Well went and picked up a block from Jimmy today. A HUGE thanks goes out to him for the donation :D

Went to pullapart with a friend today and got a new shift knob (old one had overspray on it)

probably going back tomorrow to try to get a flywheel and a couple other things... (wish they woulda had a center console lid) haha

also probably going to wash the other block today and mic it up to see what pistons i'm going to need.

Today I washed the engine Jimmy gave me and noticed something weird...

On the top of the engine at the end closest to the firewall...

His block looks like this:

Whats with the differece? haha just curious

spent the rest of the day washing lots and lots of parts:

then got tired of that and decided to play around with some air tools:

Cleaned up the manifold a little...

Before:

and started to polish the timing cover:

Still have a long way to go but it should look good when i'm done haha.

Tomorrow is either machine shop or back to pullapart for a flywheel

Timing cover is looking good. Is the bore on the new block stock?

I didn't take a whole lot of measurements but the ones I took seemed to confirm that it's around 1mm smaller in diameter per cylinder than the block I have (which should be stock bore)

And, do you have a true-straight edge to compare flatness of the decks? I assume if JA kept the block around the crank journals and everything are lookin pretty nice :)

Lookin nice though, and you seem to've found a pretty nice community here Frenchi.

Pull a part it was... I went for a flywheel and came back with...

An oilpump, a crankshaft, four rods, a sensor, a clutch, a pressureplate, a transmission and oh yeah....a flywheel hahaha

when we were leaving the guy didnt even charge us for all the stuff and I got out of there pretty cheap

The crank is the stock specs and still appears to have the hardness coating on it. Only one of the main bearing journals even shows signs of wear...

I got the sensor because I needed one but the pressure plate, clutch, and transmission all came home with me because I figured...well I already put so much work into taking them off...haha

I got the rods just because I could lol I might try to polish them myself since they were pretty much free...

The donor car was an 88 durban conquest that looked very rough (I checked the trim plate in the engine) but the engine parts (aside from a rusted block where someone took the head and left it uncovered) seem to be pretty low wear..

Heres the loot:

Also...noone has an answer about the block differences?

Every Conquest I've ever had, has had the space for a VIN. Perhaps this 2.6 is an older block, like from the 70's? Yet it has holes for the oil squirters...so thats impossible. Maybe the early turbo blocks were slightly different?? IF it was a replacement block from the dealer, it would have a R stamped, in place of the VIN, or something, correct?

Dropped off my block, crank, rods and flywheel at the machine shop today.

I still have a few things to clean before I can start painting the engine parts that I have here (pulleys etc). but then its onto the assembly side of the motor stage...

Getting pretty excited to have this thing running again haha

Spent a couple hours polishing on the timing cover...

Still got a couple more to go to get it looking really nice though. Here's where it's at now:

Also arranged to get my cam ground and get a NJ head. Everything's coming along nicely.

Today I didn't work on the car too much... I polished on the timing cover a little and then moved on to the valve cover. This thing would not shine up. I messed with it for about half an hour the other day and saw next to no result so today I went at it with a different plan of attack (knowing I could just paint it if I messed up haha).

After having tested this in an inconspicuous area first, here's what I did...

First I took a sanding block and put ultra fine sand paper on it and went to town smoothing all the flat surfaces of the casting marks. Then I took the sandpaper off the block and got the hard to reach areas.

Heres what she looked like after sanding:

Then I wiped it down with a wet cloth and took the 90 grinder with the polishing wheel and shined it up:

The picture really doesnt do it justice. But I left the center section unpolished. My plan is to paint the strip down the middle black and then polish the peaks of the middle.

Tomorrow and this weekend will consist of painting all the little engine parts as well as cleaning up the engine bay in preperation for the motor install...

Oh just to note. When using the ARPs you are going to have to trim the metal flashing inside so it seats properly. Also if you get a valve cover off a caravan with a 2.6L they say Mitsubishi on them and they are less prone to leaking.

Only thing I don't like about the caravan vc is there is not a "holder" for the throttle cable.
