autotr8er2
So I was driving and shifted from 2nd to third. Engine acted like it locked up. Wouldn't turn. If I set for a sec it will turn but very laboriously. No foreign material in oil. New battery, starter checks out. Any Ideas what I'm up against? I appreciate your help. Thanks, Richard
Dad
not a lot of info to go by.. what did gauges say?
autotr8er2
gauges were reading fine. Oil pressure, temp was fine, only drove 3 miles. I was running then next thing I knew, nothing.
autotr8er2
I thought I may have lost oil pressure, but oil is present in the head. No galling. Timing chain is tight.
Cloud81918
Having spun bearings, you tend to hear then as a loud click as the bearing knocks back and for other in the small amount of space made after is spins. The rotation isn't labored. many time an engine will run for a long time before locking up. Could is be exhaust side. Perhaps a failing cat? sometime cats will break lose and rotate sideways in the body of the cat. It will really choke the engine.
ShadowTSi
There's always the possibility that an electrical connection came apart somewhere or that a ground came loose and isn't allowing all the systems to function normally. An electrical issue might explain why there doesn't seem to be anything mechanically wrong with the car, other than the slow cranking being the only symptom. Komeuppance
Use a ratchet and turn the engine over by hand. Remove the spark plugs, and try it that way too. -Robert
Dad
^^^^ Then see if it spins free with the starter enough to try a compression test. If it over heated it can seize up then turn free after it's cold again. Not saying that's what the problem is, but you need to do some inspections on it. autotr8er2
Ok, I'll try the compression test. I tried to turn the motor over by hand once, no go. The spark plugs were removed, no change. I'll also check the electrical side as well. Wires were hot, but I figured it was due to the increased torque the starter was "seeing" I appreciate all of your help guys. the previous owner spent a lot of money and time into this motor so I don't want to give up on it. Dad
If you can't turn it over by hand then forget trying a comp test. You are going to have to find out what the bind is.
Komeuppance
Doesn't sound to good if it can't be spun by hand. Like Dad said you're gonna have to inspect and test to eliminate what component is causing the problem. Remove all belts, just in case an accessory has locked up, though unlikely. Pull the valve cover and inspect, try turning the engine from the cam bolt just a bit. It sounds like its an auto transmission?? -Robert
Dad
I'd use a 7/8 socket on the crank bolt.
tsi_tom
I once saw an alternator lock up on a Toyota MR2. Try what Robert said and remove the belts. Edited April 24, 2013 by tsi_tom
Shelby
what ever you do do not try to spin the engine with starter any more until you fix problem also if a brg has spun,, that rod will have to be remove'd from the engine and resize'd and crank check'd for damage,, more or less the engine needs to come apart
TopDawg_43
Sounds like it's time for you to pull the oil pan and pull a cap or two.
