techboy Posted March 29 Author Report Share Posted March 29 With the badge relocation complete, it's time to get the grill installed on the front of the car. You can see the grill with the badge now installed sitting on the garage floor. These grills are pretty easy to install. Theirs a couple of screws on each end and some clip-in tabs. techboy Posted March 29 Author Report Share Posted March 29 It's almost time to back this car out of the garage for the very first time (complete, that is) and reveal it to the world. There's just one last little detail to install - that's the rear trunk badge. With the badge from the rear trunk deck now installed on the front of the car I wanted to come up with something for the back. I've always loved the very 80's boxy CONQUEST letters across the back of the TSi's, so I thought it might be fun to pay homage to that design on the Starion. I had a graphic art shop near me make a STARION ESi-R decal for the trunk deck. I always get a little nervous installing something like this because you only get one shot to get it right - and if you screw up all that $$ is down the drain. 🥲 I used a tape measure and some painters tape to mark everything out and center it and then installed. techboy Posted March 29 Author Report Share Posted March 29 After what has felt 6 very long years, I'm finally ready to unveil this car, and just in time for my own car show this weekend. This project was supposed to just be a simple pull the motor from my Conquest and drop it in the Starion and then have the car repainted in the original white ... but then the tree crushed it and it turned into a much much larger undertaking. But I couldn't be happier with the results and everything I've learned along the way and all the help from many individuals in this community who came through with parts and/or advice and help. A few weeks back, curiosity got the better of me and I had to know whether or not everything was solid, and I actually took the car for a mini-test drive in my neighborhood. My wife recorded a video of that: YOU TUBE VIDEO RAOD TEST Because I had taken this car for a little neighborhood test spin already, and the fact that I pulled this motor from my Conquest, which I was actively driving at the time, I was pretty confident that I could take the car out on the road - so I drove to the gas station and filled her up. techboy Posted April 20 Author Report Share Posted April 20 Because everything was coming down to the wire before the show, I didn't have time to finish putting the trunk area back together. I just put the cargo cover on for the car show and hid everything. B/c the car was white, and is now blue, I wanted to take a moment and repaint the trunk area in black. So I grabbed a can of paint and brushed the lower spare tire area in black. Took all the support pieces out and cleaned them up with the wire wheel. Then I hit them up with some fresh black spray paint. After letting it all dry, I simply started putting everything back together. First the metal support structures. Then the carpet pieces. Set the spare tire back in place. Trunk cover. And the final carpet piece. Not hard work, but I'm really happy with how it came out and how it looks. techboy Posted April 20 Author Report Share Posted April 20 I built a motor for a different car years ago with forged pistons and rods that constantly had oil pressure problems. B/c of that I'm a bit paranoid about oil pressures and I tend to watch them like a hawk. So far, everything seems to be good with this engine build. Idle at start up is about 60lbs. techboy Posted April 20 Author Report Share Posted April 20 If you watched my Youtube test drive video from several posts back during the restoration you might have notice there's a piece that falls of the car when I'm driving. Luckily it didn't do any damage to my paint, but it was the top windshield trim. It got mangled in the fall. Appearantly the upper windshield clips are broken and not holding. So I had to track down a new one. pcristquester hoooked me up and did a great job shipping it safely cross country., I need to track down some windshield clips and get this installed. NikoFab is putting together an SQC calendar for 2017 and asked if I'd be apart of it. So, I spend some time online searching for a local photographer that shoots cars, not just a wedding photographer. I actually found someone and we met up and did a shot at a local state park. I just trimmed mine with a pair of scissors to clean it up a bit. It was torn and rough around the edges. There are aftermarket adhesive type under insulation you can buy from places like Summit or Jegs that many guys use. I've never personally purchased any of those products myself. However I have researched them and considered it. You definitely want something there. My first Quest ever was white and the hood paint had turned yellow-ish were the turbo was b/c the previous owner removed the insulation and all shielding.
