Drwojo
My dream car is simply a starion with a straight body and some really nice paint. I decided that I am going to repair and repaint my car. I was simply opening a can of worms. Some of the people on this board do absolutely amazing work. I am trying to get this done right. The underside of my 87 is very clean. It did have some blemishes. Now owning my own home it is nice to have a place to work on it and store tools. IT has been negative cashflow and lots of late nights but is coming along. Some very necessary tools I have purchased. Along with necessary materials.Kerosene/Diesel space heater 250Snap on mig welder 100Spray gun 60Cut off wheel 20Grinder 40Grinding discs 10Body filler 202K Primer 100BMW Alpine White base 115Clear coat 170Sanding blocks 30Sanding paper (80-800) 55DA 70 Here are a few pics of what I have done so far. I painted the sides of the spoiler and rocker covers this evening and another coat on the fender. Will try to work on it and update as much as possible. pc85
Next I began to fill the spoiler using SEM backing panel glue and problem plastic repair Great idea with the spoiler/wiper blade, I'll be filling mine in as well. Good luck, it'll be worth it when its all done.
Drwojo
http://semproducts.com/Catalog.asp?prod=245 http://semproducts.com/Catalog.asp?prod=88 Really good stuff. It takes about 1 of each. Lay down the glue first then layer over with the problem plastic repair. Sand with some 36 grit first for a good bite. It does smell like death when sanding it. Here are some more pics or the spoiler and the DS quarter repair.http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/restoration/DSC02726.jpghttp://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/restoration/DSC02727.jpghttp://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/restoration/DSC02455.jpghttp://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/restoration/DSC02454.jpg
Drwojo
Cleaned the garage. Pulled the car in and did some more work. My brother got me a really nice standing work light for x-mas. Removed the rear windshield pisser (with a hammer) and filled the hole. Got plenty of sanding done on the rocker covers and header panel. Everything is finally straight. I look like that kid from charlie brown with all the filler dust coming off of me. Spoilers are coming along nicely. One is done and the other needs a little more work. Also got almost all of the rock chips out of the nose of the car. Getting pretty excited. Drwojo
Thanks for the good remarks guys. I cut off the quarter patch and re trimmed everything. Re welded it into place and started to grind it yesterday. I probably did 25 welds before getting really annoyed and realized I had shut off my gas when i left the garage for a minute. Will post up some update pics in a little while.
Drwojo
Well I made a friend at an autocross a while back and he hooked me up with a set of brand new 18's off of a 09 eclipse. They were FREE!!!! I am considering using. I like them but am going to need spacers. Somewhere around another 200 give or take. Also If the car is white I was thinking of painting them gold. Give it a little more modern look. Almost like an STi or something.http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/100_0412.jpg http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/100_0419.jpg http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/100_0425.jpg I put the jack under the wheel and lifted it to see how it would look like on the ground. They barely hit the strut with out a space but nonetheless I cannot put them on. Let me know what you guys think of them.
BOOSTED88tsi
i think they look good, get a nice big spacer on there and it should look super nice.
D_Venable
they look pretty good, they might look a bit goofy on the back, but I get that about my Sparcos, so I say go for it. Only thing, you might want/need smaller diameter tires as on harder bumps those might hit the inner fender liner, I've had the 235/40R18 on the front of my car hit, and I'm BARELY lowered (3/4-1"), and have 8kg springs up front
logikfive
Those wheels look nice! Car is coming along!
Drwojo
Well I pulled the door cards to get to the handles and lock cylinders. Locks are out but cant seem to get the handles if anyone knows how. I find little bits of rust and am beginning to feel overwhelmed. I pulled all the rear tailights and what not. Fogs lights. I am really getting there but wish I had a nice rust free roller to swap all my s*** into. I think this may just get repaired and be my drift car. I am going to look for another one that is CLEAN. Either way I will keep fixing this one. Wish me luck.
phishfud
Just did a handle last night. Once the two 10mm nuts are off, the long rod from the latch mechanism just pops off, but it's a muther to do. I ended up removing the 3 screws holding the door latch, and the 10mm olt below it that hold the door lock actuator. It gave me enough wiggle room to allow the door handle to come off the door, and get the long rod out through the door handle hole. Gave me a better persepctive and room to pry a bit. Gotta be gentle or the clip it pops into will break. hope that helps.
Drwojo
Thanks. I began to take those screws out but my driver is too small and sorta out rounded the screws. Need a bigger screwdriver.
rayfinkle5
Next I began to fill the spoiler using SEM backing panel glue and problem plastic repair Emptyhttp://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/restoration/DSC02572.jpg Fullhttp://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/restoration/DSC02583.jpg I did block sand it and add a very thin layer of filler. I would like more details about the wiper delete. What did you plug the back side with? What else needed to be done. I did a search for "wiper delete" last night and came up with nothing. This morning I viewed your thread and what did I find...?
Drwojo
I sanded it really well then used the SEM products with tape on the underside until it dried. I started with SEM backer panel glue then SEM Problem plastci repair over that. After blocking all of it I used a thin layer of filler. Drwojo
Little update. Got the quarter almost completley smooth. There is still a dent needed to be fixed and other small parts were filled as well. It is almost entirely stripped but I cant get the door handles off and do not want to break them.http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/restoration/DSC00057.jpghttp://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/restoration/DSC00053.jpg All bare metal was sprayed with a self etching primer. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/restoration/DSC00043.jpg http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/restoration/DSC00038.jpg http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/restoration/DSC00040.jpg http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/restoration/DSC00041.jpg And now it is warm enough to paint outside. I will hopefully have it primed soon. Already have all the paint and tape. Need to stop and purchase some masking paper. Bought a standalone so MPI may get in the way of bodywork. Thanks for the good feedback.
Drwojo
Well pulled all the under hood insulation. Used a TON of wax and grease remover to clean all the oil over spray off of the hood. Sanded everything with 400 then cleaned again with wax and grease remover. When was the last time you saw these???http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/100_0656.jpghttp://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/100_0655.jpg Also trimmed the insulation piece so there are no ratty edges covered in oil. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/0330002031.jpg http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/0330002033.jpg Primed the under side of the hood with 3 good coats of high build primer. 12 ounces was a little too much so I went and hit the front bumper with 1 coat and a little extra on the spots that were sanded through. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/100_0659.jpg http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/100_0658.jpg She is coming along. now need to finish both quarters and remove the door handles (still). Anyways back to the garage!
Drwojo
Have not been working on this as much as I would like to. Started hockey and have been working on other peoples cars more than mine cough JOHNS cough GIRLFRIEND cough. Anyways. Sprayed base and clear today after work. Only did 2 coats of white. Could probably have gone with 3 but it is the underside of the hood and as long as it matches the rest of the car.http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/100_0664.jpg Removed the bump in the spoiler from the antenna and filled in the hole as well. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/100_0669.jpghttp://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/100_0667.jpghttp://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/100_0666.jpg And if anyone finds it necessary to ask again what to use to fill in the spoiler here is a pic http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/food28/100_0668.jpg It is a bumper repair and has flexability like the plastic in our spoilers. It takes a few minutes to set and lays out fairly easliy. It takes 10-20 minutes to cure wait like 30 min before sanding. Still looking for a rust free drivers fender or lower fender half. Next is to finish the body work and make the quarters nice and straight and to fill in the lock cylinder hole on the gas cap door. Then I should be able to spray the whole thing. Drwojo
On a positive note John (idriftjunk) sandblasted my fender with rust and drew up a very nice new lower piece. Cut it out and bent tabs accordingly. Better than OEM, no big deal. Gonna weld it on tonight. Also got the gas cap door all smoothed out and finishing the spoiler antenna hole/bump removal. Painting the hood and probably both fenders if I feel up to it this evening. Also think I may remove the doors to paint the sills and insides of the frame. Will have some pics up soon.
