Quest for mid 13's

Recommended Posts

So this is my Quest for a daily driven full interior car that can reliably pull consistent 13 second 1/4 mile slips on street tires. But most important, it has to take me to work and back everyday.

Well I thought Id put it all in a post for others to see. Hopefully answer some questions for the newbs and maybe save some people a few bucks.

A little background:

Moved to TX in OCT 06 and immediatly bought me another Quest which turned out to be a Lemon!! Didnt even make it the trip home. Paid $1500 for a supposed reliable car and it blew the head gasket/ warped the head maybe 20min into the drive. Stupid me, reliable Conquest. I should have known I was being conned then and there! Anyways, after a couple weeks of the runaround from TylerQuest I said screw and pressed on.

The Rest:

Did what I could to make it a nice reliable drive but by December this motors time was up. Driving to work one night I saw the oil pressure flux and then hit the floor! Pulled over and the engine was drenched in oil. So I refilled it and got the rest of the way to work. End of my shift I come out and no start! 30min of tinkering and it starts and runs fine... hmmmmm...... I get to the base gas station to refill the oil again (I know this thing done but I wanna get home.) Guess what, no start. But this time its done. I get it to the base Hobby Shop, pull the pan and imagine that. Metal shards the size of toothpicks littering the pan.

Pulled the Caravan head that replaced the warped one from the original trip home. Took it to the machinist and what do you know! its cracked! The typical between the valves crack and a really ackward intake runner crack. Hmmm... Oh Well.

Well, 2 weeks later I got it all together and it rolled out and came home with me. :D

Car came with an already installed Centerforce Stg II Clutch so thats not a prob at the moment and I dont plan on it coming to be.

While the motor was apart I removed the divider and ported the TB Inlet. I also gutted out the stock Exhaust manifold which is a service I provide in my sig. (Shameful Plug ;) )

Broke the motor in and went to the track! Best I could muster was like a 10.6 1/8mi!! :x

The stock turbo was junk and urinating oil into my new motor so it had to go. So I called my buddy in Fort Worth who I knew had a 14B TD05H Laying around. He thought that it was blown but didnt know for sure so we bargained it down to $50 bones and the deal was done.

Turns out, the turbo was perfectly fine HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! IN YOUR FACE JAY!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Also picked up a 1G Eclipse/Talon BOV, Dodge Modded it and mounted it up with the new turbo.

Back to the track.

10.1 1/8mi

At this time I was running no boost control so it was only pulling 8psi of the stock actuator.

Now my main concern when pursuing this is to keep it safe and not push the motor too hard. So I dont want to boost the crap out of it to get into the 13's. So I figuring making small improvements, utilizing them to their max, and at the same time improving my driving skills will get me there.

Well during my driving, I noticed that sometimes under load Ill have power up top and other times it falls off. So I figure its got to be fuel. I had already changed the intank filter, engine filter, and injector clips. I installed an extra Autometer AF meter I had to see what was up and it def wasnt getting the gas needed for boost. So I figure its got to be a weak pump.

Well, pulled it out and it was like the thing was pumping pure earwax.

$120 Walbro 255HP --- APE http://www.apeusa.com/

Swapped that out and its definatly noticeable. But its still feels as if there should be more so I hook up a 1g MAS I also had sitting around. (BINGO!)

It definatly breathes better up top. I also had a TurboXS DSBC that I installed and set boost to 10psi.

Took it to the track and went 9.73

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u37/philpressure/Black%20Rocket/elim1.jpg

I talked to Monty and he gave me some good tips about playing with tire pressures to help my poor 60ft's and maybe advancing the timing a bit. While I was at it I rolled boost to 12psi.

Well it definately helped. :) After 2 trips I got my 60's to 2.1's and my ET to 9.45

http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10142/9_45.JPG

Watching my meter during my runs I was thinking, it needs to have some more fuel. I add an adjustable FPR I had from before. So coupled with the stock 1:1 ratio. This would bring it to a 2:1 ratio. Its definately richer and running stonger.

I had been searching for a used 2.5 downpipe for a while and finally found one for a good price so I snatched it up. I installed it the day it arrived. Feeling frisky I decided to tack it to the track. I notice boost had climed to 14.5 on its own by dumping the stock junk pipe.

I felt confident in my fuel system so I decided to roll it up the rest of the way to 15psi.

At the track I was able to squeeze off a single 9.10 pass!! Almost there! :)

http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10142/9_10.JPG

The rest of the night I was camping in the 9.2's but I was plenty happy. Best part was I was consistantly dropping 2.0 60fts.

http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10142/drag4.jpg

Now in order for me to pull 13's I figure Ill need to be pulling 8.9's at a minimum. And I want it to be consistent 13's so it ant be an occassional 8.9. So Im gonna be aiming for somewhere more in the 8.8's and 8.7's.

Review time!!

Well, the port work / gutting I did to the TB Inlet and Ex Man where definately worth it!! Turbo really breathes. I cant recommend it more. If you or someone you know can do it, get it done. If not, I can handle it for a small fee. (Another shameful plug ;) )

With those Schneider springs in place of the stockers the motor happily pulls past 5500rpm's!! If your running a stock cam and feel your running outta breath early (4500-5000) you should definately swap those in.

Oh yeah! Get rid of the stock downpipe at all cost! flow flow flow! You cant have enough!

Very nice right up. I think you would be close now breaking into the 13's. A little more practice and you are there. Those are good times for the work you have done, especially on a daily driver.

Sorry, but i dont comprehend 1/8 mile times. When are you going to run the full 1/4?

Thanks Heef. I think it would be possible for me to pull a 13 on the current setup. But if I did it would probably be just barely. I want the car to do it consistenetly and easily. Which is why I need to push it into the 8's in the 1/8th.

Im probably not gonna hit a 1/4mi in a long time. 1/8 is what I have locally so its not hard to make it out there.

Just look at some 13sec timeslips. See what the time on the 1/8 portion says.

So when you going to pay me? And do you still need a fuel rail?

Valve springs aren't the issue with revving past 5000 or 5500 rpm, it's the turbo itself, look at the thread I started in this section about 4bangerT's car, all it has is a t3 with big exhaust, hard pipes and mild boost around 9 or 10 psi max, but the power stayed flat till 6000k rpm.

the exhaust side of the stock turbo is way too small. I recommend a t3 in size .82 a/r stage 3 or 5 wheel minimum.

SO.... WHERES MY MONEY?!?!? Hit 13's in the 8th yet?

Hmmm theres no way I was making anywhere near 275hp in mine when I was pursuing this. Maybe close to 215. Hell Im back at 7psi now.

With 275 ish should be able to get you in the high 12's with it working just right. To get in the 13's its not that hard with 204rwhp to the wheels I have drove a full bodyed quest to a 13.8 its just a matter of getting it to all work out just right.

Were you running slicks? If not, what brand of street tire were they? I was spinning through first when I launched at 4000, bogging down if I left from any less.

I got a 13.8 with 204hp I did it with the stock tire size and then I changes to a Nitto 245/45 and did not change the times I got. Its all in how you drive it you don’t just smash the gas and hang on like they all show in the movies you have to drive feather the gas bring it to the point where it will spin a bit but where your still moving. As you let the clutch up you do the same making sure you maintain your target rpms I don’t think I every on street tires was more then 3k on a launch.

Thanks for the lesson but I've been drag racing since I could reach the pedals. I would like to see your time slip on that pass, not that I don't believe you, I would just like to know all of the conditions and times from start to finish.

I had it all on my web page. (T-Racing) I had I am working on trying to get it back to me the back up. It was my free/cheep mod car That was done with a 12a running at 21psi. I will keep looking around for I think that some one backed up that part of my page. The 60ft I belive was all most a flat 2.0

Just want to say the T-Racing brothers were in the low 13s back when I got my first quest in 2000.

They are the king of cheap speed. Hey Matt! U guys need to start making exhaust manifolds again..

do you recall your 1/8mi info?? I was hitting 2.1 - 2.3 60fts and 9.1-9.4's in the 1/8th on Fuzion 245/45's at around 22psi in the tires. 15psi boost.
