MR2 Strut insert conversion (with airbags)

Recommended Posts

now although this is fairly low, I wanted to see how far we could take it, hehe

so, so the body wouldn't hit the jack, I stuck a 2x4 under the tire

We took the car down, until the tire hit the fender (will need rolling)

Bump steer city if you went that low! Is it even possible? That short stroke setup already looks to be at the end of its travel. Edited by SFBMX88

wouldn't help, the steering arm needs to stay parallel with the LCA, and if you have stock wheels, the tie rod will hit the rim if you move it very far (at least on stock front wheels). I have mookeeh's RCA on my car (pics above are not on my car)

Heres a thought I had about the LCA angle.. Prolly not the best idea, but after you get (which if you go that low you need to) 101's bump steer elim kit, if its not enough, why not bolt the ball joints on top of the LCA instead of under it? You could go as far as welding a [ shaped peice of angle iron on top of the LCA to box in the balljoint mounting plate... Just an idea... Edited by idriftjunk

well there you go, I haven't tried it, was just a quick thought..... I'm kinda going back through on my suspension set up, I think I'm causing more trouble than I need.. I'll have to post some pics.

I actually had issues with mookeeh's RCAs hitting my stock fronts (both 7's and 8's), but since I have 18's it wasn't an issue for me

RCA

RCA with 7" front (seated completely, but the tie rod is touching)

RCA with 8" front (would completely seat if I recall correctly)

RCA with my 18x8.5 front wheel

and only 0.687" thick

huh... I'm going back over my origional plans to switch to mustang spindles. I'm going to have a piece made that puts the steering arm infront of the k member, and stick with the stock style (eventually MK1 coilovers) for now. i tried switching them from side to side, but its going to mess up the caster when I steer. I'll post some pics this week.

BTW, that brake kit you have, are you able to use stock wheels? I thouhgt you said that you can't...but I can't remember.

no, I won't be able to, the rotor fits, but the caliper hits, even with an SHP 8 spaced out 20mm

So if you want to use the stock wheels, you need to go down to at least a 12.5" rotor

I'm questioning whether I want to use the brake kit, sell it, or save it for the next car, since I'm not sure if I want to NOT be able to run the stock wheels

Did a little "testing" tonight

Going off of this picture...

http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P6230021.jpg

I put some tape around where things will be

http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P7150130.jpg

Don't mind the tape around the bag, I'm using it to hold the bag in it's close to deflated height

http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P7150126.jpg

Now this is the measurement to the top of the gland nut...

http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P7150129.jpg

http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P7150128.jpg

when I have the strut on Technology's car, at this level...

http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P7120110.jpg

...I had about 2.5" to the bottom of the bearing on the camber plate.

since I was using the rear pillow ball mount, the bearing was 1/2" lower than it would be with the front camber plates. SO, I would still have 3" from the gland nut to the bearing, making that height 100% possible (if not 1/2" lower) than in the above pic.

Airbags are a go

hehe

at the height in the last pic...

here is a look inside the fender

http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P7120121.jpg

since I was using the rear pillow ball plate to test, I was able to sneak my camera down inside above the tire and get that pic.

The inner fender liner might need some massaging

But if I run the 18's, I'll be putting a 245/35/18 on the front rim. the stock size (SHP) in that pic is the 225/50 16, which has an overall height of 24.858". the 245/35 18 is only 24.752", so I'll have another tenth of an inch too.

Also at that height, it'll be riding on bumpstops, just gotta get some that'll be 2" long compressed, lol

that would involve cutting, as they two are welded together front the factory

And you'll NEVER get them back together the exact same way, you'd be better off using a spindle off another car if you want the strut and spindle separate

where are they welded? kinda looks like a pin going thru =( maby ill just make new spindles =/

I think that "pin" your thinking of, is just a pinch/crimp type of thing, but the only physical welds I can see are up in the bottom...

Decided to grab a cheap 120 volt compressor (tire inflator, haha), only because my curiosity was getting the best of me, hehe

this pic is of the bag at about 80psi, near the max extension height given in the bag's specs
