Lance_S
Anyone seeing LS1 w/ t56's in junk yards? Do they exist out of camaro/firebirds? Or do they get set aside and pulled before they even make it into the yard? Just wondering if they are available reasonably or if they straight to ebay? Thanks, L
TexasQuest
Man those are long yanked out even before an f-body gets dropped off at a junkyard.
Lance_S
yeah, figured they were. Just didn't know if it was worth dumpster diving or not.

joey_crandall
you can get lucky sometimes, ive seen oddball stuff like that in yards, the yards here get get all the good stuff picked by the local dismantlers goons though and sold for crap prices
Guest
You definately will not see those in no do it yourself junk yard. Dismantlers yes, but be ready to pony up $4000 for the swap. Hell, just the trans goes for $1600 and up.
Frenchi934
you wont find one in a junkyard. Junkyard workers look for things like that and when (rarely) a car with stuff like that gets sold to the yard, a worker will pull it during car processing. Around here the workers will go ahead and pull turbo DSM motors before they even put the car in the lot.
dmyers151
If your looking to do a swap, try looking for a Silverado with the 5.3. It's just as good in most cases and can be had for a couple days pay in my case.
Frenchi934
There is also a couple versions of the 5.3 in aluminum. Look for the L33. Its aluminum, has ls6 heads (sort of, same casting). and is not too hard to find. Came in extended cab z71 pickups from 05-07. The expensive part of the truck motor swap is that you still have to find an ls1 style t56..
yzrider
Or rock the auto trans a built 4l80e and a turbod 5.3 sounds like a rowdy set up stuffed in a sq
BOOSTED88tsi
about two months ago at a local pick n pull there was a 98 firebird complete with ls1 and t56. I think somebody said it sat for 2 days before the motor/trans were pulled. Edited April 25, 2012 by BOOSTED88tsi
87quest_stv
You'd be better off finding one of those cars used and buying the whole thing. Be cheaper probably too. I've seen whole cars being sold in various places for 2-3k.
Frenchi934
try to find a complete pullout as opposed to trying to piece one together.I got everything i need for 2150 bucks. (guy sold me all the stuff i needed except the TB and the computer, which i got for around 150 bucks). Good deals are out there. you just have to hunt instead of buying the first 3500 dollar pullout you see.
Lance_S
Thanks guys. My thoughts exactly. One which was mentioned is finding a beat up firebird or Camaro with an ls1 in it. Maybe even one with a hurt motor. If I found one with a bunch of miles on it, I would tear it down and rebuild it anyway. The other option, of course, would be to put my name out there at all the junk yards with a finders fee attached to it and see if I can get lucky. I am not ready to do the swap today. i am just beginning to do my homework. The aluminum 5.3 with a turbo or supercharger would be a ball as well. If I went auto, I would set up a paddle shifter setup, which I have looked into. Millisecond shifts would be big fun, especially on the track. TexasQuest
I would go with an iron truck block if forced induction was the plan. Particularly the 4.8L.
Fuze
Check out this episode of Extreme 4x4, they cover all LS series and cheaper variants that come in trucks that can be found in the yards. It's a great episode with a ton of info on LS type options for motors, with pricing, tips and tricks. Spike TV Exteme 4x4 LS episode
1989STAR-ESIR
Yes LSx engine are super pricey. Wish they were more affordable. If you hook the t56 up with a ballzy engine you have a sweet car. My RX7 TII has a Small Block Chevy V8 but the rear gears are 4:10 which is too low unless you 1/4mile it and thats it. The SQ is 3.54 which is freakin perfect if you have driven a 6 speed car. you will actually be able to use 6th gear and still have some low end. My old POS Z28 had 3.42 gears and with the 3.55 gears it would have been perfect!
BOOSTED88tsi
I disagree. MY car would have been way more fun with 3.90's and it really wouldn't have made that big of an impact on freeway rpms.
Fuze
Grab a copy of your local "Auto Trader: Repairables" and look for a wrecked car. If it's wadded up with a good motor/trans you may luck out on the price, just get the plasma or Sawzall ready .
TsTKl
I disagree. MY car would have been way more fun with 3.90's and it really wouldn't have made that big of an impact on freeway rpms.every tranny is different. the quest 1st gear is totally different than the t-56. thats why i got those gears from you basically im agreeing with your disagreement by explaining to him why hes wrong lol.
