Strong Gas Smell when BOV pops

I get a very strong gas smell when my bov pops, otherwise nothing under normal driving..

 

No leaks any where.....

 

Mostly stock minus 16g, Greddy Type S, *DM 3" exhaust with no cats, bse, 1g maf, mbc..

 

Cars runs very smooth... Only other symptom is hard to start after its warm....

 

Running 14psi...

Have you checked to see if that lemon shaped o-ring on the TB is leaking under boost? Has to be a leak at the TB somewhere. You have to be running stupid rich to get any significant gas fumes out of the BOV. Even then I don't think you would smell it.

Do you have a Wideband Gauge installed? If so, and your set up is not a bypass.....Your WB Gauge will go rich (like 10.0 at blow off). That means.....Fuel smell, Especially on a 1st Gen MAS. 1st Gen MAS set ups run rich by nature, and there isn't much you can do about it, why? No means of adjusting the Air/Fuel ratios. You should try a Maf-Translator so you can adjust the A/F Ratios via a Wideband. Blow off valves that are not recirculated (by way of a by-pass) will cause your car to run rich at blow off. My Maf-T set up runs rich at shift points, but only for a split second. Start your car up and spray Starting Fluid on the hoses. Any change in Idle is a air leak. Look for Fuel Leaks!!!!

 

The only way to know for sure where your car is running at: Idle, Midrange and Wide Open Throttle is via the Wideband Gauge. Anything else is just a guesstamation ;)

 

Hard to start when warm?

 

Fuel Pump control system malfunction.

Distributor signal generator or igniter malfunction.

Vacuum hose disconnected or damaged.

Power is not supplied to ECU.

ECI system malfunction.

Idle switch malfunction.

Injector malfunction.

Damaged resistor.

Improper fuel pressure.

Damaged ECU.

Harness broken/short-circuited or connector not connected securely.

 

That should keep you busy :D

at no time does any IC pipe or hose have any fuel air mix in it , that being said even if the bov was wide open all the time you will not have any gas smell

 

so I think the guys and the lemon shaped oring are on the right track , or a hose off the intake some place

I'd bet you have an exhaust leak, maybe right after the turbo. When the BOV pops it releases air that has been metered, so the car runs rich right after it blows and that blows out the exhaust pipe. If you have a leak at the back of the turbo or even at the bottom of the down pipe it'll get sucked in through your dash vents. I think you'd have an idle issue if the throttle body o--ring was leaking enough for you to smell gas.

Injectors are above the throttleplate.

A BOV near the throttlebody you will smell some fuel when the BOV opens, you can't avoid it.

The idle motor is extened when you are driving so even if you lift the pedal the throttle plate doesn't close completely and when that air pressure is evacuated it will siphon out that tiny bit of fuel that was there and you can smell it but you shouldn't be able to see it, it should be atomized in the air change that is escaping. The other thing is that since its a wet throttlebody, or injection mixer as its properly called, when a larger BOVs piston closes the air AND FUEL can be drawn into that little port off the side of the throttlebody just below the throttle plate and over time may fill the hose and the BOV not work properly.
