Is a seized power-steering pump fixable

Well before i bought my starion FSM, i asked the local idiots at autozone if the car required any specific power steering fluid. They said no, any power steering fluid will work. WRONG! Suppose to use ATF (automatic transmission fluid). I accidentally found a thread explaining how using the wrong fluid can seize your power steering pump, which gave me the answer as to why it failed.

But i was wondering if there was a way to fix it, or does it have to be sent out and rebuilt. I dunno, i was wondering if flushing the fluid and putting all new ATF would un-freeze the pump. I do have an extra pump i got at the junkyard that spins freely. Just wondering if i could save some time and or salvage my frozen power steering pump.

And kinda off topic: is there a bolt on fuel pump for the starion besides the walbro 255? I know racetep has a bosch pump but does not list how many lph it flows.

I can't say a bout a frozen pump for sure but they're supposed to be pretty simple to rebuild with a kit. I'm sure there's some writeup on PQ stuff at trances http://starquest.i-x.net/

There are a few options for the fuel TEP would be my last choice because of price and "other considerations". Master E8000 or something along those lines. The main question about fittment is the banjo fitting for the stock fuel supply. Some kits have you cutting the line and installing barbed hoses which is not right. There's also info on pumps at trances..

I rebuilt my power steering pump, you can still get the kits from Mitsu, but if you have a good spare I'd just throw that in since you have to take the pump off to rebuild it anyway. Swap the pump, order the kit from Mitsu and rebuild it in your copious spare time.

You can usualy get a good used pump in the for sale section for about $40 (and I've seen them for less), might be cheaper than the rebuild kit, and a lot less guess work.

Well considering that i have not seen too many other pumps for this car i may be willing to cough up the cash for the Bosch at TEP. Bolt on is exactly what Im looking for, no hacking up stock lines in place of barbs for me. I dont have very big goals for my starion and I'am still learning about it. If i can get away without using an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator that would be great. I willl however keep doing more research on the pumps and checkout this Master E8000. I just like to be assured by other peoples personal experience. Thanks

Have you ever purchased parts from TEP??? Or are you going on what others have said about them?? Hey, I bought my Walbro 392 fuel pump from http://www.importpoweronline.com I got a good price on it. That was four years ago. Don't believe everything you read on this site. Here's another good site to buy the Walbro: http://apeusa.com Edde, If you have never done business with Top End Performance....STFU..... I have. http://apeusa.com Has the Walbro and the fittings you will need. In doubt???? Call them, and ask for Ron Gregory.

Wow thanks edde and caliber308. Do you guys know of a fuel pump that i might be able to use without the use of an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator. such as a smaller walbro or a different bosch. Or even the flow numbers of that bosch. Thats my main goal, cause i dont have big plans for the starion. For example my 98 GST i could upgrade to a walbro 190lph without the use of an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator. I did check out that E8002 pump but still dont know if an aftermarket FPR is required with that.

UPDATE ON POWER-STEERING PUMP!!

damn, first time i got under the car to actually look at the pump. Turns out that one bolt was missing. (The one holding the pump to the bracket). And one of the bolts used as the tensioner bolt (the one that allows it to swivel to give slack to put the belt on) was loose and backed itself out and caused the pulley to jam up against it and stopping it from rotating. So the pulley indeed now spins freely. I will try to flush out the old power steering fluid and put in new ATF fluid. Buy a belt to put on and finally enjoy relaxing my forearms. lol.

Ill try to update if the pump actually works.

You don't have to upgrade the FPR if you choose not to. The reason some of us do it is for a upgraded turbo, above stock boost levels and larger injectors. But none the less, I would contact Ron at www.apeusa.com for the best fuel pump and installation advice on what your wanting to do.
