Techboy's 88 Conquest Engine Rebuild and Engine Bay Makeover

I mentioned 2 posts ago that I found out from the machine shop that my head was cracked. Originally, the head I sent over was off my 58K Starion, thinking that was the lower milage head of the two I had, I figured that would be the better one to have rebuilt, but I guess not. Turns out though, I was able to get a spare bare head from NudeLobster and I'm having the whole valve train swapped over into the new head. Should be a nice fresh setup when it comes back.

Here's a pic of the 58K head that was cracked:

Here's a pic of the bare head I bought from NudeLobster:

So, now it's just a waiting game until the head comes back from the machine shop complete.

In the meantime, I did get back my other valve cover from the powdercoater. The mitsu logo was supposed to be red, but everytime he would powdercoat it red it would bleed into the surrounding gunmetal and he couldn't figure out why. Which is why he held it after I picked up the rest of the stuff, he wanted to see if he could figure out why. In the end, he couldn't get it to work, so it's just glossed aluminum. If I want I could probably mask it off and brush or spray on some red. Haven't decided what I'm going to do. I'll probably just end up leaving it.

Oh, and the rings from DAD showed up a few weeks ago. Next weekend the rings get installed and pistons go back in. Hopefully the head shows up soon and I can put it all back together and get it back in the car ... almost done .... the end is in sight. (Hoping by mid-to-end of June)

Sorry, I forgot to take some pics from the top w/ all the pistons in. Next time I work on the motor and have it unwrapped I'll snap some more pics. I checked all ring end gaps in each individual cylinder to make sure they weren't too tight. I forgot about the bevel on ring #2 on the first 2 pistons, so I had to take them back out to check them. Turned out one was right, the other was upside down. Glad I remembered it when I did and not when I was about to turn the key.

I can't work on the car this coming weekend, got things going on w/ memorial day and all that, but I'm hoping to hit it more the following weekend. If the head is back by then I can work on building the long block. If it's not back by then, I'll start prepping the engine bay for paint. Stay tuned.

Here's some pics of the new head all done. This is NudeLobster's old bare head, my valvetrain, new valves, new springs, and JVE kit installed.

I need to take the hardware off the rockers where the JV's used to bolt on. Last thing I need is that stuff coming loose and bouncing around in the head.

Also, I know I haven't posted as much lately, but stuff has been happening in the background. I have the alternator completely reassembled (since the outer housing was powdercoated), and I tore my TB apart and repainted it. Even though I just rebuilt it 9 months ago, I had painted it silver, and it no longer matched the new color scheme, so it's now gunmetal grey, and I've also painted the new water pump to match.

Oh, and the transmission has been completely scrubbed down and degreased. It's now ready for primer and paint. This is all taking forever, but it's going to worth it when it's done.

Here's the work I did degreasing the transmission a few weeks back. I used Purple Power, a tooth brush, and a scrub brush and some brake cleaner. Oh, and a cat liter pan. :P

This past week, I laid on some primer and some paint. I chose a battleship grey color simply becuase I had an extra unused can in the basement and I figured you don't really see the tranny much anyway.

I'm heading to the shop on Wed (where the shell is currently stored) to take a look at the rear brakes. They're locked up from sitting for the past year. Once I get so that I can push it around a bit easier I should be able to get moving on cleaning up the engine bay. If anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears ....

I worked on the car all day Wednesday. I completely finished the interior. I had removed the dash to do some work behind it. That has been re-installed and the interior of the car is back together. I also starting removing "stuff" from the engine bay in preparation for paint. And, I began painting the underside of the hood. DupiColor semi-gloss black, which is also what the engine bay will be.

I skimped a little bit where the heat shield gets mounted. Took about 2 1/2 cans to get a nice even look. Weld seams are taped, so you'll see a little bit of white wrap around when the tape is off.

EDIT: Here's an updated picture with the tape off the weld seams:

Today I started the paint job on the engine bay. Although, I admit, this is kinda the quick-and-dirty way to do it. Typically, I'd like to pull everything out of the bay, but since this Quest is really just a donor for the Starion, I'm just trying to clean up the look a bit. What I did basically was move wires and fluid lines out of the way, remove things that could be removed, shoot the paint, and then reinstall them. I didn't quite finish, I'll wrap up the drivers side next time. Here's where I'm at so far ----->

GETTING STARTED/RADIATOR AREA:

PASSENGER FENDER WELL:

1/2 WAY AROUND: (I should have taken another pic inbetween - opps!)

http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/176/dscf1137s.jpg

I think it looks soooo much better. Doing this may seem pointless to some since this isn't the intended car for the motor, but I figure it makes good practice for when I get around to working on my Starion. project.

Last Wednesday I had a chance to finally finish up the engine bay. I know it's been almost a week since last wed, but this is the first time I've had to sit at the computer for an extended time in the last week.

Anyway, here's some photos of the engine bay finally complete:

DRIVERS SIDE FRONT (photo is taken standing next to passenger door toward front of car where washer fluid tank sits):

DRIVERS FENDER W/ ECU and FUSIBLE LINKS REMOVED:

DRIVERS FENDER PAINTED:

FIREWALL:

DRIVERS FENDER COMPLETE:

http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/9486/dscf1143r.jpg

PIC OF WHOLE ENGINE BAY:

http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/2752/dscf1142g.jpg

I still need to remove some of the painters tape and do some little things, like paint and put some brackets back in, but other than that the engine bay is pretty much done and just about ready to accept the motor back. For the amount of time I put into it I'm very pleased w/ the outcome.

I had just a little bit of time to turn my attention to the engine the other night. I didn't get far, but I did get the oil filter housing remounted, the oil pump back on, and the ARP head studs threaded in. Not much, but I'm in position now to get the motor timed and get the head installed. You can see in the pic the oil pan is in place too, but it just hanging there by like 4 bolts just to keep and dust and dirt from kicking up inside.

OIL PUMP AND OIL FILTER HOUSING:

I'm hoping next time I work on the car I can get the motor completely finished up and ready to put back in. Getting close now ..... gulp.

CHAIN AND SPROCKET:

I know that's not much, but that's about all the farther I got b/c I realized I need a new dowel pin on the sprocket. Gotta find one of them b/f I can move on ....
