A Pillar 3 gauge Pod

So since no one makes a 3 gauge pod for our cars, let alone a 2 gauge pod for the manual seat belts I decided to make one work.

Here is what I started with and progress after about 4 hours. Updates will follow

It's a sunpro pod universal style that I cut and hit with a heat gun to get it close. I know it's rough as all hell at the moment. Another layer or two of fiberglass and some serious sanding/filing with a little bondo to smooth it over and it should come out pretty good. This ain't my first fiberglass rodeo ;)

http://www.starquestclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=73468 2 gauge. should ask mech or boosted where to get it

Thats a dual pod for power seatbelts. Hes making a pod for a manual seatbelt car where the Apillar are totally different and flat rather than humped in the center.

I checked and mocked it up in the car with a couple screws through it before any fiberglass went on and the angle is damn near perfect. Where I sit with the seat all the way back I am looking right squarely at them, I am also 6'3" ;)

You are right Phinko. I have seen the pods for auto seatbelts but not for the manual ones.

Thanks!

Here is the current progress. Another day or two and a few more cans of elbow grease should have it ready for paint.

Thinking of doing it with flat paint, or one of those textured spray paints so it will hide any minor imperfections.

Either way i am real happy with it so far.

Looks super sharp....been thinking of doing that for some years new.....imagine having josh making these in carbon fiber.....

Yeah Im 5' 11 so that probably makes up for it but I guess it really comes down to how your seat is set. Looking awsome! We may talk in the future.

so I have it looking pretty good. A little more smoothing to do but it's pretty much done.

I will post pics of the finished product and with it installed hopefully tomorrow

My girlfriend does plaster model horses and tells me that she can make a mold of it for me so i may be able to make a bunch of these if there is interest.

A solid fiberglass part would be much better.

As it looks right now

Done! Well still in primer but I love it. Just have to decide on a color for it and it's all good. I think it turned out great!

The gauges are for fitment only .. i know they are crooked ;)

You gonna sell these man??? Looks good

Thanks!

Still looking into making a mold so I could mass produce them.

I have talked to a few companies about making replicas, or just a mold and it's quite expensive.

I hope to figure something out. I'll keep you posted.

coat it with about 6-10 coats of good quality wax, let that dry for at least 5 minutes after the last "wax off"

then you'll want some surface coat, let that tack up, then lay at least 4 layers of glass on it, let the resin cure, and then the next day, pop the original part out, and you have yourself a fiberglass mold.

This is of course if you can do it with a one piece mold, you might have to cap off the gauge holes, and then cut them in when trimming the "new" parts though.

You can also do plaster molds, this requires no surface coat, but you'll want to lay it up with 3-4 layers of fiberglass matte, and then one layer of glass cloth (for strength)

So this is for a manual seat belt, I need for automatic seat belt. Let me know if you can make one, my interior is beige. I guess black on top should look ok, since my interior is beige and black.

Thanks,

Mike

I'm not worried about the color at all really. The pillar is flat black on the driver's side and stock on the pass. Maybe someday I'll paint to match but no time soon.

As far as making any more of these it doesn't look good. I have zero interest in making another one the way I did it because it took a VERY long time. I may take a crack at making a mold myself someday, but again, no time soon.
