Super 16g Turbo

What do I need to take into consideration when deciding if I can rebuild this.

shaft play?? that thing is floating...

New rebuild kit, new impeller, your experience mechanically speaking. providing the housing is not shot.

or

sending it off for a rebuild/estimate

It looks like something went through it rather than bad shaft play. Something BIG! Part of the accordion boot inner O-Ring perhaps?

Ask me why I guessed that <_<

As long as the housings aren't torn up (looks as though it might be alright) and if the exhaust turbine didn't take a beating, I'd say grab a new comp wheel on ebay (a good one) for about $40, have the turbine and the wheel COMPONENT balanced, get a rebuild kit, and call her done! Why do I say component balanced? Because if this ever were to happen again or the comp wheel ever touches the housing, you can get a new compressor wheel and not have to worry about getting things balanced :)

I'd say rebuild her!

That center cartridge is most likely destroyed entirely. Look at how much play that thing has. I wouldn't be surprised if the shaft is broken in half and the only thing holding the compressor wheel in is the housing and part of the bushing.

I'm betting broken turbine shaft too.

But don't give up on it yet. Take it apart first. Wheels, shafts and bearings can be replaced. It may still be repairable. I've seen worse that were rebuilt. But you won't know till you take it apart.

I had a Super 16G once from Hahn Racecraft (this was maybe 10 years ago) ... I sent it back to them to rebuild, they called me a few weeks later. It was about 100 dollars difference to just buy a new one ... so I bought a new one. If you can take it apart, as suggested above, and rebuild it yourself, that's a different story though. Rebuild kits are pretty widely available these days - esp for 16G's

I had that little inner o-ring for the accordion boot disintegrate on me one day while just cruising. DESTROYED the comp wheel.

Took it apart, swapped in a spare comp/exhaust combo with the same bearings and not a prob 6,000+ miles later at 15psi. Was just supposed to be temporary, but it works, so no need to mess with it yet.

Just because it looks that bad from the front means nothing for the rest until you tear it apart. I forsee getting a new compressor wheel (it'll be already balanced), get the turbine balanced by itself (or get a new one if the shaft is broken, which will already be component balanced), and then throw it together with a rebuild kit. Might cost you about $150-$200.
