D_Venable
Yeah, I'm driving to my brother's in Iowa today, and then on to Minnesota tomorrow. I'm taking them with me, and the next steps are capping the holes where the SHP adjustment knobs were (might cut a section out of the 53mm cut I took from the rear struts and weld it on smooth, hehe, just an idea) and then have the perches welded on (had them made, and shipped to my apartment in Minneapolis) and then finish welding the struts together And yes, I'm making sure I do this right the first time, as this is a part of the car you DON'T want to f*** up Derek
89PalermoSHP
I know probably one of the finest welders in MN if you need anything welded here. He works from home so turn around is usually pretty fast. Ohhh... Im sure you already know this but... the paint needs to come off to weld so dont waste it all only to repaint them Edited March 4, 2009 by 89PalermoSHP
D_Venable
that's why I only put paint on one of them, hehe air angle grinder with 2" sanding discs make QUICK work of stripping paint, hehe

smallblock12
i have a question? why didnt you just cut out the section where you cut off the knob to shorten them? wouldn that be easier
D_Venable
I feel that that area is a little more "high stress" and feel more comfortable cutting above the spring perch area., but I would have been fine cutting out that area.
smallblock12
i think thats what i am gonna do cause i wont be able to patch that hole. ok question. what is the easiest way to take out the struts i found a set in a junkyard and cant get them out of the car
D_Venable
you take the 3 bolts holding it in, out? then pry the "clamp" on the hub apart? twisting from this point does pretty well (if you can) to break it loose from where the strut might be rusted to the hub. D_Venable
not really an update, but thought I'd share these pics, hehe 13" Brakes FTW http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/DSCF6201.jpg http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/DSCF6200.jpg http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/DSCF6199.jpg http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/DSCF6196.jpg :hmm3grin2orange:
D_Venable
went and helped Technology on his car again, and I took 2 of the struts along, and "tested" one of his coilover sleeves (same artinist coilover I have) these are without perches, but I have the rings that I'll be using for perches, just have to grind them open a tiny bit to slide down the casings. http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/DSCF6202.jpg sitting next to the rear wheel http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/DSCF6203.jpg front sitting next to the front wheel http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/DSCF6204.jpg I think I'm gonna look into long springs Derek
Sully
could add eibach helper springs.
D_Venable
tis true, I think I found the springs that JustPaus has talked about numerous times, Swift Springs: Swift Spring Coilover PDF can get up to a 10" length spring, and in the 70mm ID springs (I think that's what I've got, will have to measure to be sure) and a 2.76 free length helper spring (to create preload to keep the top hat in place at ALL times) I'll figure out what exactly I need/want after I get them installed, and go from there. Part numbers for calliper and rotor and details of the bracket would be great im looking for something very similar. Love ur work on the struts too am following it closely, and if i can find the top section of 2 rear shps like the piece you have cut off id be bout to weld them 2 Hard to find over here though unfortunately. D_Venable
The brakes are a 13" kit made by Revolution Brakes, formerly Precision Brakes Company (company that made the kit oscar sold years ago) got it off Ebay in November. as for the threaded section on the rear SHPs, they are the same threads as the front non-SHP struts, so if you have a spare set of those, you could cut the tops off of non-SHP rears, and weld the threads off a non-SHP front. I'm actually going to use front gland nuts on the rear as well, so I don't have to machine the SHP ones out

D_Venable
got bored, hehe, and opened two of the perch rings to slide over to struts. I have some electric tape wrapped around the strut body to hold the rings up in place http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/DSCF6219.jpg http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/DSCF6218.jpg http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/DSCF6221.jpg the coilover's threaded sleeves are 130mm in length, and I'm leaving a few mm extra open on top Front http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/DSCF6217.jpg http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/DSCF6216.jpg Rear http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/DSCF6223.jpg http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/DSCF6222.jpg http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/DSCF6224.jpg :dancing:

slowquest
Derek, looking at those wheel spacers, I don't see how that's going to work since the "original" studs stick out so far. Can you cut them off or is there something I'm missing? Maybe your wheels are the dual bolt pattern and there will be enough room??
Technology
We tried a spacer on my car and yes, the stock studs will need to be shaved down a bit. Or as Mel Brooks put it, "snip the tip."
Sully
depends.. the stock wheels don't have a deep indentation to fit the stock studs but my SVT wheels fit fine, no trimming needed. I'd assume the Sparco 18's he runs will be fine too. Stock wheels... .definatley not. but he can't fit stock wheels with those brakes anyway. This is the craptacular spacer I used to run on the front. There was tones of thread sticking through. SQ wheels no go. SVT mustang.. http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l279/ntsullivan/p_00023.jpg plenty of room in the recess area... http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l279/ntsullivan/R04%20Conquest/Parts/101_0366.jpg Edited March 22, 2009 by Sully
D_Venable
my sparcos don't clear either, about 3mm needs to come off the tips of the studs, so I'll take 5mm out to be safe, hehe if I wasn't going to go so low, or run a wider tire than I currently have (currently a 235/40/18, going to a 245/35/18) I'd just go straight to a 20mm spacer and forget about it all. but I think +2mm offset might be a bit much with a 245 tire Edited March 22, 2009 by D_Venable
