importwarrior
i have seen pics ofa rear steering starion i believe a few years a go. i think it was onaustarion or something like that. the car was a prototype i believe. it was to be destroyedbut was somehow saved. Do you know the history of the car?
NudeLobster
Can we get a pic of the rear wheels at full steering to see how much the rear's move? -Justin
4WStarion
The history is unknown, I had someone from Mitsubishi here try to gain information but he came up empty handed. A car dealer buying stock in Japan came across this car and bought it for his mate and shipped it to New Zealand. In those days (1989) you could bring the cars in without the engine (pretending they were going to be parted) then refit the engine and get it road legal. Now days anything goes. There story is that may have been up to 5 of them but no others have surfaced as far as I know, i guess it was built around the same time others were playing with 4ws, eg: Honda Prelude, Mazda Capella/626's and Toyota and is a very early widebody. This one was owned by the same guy for 19 years before I got it, he used it every day (not what Mitsubishi intended when they built it I'm sure) but he parked it outside the whole time because he had some nice old Dodges he kept undercover. The car has covered 114,000kms and although the paint was faded it is in otherwise very good condition. I can't show photos of the wheels turning beacuse it only works at speed and I doubt they would move enough to see anyhow.
nomad
What is the control mechanism for the rear steer? I see what looks like a high pressure line so I assume it is powered off of the power steering punp. Is there a valve body or a solenoid that controls pressure to control the rear mechanism? 4WStarion
However its controlled is in the steering box as far as I know, nothing electrical involved that I've seen. I just hope it bleeds up and works again http://www.starquestclub.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif
screemin eagle
same rear suspension set up as a 1g dsm or galant vr4. everything is almost identicle.its has a rack driven from the power steering pump and a small mechanical booster pump driven from the top of the rear diff. 4WStarion
^Yes except the hubs, I want to convert to 5 lug like I have the front but am a bit scared of destroying the hub, + I don't think the 3 bolt axle flange will fit on the wheel shaft through the centre of the hub. I haven't looked closely at the Galant hubs to see if one day I could fit them. How it sits now.http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m121/KiwiStarion/018.jpg
Convette
damn thats cool man. I'd be too worried something might happen to it being so rare, I might just leave it in the garage!

Dave-O
How does it feel to know you have a car that Mitsubishi put a rack-and-pinion in the rear of, but kept a steering box up front? This is quite a rare piece indeed, the paint is looking great!
screemin eagle
you should try to get a 92-94 1g dsm rear setup in there they are 4bolt axles and barley ever break. they are also 5 lug too.

Yeah but the gearing of that diff is pathetic at best.
4WStarion
Whats this dsm stuff? same as Galant VR4 RS? They have 4 bolt axles. A LSD is a no go I think, the feeling the back steering has combined with LSD would be scary with a little traction loss, it would spin out i reckon. spoolinturbo
if u need any specs or pix of a 1g galant vr4 let me know, mines outside lol. they probably work the same.. 1.5 degrees above 25mph
screemin eagle
Yeah but the gearing of that diff is pathetic at best.what are nonsense are you talking about its the same ratio as these cars 3:54. they just dont have the options of any other ratio's. asfar as being the same as the galant vr4 rs i dont know whats in that specificly. a dsm is an eclipse talon or laser. they came 5 lug here. for the 4 bolt you would have to swap the internals over to your housing to keep the diff driven pump. lsd with 4ws isnt scary its only a problem with a locker style diff or a spool. if your still against the lsd they were available without it. if your looking for the 5 lug hubs for the rear go to www.mitsubishigraveyard.com and talk to gary he will be able to help you out.
