Starfighterpilot
Probably the speedo cable has snapped inside of the jacket. It probably was never pulled and relubed in it's 20 something years of life. For What It's Worth. KEN
TexasQuest
Check the connection behind the cluster. It might have slipped off.
Squrlsquash
its the plastic connector on the back of the instrument cluster (right behind the speedo)takes some fiddling to get it loose, especially when they've not been removed before - try not to force it or break other stuff while your'e back therekeep track of what screws go where as you take the cluster apart Most likely the speedo cable needs to be replaced (runs from the back of the transmission under the car, through firewall, into the back of the speedo.follow the path of the one you're removing, will make routing it easier - zip ties to keep in place
Malykaii
If none of the above works... I know most cars had metal speedo gears, however some had plastic ones, possibly the non abs ones or something. Those plastic gears tend to break. I doubt it's the problem, more likely it's the cable, but just a thought.

jamez9538
Would this also apply to a jumping speedo? Mine has always looked like teeth were skipping or something up until about 30, smooths out. Is there a write-up on removal and maintenance or should I reference the manual for such information? TexasQuest
The FSM shows it all pretty straight forward.

A jumping around speedometer needle is indicative that the cable is crudded up with old crusty grease in it's jacket. Get a new cable from Mitsu. For What It's Worth.
