huero
The trim on my hatch was looking really crappy a while back. So I decided I wanted to paint it. I had planned on doing a rattle can job at first. I read about plastidip on one of my car audio forums and decided to give that a try. I had heard a lot of good things and very little negative feedback. So, I gathered the scraps of newspaper and what not that I could find laying around my moms house (was passing through on leave, so I took advantage of her garage) cleaned up the parts I wanted to "dip" and went to work. I did thin layers, 10 in total I think, of black. After that I went with the gloss coat. I only did 5 layers of that. I let it dry for 45 min to an hour inbetween each coat. Thats a little bit longer then they recommend on the can, but it was a humid/rainy day in the midwest, so I figured it would only help and not hurt. It took a while to get everything done, but, it was really easy. The most difficult part, IMO, was when I peeled the tape off. I had to follow around with an exacto knife to make sure that I didnt peel the dip off the stuff I wanted it to cling to. I learned that the hard way with the first bit I went to pull off. Which leads me to my next thing. It is super easy to get off. all you have to do is pick at a little corner to get it started, then it peels off like elmers glue did when you smeared it all over your hands and let it dry. Well, maybe you all didnt do that, but it was a fun thing to do when I was in school... I had the whole thing peeled off and ready to be painted again in a ,matter of minutes. The only exception I would add to that is the trace "over spray" dots you get if you dont properly tape everything off. Even so, its not that bad. Also, with as easy as it was to peel off, it seems to hold up fairly well while driving. Keep in mind this is on the rear of the car though, so it doesnt see the kind of abuse something on the front of the car would. All in all though, I would say it worked out fairly well. I have since then done my front and rear wiper arms too. I have had all this done for the past month-month and a half now. Once I get the car clean again, I'll post pics of what it looks like now. I think next I might do the front grill and perhaps the black trim around the license plate on the back. Anyway, figured I would show you guys how it turned out and give a little review/look what I did post. Took them with my old phone. But, you get the point I suppose. As soon as it lets me post in the stereo section, I will post the pics of the stereo and pac-swx install. Till then, feel free to let me know what you think and have a good one.

BC_99
Looks nice, FYI there is a product by SEM that is a great trim paint that holds up well if the plastidip ever needs replacing. BC_99

I like the textured look.http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt93/BC_99/fiji/bW1jMS9EQ0lNL0NBTUVSQS9TU1BYMDA2NS5qcGc.jpg BC_99 Edited June 18, 2013 by BC_99
