I gotta tell you Tech... you do nice clean work! You make it look like a breeze, & I know better, @ least for me. Don't think you're all that far from me (north Maryland, just short of the Pa. line on Rt. 15) Anytime you're bored, I welcome some help! Really nice job, congrats! ;)

Looking good. Who did your oil cooler lines?

Me. I didn't really do anything though, I just cleaned up and cleaned out (with brake clean) the stock lines. The black braided part you see in the pics is actually the stock line, just with the rubber sheathing cut off. I actually didn't do the job I really wanted to. I wanted to paint the bare metal, b/c they're going to be all rusted in a matter of weeks, but I was feeling the pressure to get as much done as I could yesterday.

However, one night when I was surfing around on there I found a write up (I believe it was from Dad) on how to take them apart and crimp new ends. I'll have to see if I can find the thread again.

EDIT: Found it, it's actually the first thread under the "New Owners" in the FAQ section. http://www.starquest...howtopic=125941

  • 3 weeks later...

Dropped off my radiator at Rieter's Radiator in Emmaus PA last week to have it rodded out and refurbished. Very excited to see what it looks like when I get it back. Here's the before:

Thanks for the info tg ... when I eventually swap this motor into the Starion down the road I'll have to take them back apart and do that. I was unaware of that. Thanks for the info.

Ok ... so yesterday's goal was to finally finish this motor and turn the key on my now 17 month long build and hear it run for the first time. Here's what I had to do to finish up:

INSTALL THE ALTERNATOR:

http://imageshack.us/a/img221/4544/dscf1417b.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img832/8412/dscf1418b.jpg

RUN THE WIRING HARNESS (not much to see in this particular pictures, this is the just the beginning of starting to re-run the harness. This took me a lot of time b/c I had to re-solder a lot of broken lines, shirnk tube, etc....)

http://imageshack.us/a/img827/38/dscf1419o.jpg

INSTALL THE REFURBISHED RADIATOR:

http://imageshack.us/a/img694/739/dscf1421c.jpg

BRAND NEW RAD HOSES FROM ROCKAUTO:

http://imageshack.us/a/img402/8136/dscf1422m.jpg

And then ....... there should be more pictures of the IC pipes, the air box, and other misc stuff going in and all that, (b/c I actually did finish installing everything!), but things went downhill about 10 minutes to turning the key for the first time. Here's what happened:

As I'm filling the radiator with water, about 3/4 of the way into it I hear the dreaded noise of water dripping on the floor. It didn't take me long to find water pouring out of my TB. Turns out the gasket got a little folded when I installed it and it didn't seat right. Don't know how I missed that, but it happened. Anyway, I tore everything apart to fix it, but of course when I was trying to remove the gasket it tore ..... and no autopart store has one in stock (imagine that!) ..... so the quickest I can get one is Thursday. I was pretty ticked yesterday, but after a night's sleep it's not so bad I guess. A $6 gasket is not a big deal, and it's already been 17 months, so what's a few more days till I start it up ..... lol. So, I guess I'll try to work on this again Friday night and let you guys know what happens then.

Good luck. Set the timing immediately then go out on the highway and do a bunch of WOT pulls. Don't clutch it at the top of the gear, just let off and let it coast back down in gear. Get that vacuum good and high. This will break in the motor properly.

I'm with you on the break in philosophy ... what do you mean by "set the timing"? I assume you mean check the timing and adjust the dizzy accordingly once it's idling.

Thanks for the well wishes. If been at this point with other builds I've done in the past in other cars and it always make me anxious.

Lookin good. The alt belt looks too big. Should fit in the water pump pulley groove better. If thats the 17380 id go with the 15386.

Ya know ... I noticed that myself when I put it on. The belt that was on this motor before the rebuild was is a 15380 (it doesn't look like it's in half bad shape) and the new one I bought from Rock Auto is a 17380, as mentioned. You think I should switch it out for the 15380 I have?

Is this one of those situations where OEM is supposed to be one thing, but everybody uses something else b/c it fits better? Eclipse's have a similar issue with the alternator belt ....

UPDATE:

I picked up the new TB gasket tonight and re-installed that tonight. Also swapped the alternator belt out for the thinner one, so all minor issues are taken care of.

Got the motor / car all prepped for initial startup ....

The Good: After 17 month build ... fired right up! :D Had a nice even idle at about 1k..

The (very) Bad: No oil pressure. At all.

I got no pressure in the head and it was tapping like crazy so I had to shut her down. I cracked the turbo feed line. Nothing there. Spun the filter off. Bone dry. I'm thinking there's an issue with the pickup. I thought maybe I forgot to install it, but I can see it in one my pics from back in Sept of this thread. Maybe I didn't tighten it down (??), or the o-ring didn't seat right. I'm pretty sure I would have used the new one out of my gasket set. I'm perplexed, but if the filter's dry, it's not picking oil up out of the pan for some reason. Gonna have to drop the pan and take a look. Argh. So close.

If you got input I'd love to hear it.

Don't know if it makes a difference, but I used the Felpro kits. You can see a photo I took of them on the first page of this. Unfortunately, it looks like (according to the dates of this thread) I installed the pickup back in Sept and I just don't have a clear memory anymore of how it went or what I did. Then again, I don't even know for sure if it is the pickup causing this problem. Edited by techboy

take the oil cooler lines off the filter housing. Pour oil into one of the holes and it'll go into the main oil galley. This should allow some oil to go into the pump and create the necessary seal to draw oil up the pipe. Also check that there is actually oil in it.

Just running it at first should be enough to draw some oil in. Here are mechanical reasons it might not be working:

No O-ring on the pickup tube

Pick up tube not seated in pump

Pump chain not installed

Pump not installed.

Gears inside pump not installed.

No oil.

BTW, don't run it anymore until you figure this out. If you only looked at the gauge, be sure you're looking at the right one. I once rebuilt my engine and watched the coolant temp gauge. I thought I had no oil pressure, but after checking everything, I realized I was just stupid.

I used the felpro oring that is supplied in the lower end kit and it worked for me. Was a nice and tight fit. If you need one I think Coke is selling them.

I appreciate the feedback guys .... to address a few items:

  • I did prime the pump ... but again, that was probably like a year ago. I never planned on this project taking so long - I also didn't plan on moving and having another baby in that timeframe. I don't know if time was enemy here (??)
  • I took the little peep hole off the front case and disconnected the injectors and cranked it a few times last night. I could see the oil pump chain, and I can see it spinning, so that's not the issue - b/c I had those thoughts as well.
  • It really wasn't matter of the gauge, it was the fact that it was tapping and when I spun off the filter it was dry.
  • I like the idea of taking the oil cooler lines off and pouring the oil in there ... I think I'll try that before dropping the pan.

Not sure when I'll next have to chance to address this issue, but I'll keep you updated.

BuGG - how long ago was that? Shelby's post is from Sept. 2011. I think that's around when I bought my gasket set - like Oct-Nov of 2011. I'll have to check my receipts.

Hmm. Interesting. According to my receipt I bought mine 1/7/12. Maybe I'll send Shelby a PM and see what he knows about this o-ring thing.

I think I'm going to try re-priming the pump through the port on the side of the block b/f I start tearing anything apart. In the meantime I'm going contact Coke and see he has an o-ring he'll sell me just to have in case. I've met him before, hopefully he'll hook me up :) Coke .... ?
