gabea101
I just got the error codes from my 1987 Starion. I get the 1 blink, pause, then the 3 blinks, pause, 1 blink, pause, then the 5 blinks, pause, 1 blink Im getting error codes: 1 Blink when the car was already hot2 Blinks- just a couple times though that I seen3 Blinks- constantly4 Blinks- N/A5 Blinks- constantly The code 3 is the MAS and code 5 is for the TPS. I really dont know where the MAS and TPS is. can someone tell me or upload some pics for this? Am I supposed to replace these parts or adjust something? I would appreciate any kind of response and help. My email is gabea101@roadrunner.com if you want to send me a message this way.
Alsandr
The MAS is on the intake lid, I believe, and the TPS is on the throttle body. How is your car running? Edited July 15, 2010 by Alsandr
TexasQuest
The Mass Airflow Sensor is inside the air filter assembly. The Throttle Position Sensor is on the side of the throttle body facing the front of the car.

How is your car running? Its idoling a little rough and its guttless off the line. Im I supposed to buy new sensors for these error codes? thanks
MikeMeyerhoff
Where are you? You need a local starquester to help. Just because it throws those codes doesn't mean there is anything wrong with those sensors. The codes means something is out of whack to the point the stock computer can't compensate. I'm located in Post Falls, Idaho. I just had the timing checked and it was right on. I changed most of the vacuum tubing and gave it new plugs, wires ect. What about my o2 sensor? do you think it could be that? Thanks
MikeMeyerhoff
I'd start by doing a TPS "sweep test" to make sure it doesn't have any dead spots. Then move onto a full TPS/ISC reset
mikec
The StarQuest ECU won't self-clear most error codes. Only the O2 error code, which ALWAYS shows up on a stone-cold engine startup (since the sensor is dead until it gets really hot), will self-clear. Thus once you have a TPS or MAS error code it'll remain even after you fix the original problem. The only way to clear the codes is to disconnect the power leads to the ECU - just disconnect the battery for 10 seconds or more. Do that, then drive for a day or two and see what error codes come back. Air leaks in ANY of the hoses between the air filter canister (where the MAS lives) and the engine inlet will cause MAS error codes. And horrible running too. Verify all hoses are tight, no splits/tears/leaks, hose clamps are solid, and that the MAS itself is tightly screwed to the lid of the air filter canister - and that the cork gasket is good. The lid must seal tightly to the canister body as well. TPS error code: set if the TPS output voltage (it's just a potentiometer, like a twist-knob radio/TV volume control) drops below 0.2 volts or is above 4 volts while the engine is idling. MAS error code: the airflow sensor outputs a "pulse train" that gets faster and faster (higher frequency) as more air flows into the engine. The error code is set if the frequency drops below 10 hertz while the engine idles. A StarQuest with a horribly adjusted idle control can trip both errors - TPS from a too-closed throttle, MAS from low airflow as the engine almost-stalls. The FAQ has detailed procedure for checking and setting the stuff that affects the idle on StarQuests. www.starquestgarage.com has PDF format factory service manuals for an 88 StarQuest; they'll work just fine for an 87 car. The fuel system chapter has diagrams of how to test parts and where they can be found on the engine. Don't go buy new parts just yet... buy a good multimeter and do the tests first. mike c. gabea101
I know 1 of the clamps on the air filter is missing so I will replace this somehow. Thanks for all the information.
