SWAP OPTIONS

Did you ever think about fitting the Subaru motor any more? Its an intriguing swap if you ask me and I plan on doing something eventually. If you ever measured the width of the engine bay Id like to know what you came up with.

-Chris P

our engine bay was 31.5" mid line between the two closest points. EJ25 would fit

heres a ROUGH idea, http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o249/yokomo99/wrxoption.jpg

Blue line is the area where the widest point on a EJ25 would sit

Yellow line would be the back of the engine

Red lines are where the heads would sit

you would have to move the engine back to get the trans to be placed right. actually you'd have to try and get the placement using the engine and trans bolted up at teh same time, then move it around. it is a very low center of gravity setup, be awesome for autocross or touring.

no im solid on the 1UZFE, already bought the engine lol.

and you can change the diff inside the trans of the wrx/sti trannys to make them 100% to the rear, all kinds of kits for that.

but all the guys on the wrx forums say "Buy yourself a used Firebird TransAm WS-6 if you want the RWD so much." lol

Thanks much for the pic of the engine bay w/ the dimensions of the EJ25. I think I want to do a swap with my car and I want to try something no one else has. The EJ25 is definitely something to consider. Flat 4s provide a better weight distribution and are better balanced than inline 4s. I believe most piston aircraft use flat 4s (though generally in much larger displacements). Another benefit they have for aircraft is that they can be air cooled very easily (the heads can literally stick out the sides of the plane).

Plan on throwing a FAT radiator in their?

not really. just what the 1uz asks for, its smaller than a g54b radiator. i cut the support out so i could take the engine and trany out as 1 unit. ill weld it back in after.

still in the transmission decision phase.

i donno man, thats kind of a 'leader' you get the demensions for the trans adaptor but then you gotta buy the flywheel and clutch set up from them, i bet in the end you wind up paying quite a bit for that system

Don't know if you looking but I have a stock auto 1uzfe bellhousing and howe hydraulic throwout bearing on ebay right now. Which would work with a R151 or R154 depending on which way you go, there are quite a few options floating around out there. I was going to do a similair swap but with a W58 (steel sandwich plate version) which I had lying around.

i have a 1UZ auto housing, the place tossed in a tranny for 100 bucks. im leaning tword a W58, it seems like alot less spacing and machining, plus im not going for 600 hp right away. ill use this guys adapter http://uza70.com http://uza70.com/store/catalog/images/IMG_5949.jpg

probally his flywheel and T bearing setup, which is just from summit.

but i took all the crap off the engine today, it had a cut harness on it, all the old hoses etc. i left all teh sensors in, but most of the connectors broke the tabs when i tried to unclip them. they were brittle.

well heres some pics

sorry for the pic overload. all alone in the shop, get bored with the crappy radio station.

i dont want to do motor mounts yet, until i get a tranny and adapter on.

there is PLENTY of room in the tunnel, im sure i wont have to cut anything out.

the only thing that was in the way was the Sway Bar, but it can be bolted back up into place after the engine is mounted.

What kind of plans do you have?

I know the W58(all three versions) give up the ghost in the mid 450whp/wtq area in the IS300's with boosted 2JZ's.

Going turbo? I wouldn't do anything less than an R154. Or if you're baller enough, the V160 or V161 will hold anything you want if you can swing the $4-5K multi-disk clutches. LOL

V160:

First gear: 3.830:1

Second gear: 2.360:1

Third gear: 1.680:1

Fourth gear: 1.310:1

Fifth gear: 1:1

Sixth gear: 0.790:1

V161:

First gear: 3.724:1

Second gear: 2.246:1

Third gear: 1.541:1

Fourth gear: 1.205:1

Fifth gear: 1:1

Sixth gear: 0.818:1

JP, im going to aim for a mere 350hp currently.

i figure id run a W58 now...until i build for somthing larger in the power arena.

i am planning on a twin turbo setup in the summer, but id have a long time to build parts and find a R154...im not hard enough on the drive train to need the V series. I dont think.

its somthing to think about. its all in what you can get to mate to the bell housing. who makes a adapter, flywheel etc
