03CL55AMG
So my main brak lights are not working...only the smaller one on the hatch, I have checked the bulbs and the fuses..both are good. I even changed the brake light switch, stll no main brake lights, not sur if this is related but when cruising the other night with the cruise control on..the cruise would kick off for know reason, I would just hit resume and it would be good to go, but it did that 3 times. Anyway not sure what else to check on the brake light issue...any ideas would be appreciated, thanks.
nightwalkerancestery
Have you taken off the gauge hood recently? - Charles

scott87star
Align the hatch and clean the contacts on the hatch struts.
Starfighterpilot
Check out FSM Page 8 -188. It may be that the hazard switch may be going to Starquest heaven. Or that the #2 fuse retainer "clips" in the fuse block under the drivers side dash are loose or corroded. See FSM 8-103. #2 fuse powers the stop light and cruise control circuits. I don't think that the problem has anything to do with grounds. Cuz if the grounds were bad, the tail lites wouldn't lite up and he didn't say that they were not working. In the OP - he was specific in saying the brake lites were the problem. But WTH - I may be wrong. For What It's Worth. KEN
03CL55AMG
I will try that star...I did notice that the small hatch brake light will not work unless the hatch is closed, so that made me think along those same lines, thanks. Starfighterpilot
I did notice that the small hatch brake light will not work unless the hatch is closed, That's what's supposed to happen cuz it's powered and grounded through the left hand rear hatch strut electrical copper connecters/contacts. nightwalkerancestery
Do they work if you turn on the hazard switch? - Charles
03CL55AMG
Yes the rear lights do work when the hazzards are on...hmmm. I am dbl checking the contacts
scott87star
Power for the brake lights flows through the hazard switch when its in the off position. Power for the hazards flows through when the hazard switch is in the on position. Have you cleaned the contacts in the hazard switch?
03CL55AMG
Well, I guess thst will be the next step...I did not know that the power ran through the hazard switch...so I will clean them next. I did pull the hood off and pull apart all the switches but it has been awhile since I did that..thanks
nightwalkerancestery
That was going to be my suggestion as well. I had my gauge hood off in the past and put it back together and everything worked like usual...for a while. Then one day my brake lights suddenly stopped working. Wth?! After going through some posts on here, I found that if the hazards work but the brake lights don't, it's usually just the connector under the hood. It turned out that I didn't fully seat the connector and over time it wiggled itself apart until the contacts weren't touching for the brakes. Though it'd still be good to disassemble and clean the contacts for the hazards, it's possible to get away with just reseating the connector. Since your hazards do work, I can say it's most likely going to just be the connector for the hazard switch assembly or the actual switch itself. Let us know what you find out. - Charles
