How deep can I drill exhaust manifold stud holes for helicoil?

My 87 Conquest had a serious exhaust leak when I bought it (that the PO sweared he had fixed). I found the rear most exhaust manifold stud just fell out of the head. I helicoiled just that stud (using two small length helicoils that I wasn't all that happy about) and attempted to install the newly planed exhaust manifold with a new stock exhaust manifold gasket and new copper deforming OEM nuts. Holy hell do those new nuts have bite! None of the other studs stripped, but two of them BROKE
