So about 10 years ago my dad and I decided we needed a truck to pull our skid steer/trailer with....we found this old blue flat bed turd. 1979 Chevy C30 Custom Deluxe.

http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt93/BC_99/Other%20vehicles/20130509_193138_zps30f6291c.jpg

Years later we found the dump truck which works way better for the job, but the old chevy had new tires just installed and has always been handy for going to Lowes to get building materials or whatever. So, we decided to keep it. It only costs a couple hundred bucks a year to keep it insured and licensed, so it is a cheap convenience. When we bought it, it had new paint and a freshly rebuilt engine. The only things I have done to it in 10 years is replace the tires and front rubber brake lines and the grill and headlight bezels and the front bumper, and add the stainless wheel covers.

Fast forward to the present..

So, the years sitting in the sun hadn't been kind to the super cheap paint job and the roof and hood started peeling. I got some cheap paint and primer and figured I could just sand it down and shoot it over Easter weekend, since I was going to have a 4 day weekend. Well I got home that Weds. night and began stripping it down and started sanding on the roof. It should have been easy...the paint was already peeling....and I was using 40 grit sand paper on my air sander....NOPE. 4 hours later I had the roof sanded. and it was dark out. I started estimating the time it would take to finish and the $ I would spend on sand paper and or paint stripper and decided the next morning to call one of the local mobile blasting services to get a quote.

I did just that and the quote was reasonable, compared to 3 days of sanding on this dang truck and spending a large chunk of money on sandpaper and stripper. So, they came right out that after noon and I thought...."Great, I will spend a little money here, but I will be painting tomorrow!

Wrong again!

When I came out to see their finished work, I realized that the guy who had done the bodywork and painting before, should probably be selling his bondo sculptures to museums, because he is a true artist. I couldn't believe the sins that he had hidden under this old paint job. The guys who blasted it, were in disbelief also, as they both thought it just looked like a solid old truck that needed a strip down and paint. To say it had some dents and dings is an understatement. It was dented from the windows down on both doors and had patches welded to the outside of the doors for the towing mirrors to bolt up too, and rust holes in the bottoms of both doors. The fenders were in very similar shape, dented from end to end and top to bottom with rust holes in the lower areas.

So here are what the doors and fenders looked like after they were done. now understand that they have sat outside since Easter so they have started to scale over with rust.

http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt93/BC_99/Other%20vehicles/20150515_115157_zpsdlv6zgnx.jpg

So, I was dejected. Now what??? Replacement panels were in the $600-$700 range for all of them, and I just didn't want to spend that $ on this truck. I was going to spend weeks doing bodywork to patch it back together and probably be embarrassed by the outcome, as I can do metal work, but I am not much of a body man. Then it hit me...Screw the paint job. This old truck isn't worth a decent paint job anyway....it is a work truck and should look like one. So, I set to rough bodyworking the rust holes up and filling them in and sanding them as best I could and ordered up some Spray bed liner.

Well, while I waited for the spray in bedliner to come in, my compressor had some issues and I had to wait to get it fixed before I could spray the truck. and parts. Good thing....The Carolina Auto fair came to town and me and my buddy Joel headed out there as we always do and wouldn't you know it...I found 2 brand new fenders for $100 for the pair....and then stumbled upon 2 new doors for $100 each. $300 and I had all new metal...WOOT!

So I bought them and some new weather stripping for the doors and windows and set to fitting it all up.

http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt93/BC_99/Other%20vehicles/20150416_174012_zpscedbkmsa.jpg

I got the panels all fit up and sanded down for the bedliner to be sprayed and got my compressor fixed and was ready to go....

I spent some time last week and this week spraying it all. Here is the progress so far.

So that is where it sits now. Everyone says the pictures look like the coating is black, but it is a very dark blue. I will post up some pictures as I get it put back together and ready for the road, I have some repairs and black bedliner coating for the flatbed before I put it back on.

What do you guys think?

Looks Bad Arse!! I'm considering doing a bed liner coating to the bottom half of my work truck. I really dig the heavy texture!

Totally dig the bedliner! I bought a limo a couple years ago with a bad vinyl top which is the kiss of death for a limo. I removed the vinyl, cleaned up the welds a bit, and sprayed on a cheap bedliner. Looks great, plenty durable, and most people never even realize its a bedliner until they look really close or touch it. best of all was getting it done in a weekend for under 200 bucks! Looks great on your truck, your gonna love it!

that's some love right there cuz i would have plasti'd it right where it sat and been dunn widdit  BUT, you did it the correct way and for that, hat's off to ya bud ;) that spray coating stuff you used is radical, it's on the underside of Olive's hood with L05 mixed right in it. we did that with a very thin coat to hide the ugly underside of the glass hood :D

Thanks guys. I have made a little progress, but also had the Allstar showdown race Friday night, and the Allstar race last night, and am fighting a sinus situation of some sort, so I haven't felt like doing much today. I may go take some current pics and post the progress in a few minutes for anyone interested. I am happy with it do far.

That's a nice truck. I've seen that bed liner finish on a 70s Ford truck and some old Toyota Land Cruisers.

I'm just curious about what happens if the finish gets damaged, scraped, cut etc? Can it be resprayed?

It can be touched up with a brush or resprayed. Here are some pics of the current progress.

I still have to rebuild both vent windows with new rubber seals, and put the new felts and channels in both doors for the roll-up windows and reinstall the handles and latches and lock mechanisms and roll-up window assembly in the drivers door, and then install the new door panels. Put the hood back on and get it lined up, and then it will be time to move on to fixing the rusty flatbed so I can spray it and put it back on. It is coming along.

In the mean time... I bought a new dd to save some gas and miles on the Tacoma.

I hate the civic crowd, but hey...32+mpg and it will run for a long time if it is maintained properly.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, here are the update pictures. Cab, body, etc... is finished. I need to wire in the new tail lights and get to work on the bed now. I also intend to install new gas tanks while I have the bed off since both of the tanks have developed leaks in the last few years. It needs a new windshield maybe some window tint, and the seat needs to be redone, and think it will be done.
