right, so for the 1uzzzzzzzzzie

the plan is to just do a freshen up on the engine...its tempting to go all out crazy with it...but if i do, ill never get this car done. plus the engine is out of a 97 ls400, which means it has thinner rods and its interference...and also, it appears it may not have been maintained all that well i.e oil not changed regularly.

the ideal choice is low mileage well maintained 90-94 ls400 1uz...because its beefier....thicker rods and non-interference.....but to find one will take a lot of time.....so in the mean time the i have now will have to do..

even though it wasn't maintained well, everything seems to be ok....i cleaned the valves and did some light lapping with fine paste, even though it didnt really need it....

before...

after cleanup and lapping

the radius left by the lapping seems to be very even and straight..

the exhaust valves were a pain to lap...tool didnt want to suction to it...

also noticed the valve springs seem fairly soft? i could push them in by hand without using the valve compressor tool. maybe toyota did this for longevity? i remember reading somewhere toyota said that these valves would never float at any RPM.

more on the COP setup..

so i decided to have a closer look at the coil, because it didnt seem right that it didnt go all the way down, and that it would need a spacer ....because it shouldnt..

i removed the rubber seal ring on the coil and found these two little tabs.,...which were stopping the coil from going all the way down..

so i ground off the tabs, then removed the rubber boot that goes over the spark plug to see if i could feel the spring on the coil engaging the spark plug tip....and it did. when you put the coil in, you could feel it had a springyness to it, and then when you pushed it down, you could feel the spring being compressed.

so the end result...it fits darn near perfect, just needed a small washer at the bottom. even the rubber ring on the coil fits nicely on the valve cover spark plug tube seal...

also, the coil is a 4 pin, so it has a built in igniter, which will be good for the megasquirt setup. cost 20 from ebay...cheap....., whether it holds up in the long run?....but physical fitment is spot on!

Yes, that was me. Here is his garage number . . .Park Garage Tel: 0151 647 6430. Afternoons is best, he may be reluctant to carry out any more bodywork as he did my arches a while back and wasn't easy but you could call him even just for advice. Good luck, Simon

more pics...

media blasted the diff...took forever in my small blast cabinet. metal was so rusted and pitted....

http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/tt280/seaviewsuites/53bb869d-edad-4b49-a3e1-be2f04ee889d.jpg

the diff soaked up the paint like a sponge!

all 32 valves of the 1uz..

valves lapped, wire brushed, stems and keeper grooves cleaned with very fine steel wool.........springs, keepers and retainers cleaned up..

bottom of the camshaft lobes were very funky...lots of varnish....valve lash was probably a littlesloppy...better than being tight anyways..

i taped up the journals, then polished the lobes with some very fine steel wool. this will make adjusting the valves easier as i will get a more accurate and better feel when using a feeler gauge...

dirty lobe on the end is what they all looked like before polishing...

friend has an ultrasonic tank..

so he cleaned the heads, upper and lower intake manifold, front timing cover and valve cover for me....came out pretty good....

great thing about ultrasonics is that it cleans in places you cannot get to normally...like the breather baffles for the PCV inside the valve covers....he said a ton of black junk came out!
