MikeMeyerhoff
Here's what my 88's previous owner did... Â > http://mypants.org/Mike/ConquestTSI/ant.jpg What are people doing about thier broken power antennas? Â Its hard to find a good power one, and probably getting harder as time goes by. Â I'd like to do something that would make it look like a clean stock setup. Â It doesn't need to be retractable. Â Has anyone moved it upfront to the fenders? This might be one of those good oppertunities to go walk the U-Pull yard... Hmmm mm
MCN1969
I went for a Bee Sting type, Looks good, but I am not sure how you would fill the hole and remove the bulge on your spoiler where the stock antenna mounts. I have just a single peice rear spoiler, so just filled the hole the same as any body hole! http://mysite.freeserve.com/UKStarionGallery/Antenna.jpg The antenna was bought from a local auto factors, and cost just £15 ($25) A fair bit less than Mitsi would want for a new power antenna! Burton
I love that antenna martin. I would go that route. Then pul all the old antenna out and fill the hole with fiberglass then bondo etc...
MCN1969
I love that antenna martin. I would go that route. Then pul all the old antenna out and fill the hole with fiberglass then bondo etc... I think they look a lot better than stock. Trouble with fiberglass and bondo, is that the rear spoiler is flexible, so this might crack at a later date, Maybe you could fill with silicone or something similar! But I am not sure about how to go about finishing the surface! Someone may have some ideas about this. Like I said, I didn't have to worry about this, as I just have a single peice rear spoiler and the stock antenna was through the body in the same location. I just removed it, welded a small plate in the hole, and finished with bondo Martin.
emann420
I've had fair to good luck with these. Just mount it inside on the windshield behind the rear view mirror. http://metraonline.com/product.aspx?sku=44-ua20 E-mann
Burton
yeah, start with silicone, lket cure then lightly top w/ fiberglass and bondo. The only way it will crack is if something is dropped on it. In which case it will be cracked anyway.
shift1313
i like that emann. i actually have a power antenna unit that worked but someone bent the antenna:( it suckes. right now i have it removed and a bolt coming up throught the bottom so i dont get water inside(its also under a car cover) but i would like to use that internal one. would it work just as well to mount it on the rear window?
emann420
Burton - Yes it will work on any of the rear windows as long as it is not on or near a defroster line. Personally, like I said, I like them behind the rearview mirror because of the shorter antenna cable and accesory wire. ;D With this mod you should be able to fill that lousy power antenna hole on the spoiler! UlrichWolf
I Monster Garaged my antenna. I took a 1983 Nissan Maxima power antenna, disassembled it and put the Mitusbishi mounting tube on the Nissan antenna and body, and then chopped the motor off, and left the gearing. So now, I have a manual power antenna that looks factory, and picks up great. Cost? Freebie, zip, nada, nothing........ Tim
MyRed88TSI
For you guys that have the original broken masted antenna's here is an idea. I havent tried to do this so maybe someone can try this. If you go to autozone and look in the antenna section they have one for a chrysler. it looks like a factory antenna mast and cord. So we need a guinea pig to do this and report how it works. ;D
UltimateLurker
I'm doing the same thing with mine that Pearlquest did with his...getting rid of it. I won't be replacing it either, I don't do radio's in weekend ¼-Mile Kings ;D. If I did, I'd do one like E-Mann's.
Josh '88
I plan on shaving my spoiler wing where the OEM antenna mounts, but what kind of body filler is recommended? Pearlquest, do you remember what kind of filler was used on your Quest? UL, I assume you're going to shave your antenna when you paint your Quest in the near future. What kind of filler are you going to use? Josh
penick000
Lot of you guys are talking elimination of the factory unit, but for those who want to keep the stock one you can do that fairly cheap as well. Ordered my OEM antenna mast from Tallahassee Mitsu for 28.89 part number mb541310. pen
Morphing89TSI
There is another post on antennas that addresses this. The rubber one in that location looks OK. But, I would much rather do what pearl quest has done and shave them off (please let us know how you did it!). I would also be interested in either an antenna from a euro car in the middle. my 2 cents. Morphing 89 TSI Geoff
artinist
well at first i got rid of the power antenna and replaced it with this stationary one. it was better than stock but then i wanted to get one of those roof mount ones. so i have taken off the mast for now until i get it filled before the car is painted. i am going take it to those guys that repair front spoilers. they have a flexible bondo they use that will work great for this purpose. i think they sell these at auto paint stores too. the roof mounts are avilable from ebay for about $30. make sure they are amplified. the way I installed mine was, I removed the stupid rear wiper spray and using a square file, made the hole square and slightly larger to fit the antenna through. i got the square looking one becuae it goes better with the lines of the car. but these two are availble on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...;category=38655 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...;category=33639 http://home.earthlink.net/~artinist/images/antenna/manual1.jpg http://home.earthlink.net/~artinist/images/antenna/manual02.jpg http://home.earthlink.net/~artinist/images/antenna/roofmount.jpg
emann420
Hey Art Does the antenna hit the glass when the hatch is open? If not how long is the antenna? E-mann
artinist
the mast is about 6" and it does not hit the glass. its flexible so nothing would happen anyway.
Lizzord30
I like the manualy retractalbe 83 anntan Can put it out or down with just opening the window ;D http://t-racing.com/Image%20file/Starion/DSC00158.JPG
Morphing89TSI
The other idea that I really like is from Autoloc. They now have a kit that you can install that doesn't even have an antenna. OK, it's an interior antenna. So, shave it all off ... and still have your radio. AS long as u got a good motor its not too bad. I added a switch to mine so I can keep it off (retracted) I still get good reception in the city and I get to put it down when I want. MANGO
I noticed that both the interior pad style antenna and the fuba betaflex style that's on the hood have 2 connections, one obviously is the RCA type input jack that plugs to the back of the head unit, what about that smaller wire, where does it go? MANGO
emann420
Mango, the larger connector is the standard antenna plug. The other smaller wire if it has a similar connector is for diversity antenna radios. If the smaller wire is just a wire with no connector on it the it is most likely an amplified antenna that needs a 12V+ accesory signal for maximum gain. 88conqCS
how can I install my e-bay conquest antenna if it doesn't retract completely? Would someone tell me if the factory antennas are round or flat at the top of the antenna mast. or do they come both ways? my e-bay conquest antenna purchase is turning out poorly. The antenna does not extend and retract consistantly. With out it completly retracting I cannot get it through the opening in the cargo area. any recommendation would be appreicated.
