re45115
Does anyone know whats different between the 3-87+ cylinder head gaskets sets and the prior - 2/87 sets? Thanks
Dad
I believe the head gasket was changed after 03-87 I have seen recommendations on this site to use the later head gasket set on earlier engines. That's what we are doing but have yet to open the set. Randy
JAinsworth
This is copied from an email sent to me by Shelby117 and his recommendations: I have had very good luck useing the fel-pro gaskets , right down to the exh gaskets , with no problems at all . HS9116 Pt and CS 8788-1 lower end conversion set thats all the gaskets and seals for the entire engine , includeing the steel turbo gaskets
Professor Quest
I love those Fel Pro sets. Dad, Have you ever see the Fel-Pro "Head Saver" head gasket? It's thicker to make up for machinig the head.
Shelby
the only diff i have found on the 84 up to 87 and the 88/89 sets were the head gaskets , they were up grade'd to the 9116 , on the very early 83 sets the inj houseing gasket would not fit the 84 up ,but the 88/89 set will fit the 84 up inj houseings so the best yr's to get are the 88/89 set or the HS 9116PT , even if you have an 83 car HS means head set , it's not the head gasket alone so it does cost more , but well worth it , the best priceing i have found was buying a set from clear water cyl head at the same time i bought the head
Dad
Proffessor, We prefer the Fel-pro kits over any others. The head saver is a shim used between the block and head gaskets .020 thick.. saved many a head that had been surfaced a few times. Plus they make the wire-loc gaskets.. simple to use just need to put a reciever groove in the head. No pressing wire into the block and screwing around with getting ends butted together. Professor Quest
I only use Fel-pro myself. But have never seen the other gaskets you mentioned. I use advanced cam sprockets that I make. The "wire lock" sounds interesting. I'll check it out. Thanks. I don't know about the shim with a turbo. Makes me nervous.
re45115
Thanks. It looks like HS9116 Pt and CS 8788-1 lower end conversion set are what I need for the new head and BSE and Timing Chain replacement.
Shelby
the CS8788-1 is the complete lower block set, oil pan , rear main seal the works,, for the frt cover you can use the timeing cover set , cheaper,, $10.00 or so

ZeroKewl9
I'm at a crossroads.. I'm waiting on my head from machine shop and I have both of the best head gaskets at the moment. fel-pro 9116 and a MetalShim unit from TEP which is orig from spain or something.. Head is going on a daily driver 88 auto and I will occasionally run 17psi but not all the often. I just want it not to LEAK.. Also I have the ARP stud kit Any ideas? Comments... Tim_C.
If you have the TEP Metal Shim, use it. It is the best gasket available that I know of. As for the 9116PT head gasket, it has a thicker graphite layer than the earlier 8770PT gasket. This is to allow the head to move more, to accomodate the extra expansion from the added heat and pressure from going to 10PSI. Also, some parts houses use a Fel-Pro set that is premade by another company. The set # starts with a KS, and is a Fel-Pro set. That company has made a grave error in their cross compatibility efforts to streamline their products, and lower their inventory. What they did was to make the earlier, pre-88 sets, the ONLY set available through them. So, they will give you that set if you ask for an '88-'89 set. You must specify the HS9116PT head set number, and do not order the set by the year of the car, or you will get the old Fel-Pro set, that is known to blow the head gasket on the '87's with 7PSI boost. Bottom line, do not use the 8770PT head gasket.

Professor Quest
He meant the oil filter adapter end. But you should flush your cooler and the hoses which means 8 seals. But that's your choice.
