Hey starquest members it's nice to meet you all ! new bee online. Just got 87 TSI and the stock boost gauge reads between -7 and -14 on idle. It does not look rigth to me (my first turbo car) is this normal ? I all so put the RPM's up to 5,000 and it went up to +2 and I let off. Am I in the rigth range or do I have a boost leak or something else ? The heads are making loud ticking noise so I pulled the value cover off and I found one of the rocker eating away the cam and I notice the rocker arms are not adjustable ones. What do you think happened ? It was just one I have never seen this before. .(the heads are not stock they dont have jet values) All input is appreciated!!I'll see if I can post some pictures soon.

The stock boost gauge is crap, it's an approximation. Get an aftermarket gauge. The negative readings are vacuum by the way.

Yeah umm... Don't do that again. I'm assuming you did that in neutral? Yeah, don't.

The lifters are hydraulic. And post some pics of the damaged(rocker eating into the cam) area's..

Did you buy the car from someone on the forums?

the cam is damage'd by the lifter colapseing and the owner continueing to drive it that way , now your gona need a new cam,,new rocker and new lifters,, the normal cause for lifters going bad is trast in the oil,, trash in the oil normaly comes form worn timeing chain guides , and can if bad enought distroy the engines brgs and plug the oil feed to the turbo , in other words not good for anything ,,only one way to stop it,, redo the timeing chain system,, the good news is it's not all that hard and every thing comes in one kit sept for gaskets

one thing i forget if that is your problem,,ignoreing it will almost certianly cause your engine to self distruct

Are you sure the rocker is eating the cam, lifter collapsed, bent valve stem or the rocker shaft is broken?

First you need to determine what's going bad/ broken.

Do not run that engine until you've fixed it.

Also check your timing chain...you might need to replace it, the tensioner and the guides. When removing the timing chain cover, take note of the bolt length and where it came from. There are different length bolts on it...they MUST go back where they came from.

Might be a good idea to drop the oil pan and check for bearing chaff/ other debris. This will determine if an engine rebuild is in order. Make sure if there is debris to flush the turbo oil lines, turbo and oil cooler.

Cam eaten means a new cam and lifters...ALL lifters must be replaced with a new cam. Replace/ refurbish other valvetrain parts as needed. A bent valve stem will mean you'll need to remove the head to replace the valve. If valve replacement is needed, I'd also replace all the valve seals.

Thanks guys!!!!! I have taking some pictures I'll post tomorrow and the more I check the car the more I fine problems but it's not going to stop me from making tsi from running and looking good again. I bought it for 600 and it made a 3 and a half hour drive to it's new home with out a problem or I should say with all the problems. It has injector leak , it has two nuts missing on the turbo manifold one nut missing from the turbo down pipe , the alternator wire was barely connected , head ligths were not working (burned fuse like box), bad ground cable. She's a. Warrior. “I did not buy this car on this site" the eci is from a 89 and the heads look very clean inside, so the previous owner did a horrible job in putting the car back together. I be posting photo's mid day friday. Thanks

I'd replace that little fusible link part if I were you  ( the part behind your battery ) that was one SERIOUS meltdown

Also, like Just_Paus said - never rev these car up in neutral. It's not healthy for them.

Sweet car. Take the time and fix it right. It won't pull an accurate boost reading without a load on it, so no more neutral revs. If it needs a cam and rockers, post in the wanted forum. I'd likely go with mechanicals, but that's me. You'll need a new/different fusible link box, and there's injector topics floating around right now too. You've come to the right place.

the oiling hole in the rocker arm for that cam lobe may be clogged or the rocker shafts are wrong or upside down

the shafts in the first cam tower cap don't look right, the right one appears to stick out too far maybe that's just the camera angle

the front cap should have notches and dots on the shafts that line up but that won't tell you if they are hydraulic shafts or mechanical, hydraulic shafts are what you should have so slide one rocker arm forward off the lobe and see it you have a machined slot in the rocker arm on the outboard side and I can't tell what direction your camera is if that is intake or exhaust lobe
