Wizard
On my 88 conquest there is a switch in the manual and seen it when you depress the clutch the little plunger comes out of the switch and has a wire connector hooked up to the back side of this switch. What purpose does the clutch switch serve? Wizard

Indiana
turns the cruise control off so the engine doesn't rev up uncontrolled, but if its on and you push the car into neutral without depressiing the clutch or brake pedal it will rev up uncontrolled. Its also very useful for a launch control cancel. Depress the clutch to launch and let your low rev limitor activate and when the clutch pedal is back to the top it deactivates at least that's what we are using it for and the cruise can still be deactivated from the brake pedal. There is one thing to be aware of about this switch and whether or not your cruise control works, or using it to deactivate the rev limitor as I described and that is there is a nylon type bumper that is stuck into a hole in the clutch pedal. If that bumper falls off or is missing already your cruise will not work because it thinks you have the clutch pedal depressed. Its hard now being as old as it is and just by chance Mitsubishi made that little switch with a plunger that is the small enough in diameter to go right through that hole in the pedal if that bumper falls off. Does your clutch pedal seem to be up far too high compared to the brake pedal? If it is, its likely that this bumper has fallen out and that will let it come up about 1/4" higher and your cruise will not work. Get a new bumper or put a hard stop in the hole like a bolt or perhaps a flat head nylon bolt and put a nut on the back side.
Shelby
on 5 spd cars both the clutch and the brake have a cancel cruise swt on them,, simple swt, close'd when petal is up qnd open if the clutch or brake is move'd this is so the engine will not race if you have cruise set and depress the clutch , same wire goes to both petals the cruise will not operate if eather swt is open
Laodicea
Yeeeeeaaahhh I just wanted to say I figured out why my cruise control has not worked since I had this car for over 4 years. I put one of those black nylon panel hold push thingys in there like the ones that hold down the carpeted cardboard interior in the hatch and now my cruise works.......all cause that switch would slip right in the hole. turns the cruise control off so the engine doesn't rev up uncontrolled, but if its on and you push the car into neutral without depressiing the clutch or brake pedal it will rev up uncontrolled. Zack_Morris
doesn't it keep the engine from starting unless the clutch is depressed as well?
mikec
88-earlier cars will start without pressing the clutch pedal. I've heard the 89s do have that safety interlock. Or maybe it's the Conquest versions only - there are a few minor wiring differences between Starions and Conquests. My 88 does not require a clutch push to start; I'm the original owner of that car so I know what has and has not been modded... the clutch switch is bone-stock on my car. mike c. vbrad511
When I converted my 88 auto into a 5 speed I did a bit of creative wiring and adapted an extra brake switch to use on the clutch pedal and function as a neutral safety and a cruise cancel. I've had 2 86's an 87, 2 88's and none of them had the safety on them.
