Since last update:

Picked up a few trim pieces and front speakers from the pull apart as well as continued sanding on the car. Fixed door dings and it is ready from primer except for the door jams and the roof needs a little attention

-- shooting for primer next weekend

Well French, it looks like you are definately bringing my old baby back to life. Good luck with the rebuild project. I'm glad it went to a good home. I would like to visit once you are complete. You have my home email so let me know. Edited by awdaniel

dang man good work. But, its your car really that dented? I'm worried that you mihgt need to use a stiffer block while you sanding. You shouldn't see so many "bare metal break though the paint" spots. Take you time when your sanding the primer. Good paint is 90% prep work.

I guess he was basing the work he's done off of class experience. Which in a way is perfectly fine. He can pretty much guarantee that he'll have very little extraneous material on the car.

Frenchi; My suggestion though, and this will take a while, but the car will be straight.

Get a good high build epoxy primer, and spray the car down.

Sand the car down just like you did with your straightline sander and random orbital, but use a smaller grade paper, like a 180 grit.

As soon as you break through the primer to some metal, STOP, and move away from the metal surface. because it's becoming your high spot. Proceed around the rest of the car until you sanded everything and have only a few faint areas of metal showing.

If you can tell low spots by looking, you'll need to do this a few more times. Re-prime the car with the epoxy, and repeat.

Your last coat of primer can be sanded by hand with 320, and then 400 wet. The water will help confirm that the car is flat. You can hose a panel and wait for the water to sheet off, after it does, you can see the trueness of the panel.

Afterwards a non-sanding sealer primer on the car will make the car one complete color to accept the paint. (The Fiji, bright blue metallic, will show bright and dark spots very easily, they're also tricky to spray.)

It wasnt really that dented dad and I just got a little carried away on sanding

I took my time sanding it with a hand sanding block all last weekend when I did the body filler and It feels very ripple free. I also sprayed the sandable primer on pretty thick (multiple light to medium coats). Im going to block sand the car very carefully with 320 and 400 that I already have and if I do happen to burn through the primer Ill just respray some primer. Yes I have primer sealer as well that goes on before the base so uniformity of color shouldn't be an issue.

The pictures tend to make it look much worse than it actually is, just like they did after I painted the engine bay (color looks extremely un-uniform but in real life it looks just fine. I believe some of that might be attributed to the way the lighting in the garage is and wierd things the flash on the camera did).

First update in a while

but I got quite a bit done this weekend (with big hopes for next weekend)

the doors:

Taped off the shell and primered it:

Then last weekend I prepped the doors and door jams and painted them:

had a four day weekend this weekend and used every hour of it on my car (unfortunately missing out on a track day with my friends in the process)

heres what i got done:

Hung the doors on freshly painted hinges (notice the bolts haha) theyre a little dusty in the first picture

http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/3934/sdc10979.jpg

http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/7832/sdc10980q.jpg

Then installed fenders and a hood (after removing the burgandy paint from them)to get them straight enough to primer

before you ask, yes the hood was that dented :/ also there was no red paint under the burgandy on the hood

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/3748/sdc10982p.jpg

painted the back sides of the skirts for rust prevention as well as the insides of the front fenders

http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/8013/sdc10983.jpg

then set up the paint booth and primered/ painted the hard to reach areas (in window area on doors so you cant see red when you look down in the door, back / tops / bottoms of fenders, beneath door handle, etc)

http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/2400/sdc10984.jpg

http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/2541/sdc10985c.jpg

http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/7780/sdc10986l.jpg

http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/1054/sdc10988.jpg

http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/1990/sdc10989g.jpg

http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/9157/sdc10990.jpg

Next is to re-install the doors, hood and fenders and block sand the whole car

Once everything is straight and true, I'll spray the outside of the car as a whole to ensure uniformity

Thanks for reading, comments appreciated

Is the engine apint kind of "Tiger-Stripey" or is it just the light?

Great work on the car. Thank God you saved it from that awful color.

Turborusty

mostly just the light, however it isnt as even as I'd like between the cowl and the hood so I'm going to repaint it when I spray the outside of the car
