanks for input...

Vince

Is that Washington state, if parting interested in the hks cam and sway bars?

Thanks, but as I said, parting it is not my first preferance. I can't bring it to my current home, and an hour round trip with tools just to make my exs home a mess isnt in the cards either.... And yes, Washington state,....

$2500 seems pretty steap to me... even with all the extra goodies.... Is the need for this platform still in that high a demand, or is the chassis and parts list that makes you put that number so high?

It is a tough conversation for me, as I had years of love and pride in the car, but the reality is I moved on through many cars (Subie, Stratus, Audi, Lexus, and currently Jaguar) and I no longer have a desire to resurect her... (Took about 15 years for me to finally let go of the dream...)

I would love max money, but getting the car gone is my goal, so I am looking for what is a fare price that will make another owner happy without just giving the car away...

More input please... I'll decide the price and offer it here first, then off to craigslist it will go....

Keep it shiny side up,

VinceT

LoL! I remember you got an NSX, and we didn't see much from you after that! Good to see you are still around and doing well. I'd say it is worth $1500 as is with all of the parts you listed. More if you knew exactly what was wrong with it, but not less even if it needs a new / turned crank and or rods. I paid $1200 for an '86 with a hole in the block. I put $1500 in it and have driven now for 6 years, but only 10K miles. I drive my daily drivers more, and save my '86 and '87 wide bodies for longer highway trips.

Nope not me... I put the StarQuest on blocks back in 1996, and used my Galant VR-4 for my daily driver.

Had a Subie XT around the same time, so maybe that is what you recall...

Thanks all, I'll try for modern pics in a week or two, as I will be going to her home and pulling it out of the garage. Bet she still looks nice after a quick wash...

My current love is my Jag... She is a car that can spoil ya!

Peace!

I remember u Vince! Welcome back! Wow. I remember that web page too.

Thanks Kev.....

Those were some good times and memories for me (probably why I never parted with the StarQuest for this long). She was my "first love" as cars go, and I still thought I stood a chance of rebuilding her strictly for track events... but allas....

Considering how long you have owned this car, and kept it out of the weather, the year, color, mileage, and extra parts, i could see $1500.00 as a fast sale. If some one spends another $1500.00 to fix it you are hard pressed to find one like that running for $3000.00.

Thanks again all.

Just called the Ex, and told her I would be over Saturday to pull the car out of the garage and get a good look at her in the sunlight/rain. I need to be careful pulling her out and giving her a bath, just to keep from having second thoughts... Also gotta find the title that I have not seen in 18 years as well.... Probalby in the safe (I hope)

My ex reminds me the car has actually been garaged since '92 when I bought her.

For those that dont remember me, I was a trained Aircraft mechanic at the time, so any work done on her was pretty precise. I supported the StarQuest community with a lot of technical advice as well as working on several in my own garage just to be helpful.

I'm a legend in my own mind for two Starquest related items. I was the first to get the term "StarQuest" published in a magazine (Turbo and High Tech Performance, cerca 1995) where I got thanked and told they liked the name and would use it in future publications! Second is my research and documentation of production year designs and chages... (Had a microfich with lots of the parts data) I still wow myself going back and reading it today... I think I was also exclusive with the black and white Chrysler publicity photos I got back then.

I do miss the days... sigh....

I have a few PMs to answer from interested parties, and I'll go do that now. Not set on a price till I see her out and clean, but $1500 or more would certainly make me happier than two six-packs!

Thanks to everyone for the advice....

Keep it shiny side up!

Well, bit of an interesting day seeing the SQ again...

Not the pristine car I recall of 18 years ago (many more dings and scratches), but she is still a darn pretty car.

Pulled her out and gave her a quick bath. Tried to take inventory and came up missing parts... (Injectors, Porterfield pads, Sway bar attachment hardware, and oddly...... the old cam....)

I'll go through stuff at my current house to see if any followed me here, but I didn't think so....

Just a few pic so far. Will have more tomorrow...

Thanks,

But lets start with a reality check....

As I said, time and storage have not been good to her. I saw several new paint chips, and scratches on the roof thanks to storing empty boxes all over it... 95% will buff out, but I was sad to see them in the first place.

The number of pock-dents shocked me as well. The hood has one, as did the roof (from the inside? WFT?). If I were keeping her, I think a paintless dent repair could sort it all out easily.

If you notice in the first shot of her storage, I had a craftsman fender protector on the nose, held on by large magnets.... Anywhere the magnets were over the 18 years has ruined the paint underneath. (lifted and bubbled?) so the upper nose panel has no option but a re-spray to look right again. <Who-da thunk it... sigh.....>

The air dam is typical of a car driven hard at a autocross events for at least 3 seasons. All just paint chips and underside scratches.

The wide rims all show light curbing and one with a noticeable wow. That one also has the clear coat de-laminating near the outer edge (looks like white foggy droplets). Sad to see "new" Yokohama 008's mounted, that we know are nothing bu aged bricks at this point... (Could be fun just lighting them up in a parking lot, but I would not trust any 18 year old tire on the street...)

The engine bay looks good, but shows I started the tear-down and left.... It will take another SQ owner to look at the parts in a box and know where they all remount.... I would be hard pressed to remember myself without help. Oh, and I forgot it has a strut bar...

I'm mad about the missing parts, because I truly believe they were with the car (I would have had no reason to bring them to my current home). Camshafts do not easily vanish, nor do parts new in the box.... I'll tear my current garage apart today just to be sure...

I will get more detailed shots today, as yesterday was more about me reuniting with my car and searching for those missing parts...

Can anyone tell me how to post images in a thumbnail format on this forum? I can upload them to my flickr, but hate to stack them full sized and deep in a forum post....

Ah well, check back later...

Note: Missing parts located (all but camshaft) plus other small go-fast goodies I had forgotten about...

Here are some more shots. (check back as I took a few hundred and will post more.)

https://www.flickr.c...57650476650681/

At some time a mouse got inside. Made a nest in the glovebox.....grrrrrr

Spent today cleaning the inside and she looks OK. Seats are horribly dry and need revitalization. Typical pucker and wear holes in driver and passenger seats.

I have a few items that I may sell separate from the car (kinda depends on feedback here, but I really can use any extra cash getting rid of the car can provide.)

1.) Milled aluminum control arm bushings - New

2.) Starion Aero Covers - New. (Only 2 covers, but all 4 mounting center hubs)

3.) Custom made adjustable front swaybar (Used)

4.) Porterfield brake pads - new

As these items have never been on the car, and I may get a higher return selling them on fleabay. Thoughts?

Question... I found my parts microfich for the car.... has that ever been digitized and put online yet?

Thanks again for the input.

I think I'm looking for $1500 OBO for the car, and all parts that have been removed from it during disassembly..(Includes injectors, 5-point harness, master cylinder rebuild kit, spare narrow rims, spare exhaust, spare trunk carpet, and microfich.)... oh, and I was asked about the HKS cam, and it is mounted in the engine... -V

I'll see how it goes from there before considering lower offers. The car is not "pristine" but nice for her age....

Elbow grease on the paint will clear much of what ails it. Paintless dent repair will be on the new owner. With the pock marks in the hood (3 in the passenger side ridgeline), I would not hesitate. Interior smells kinda like mouse, so a good carpet shampoo would not hurt (I did clean it pretty well, but hey, I'm getting rid of the car, not restoring it for sale).

I have collected ALL parts, nuts, and bolts that I could find, and put them in a box.... I cannot promise it is all there, but I believe so consiodering where I had them stored... Buyer may even get parts from other cars past, as I could not distinguish the difference. If it looked like a car part or bolt, I tossed it in the box.

Parts not included will be the custom sway bar, aluminum bushings, and aero covers, which will most likely find their way to fleabay for those of you interested. If you were counting on them as part of the car sale, I apologize, and may accept lower offers on the car as the days drag on.)

I hope to have the car gone soon, so speak up. If highest offer is $500 after a week or so (it isn't), then it is off to Craigslist... I would rather see the forum folks get first shot, but the first $1500 in my hand is my initial goal... If that price proves too steep, then i will lower my aspirations just to get it out of her driveway in a week or so.

Also more pics on the flickr page.
