TeeWX
Not sure if this goes here. I am new and interested in getting a conquest/starion for a project. I currently have a '90 Eagle Talon TSi AWD I have been playing with and i've owned a few in the past as well. I am now looking for a RWD project car. My first question was how good is the factory G54B (i think) engine at making power? Can you do 400whp pretty easily? OR is it a much better idea to swap in a 4g63t if you want that kind of power? Thanks, let me know what you guys think.

TexasQuest
To make 400 hp with the G54B you'll need to do a MPI swap. The factory 2 injector TBI setup is good to around 300ish.

I mean youtube is cool and all if you want to be entertained but I don't see how youtube will tell me the limits of the factory mill.

dmyers151
400whp is doable on the 2.6, been done several times. Not extremely easy, but straightforward for the most part. If a 4g swap is your thing though, you'll wanna try and find a 2.4 wideblock from an older Mitsu/Dodge pickup. It bolts in and up to the stock trans.See here:4g swap parts
TexasQuest
400 bhp. The best tuning options for the G54B is a 3 or 3.5 inch GM MAF and a MAF Translator. I'm sure your familiar with those since you said you've been into DSM's awhile.
Indiana
I don't know what your purpose would be for such high power levels but if you had 250 most would piss their pants most times and its in no way comparable to a 400hp FWD car. AWD perhaps but it take high power to launch an AWD car. If you hit 300, and you can get that on a stock motor and throttlebody you would be very happy. conquest707
the g54b has a crazy torque curve compared to like.. any other engine. keep that in mind toohttp://www.starquestclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=8890 heres the dyno thread

Search on keyword "Conquest" or "Starion" and you will see many of these cars that can answer your question.
psu_Crash
I'm with Dmyers If you already know the DSM world then a 4G64 swap would be right up your alley. That said I would really miss the torque of the G54B. I have drove a few 350HP DSM and my car as it sits is way more fun. No idea what kind of power I put down but over easily over 300 I'm sure. If you want serious power then converting to a multi-port intake is the only option to do it safely and consistently. Do some reading through the MPI forum and the Engine Mod forum. I think you'll find your answers there.
