As far as point and shoot...I have a Sony DSC-H20 and its as good as you can get without going dslr and I love it. 10x optical zoom, 720p HD video, easy to use, not as big as a dslr, all for around $250.

Now, if you are in fact ready to spend around $800 for a camera, I've been using my aunt's Nikon D3100 and its very nice and I like it a lot, takes great pictures, more settings than I know how to use, plenty of add-ons available for future growth...

So, all in what you want. I personally like Nikon, but, Nikon and Canon both have a lot to offer. Best thing to do is seem them in person. Feel them, play with them, see what you like and what you find simpler to use.

Than you also have the question of, do you want to go with a starter DSLR or all out pro camera? All things to consider. Really, a camera shop is a very good place to go. Every time I've gone to one and talked to the people, they don't try and sell me the most expensive camera, they try and sell me the one that will fit me best.

Now, I have yet to buy a DSLR and have just been borrowing one, but, I've been browsing for a year or so...lol

a Canon is nice if you have to replace parts, its more affordable due to parts being made here in the US - vs Nikon, its more expensive

That blue car has some post processing done in photoshop it seems.

Sure it does, but no amount of post processing will yield the kind of images I'm looking for. HDR pictures can only be produced with cameras that can capture multiple images at different apertures. The software will overlay the images.

Any Nikon or Canon DSLR will do you right. (Ha, putting both names in the same sentence is treason to some.) If you're just starting out, you can get something with a kit lens, and then upgrade the lens later on.

As far as budget players go, I took some of my HDR pics, and video with a modded firmware Canon point and shoot that I got used for $60... lol...

I have a couple Olympus digital cameras that work pretty well I have one that has 100x zoom and another that is 3x zoom

The 100 x zoom is about 1999 E-100RS brand new was listed at 1500.00 I got mine for 475.00

http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/E100/E1RPICS.HTM

and the 10x zoom is from 2004 SP-350 lists for 399.00 I got mine for 179.00

http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/SP350/SP35A.HTM

The SP 350 is versatile and easer to conceal plus it uses two AA's or one lithium CR-V3 which lasts for about 2000 images

where the E-100 uses four AA'a or two CR-V3's and last for the same amount of time.

( depending on the quality of the image desired)

The E100 was touted as the fastest fps at one time it is fantastic for moving subjects but that was back in 1999 and the mega pixel strength is only 1.5 where the SP 350 is no slouch for speed either and at 8 mega pixels it has the heritage of it's older sibling.

DSLR is great good body. do you have any optics? because that would double/triple the price of the body.

I don't think point and shoot is being reviewd here. but owning both can be beneficial... point and shoot ( nikon titanium body with image stabilization 14MP... i know it is 2+ years old) is great "disposable" DSLR on a flip side would cost as much as point and shoot for professionally cleaning it!
