Impossible to know, but more than probably it was a service manager, service writer, or mechanic, because they were the ones that knew that the Starion and Conquest were in fact, the same car (and had no need to hide that fact). Back in 1982, Mitsubishi only had 70 dealers nationwide, and in a sparce 22 states, so they made a deal with C/P/D (Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge) dealers to provide warranty and service work to Starion's/Cordia's/Tredia's if they happen to show up in the dealership (common in those days, impossible today). Back then, Japanese cars weren't as respected as they are today, so C/P/D salespeople wanted to sweep the badge-engineered part of the Conquest under the table, so you would have never heard them use the phrase. Also, information about who actually produced the car was much harder to come by, so many Conquest owners thought that the car was in fact a C/P/D product. However, the mechanic's knew the truth, and used the phrase "Starquest" frequently. I have it on good authority that the phrase was being used as early as 1984, but I personally first heard it in 1988...from a Chrysler mechanic.

  3. It's Balt Blue, not Baltic Blue, and the big deal with it is the rarity. X68 is Obsidian Metallic, and appeared on the 1986 Starion.
  4. Mitsubishi had absolutely nothing to do with these wheels as factory accessories, or factory dealer-installed options. Any Mitsu/Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge dealer selling these did so of their own volition. The reason you see so many of the same wheels on the SQ is because there were only a handful of wheels that would fit the car; Borbet, Enkei, Ronal, etc.

  6. Grazel, at the very least, stop calling Balt Blue "Baltic", and change your sig while you're at it. All Starion color names were derived from places, not bodies of water; ie San Marino, Rio, Fiji, Seychelles, Durban, etc. The fact that Balt is blue and not red is likely no coincidence, but the color itself is named after the place, not the sea. Nice acquisition.

  13. Excluding one-off's and test-platforms, the '89 ESiR in R48 + tan cloth straight-line interior is the rarest color combo, only 2 were made; one for the US and one for Japan. No package information is given, as Mitsubishi didn't keep such records. I have a picture of the one in Japan, but the US model faded into oblivion. The rarest production model award would go to the '88 ESi widebody. Yes, it exists, though I don't have production numbers on it, as again, Mitsubishi didn't keep such records.

  16. While doing research for my Starion/Conquest Black Book I became good friends with Jennea Lee, the head of Import Operations at Mitsubishi.
  17. Japan, in fact, did get L05 (Olive Gray), in the 1986 MY. However, Fiji Blue (T87), San Marino Yellow (Y59), and Durban Maroon (R88) came directly from the marketing brass at Chrysler, as they thought that Mitsubishi's color line-up was "bland". The inspiration for these 3 colors came from Chevrolet's Camaro IROC-Z.

  22. Heavy shift knobs do, in fact, make shifting easier, but I hardly think Mitsubishi designed it that way. The simple fact is that everything on these cars is heavy, I mean, have you had the glovebox lid off?
