g54 vs 4g63

Recommended Posts

Back in my dsm days I spent a lot of money trying to keep mine going. What I'm getting at is if you decide on going with the 4g63 make sure you build it right the first time with quality parts that work well together. Otherwise your car will be on jack stands more than it ever has before. I know this doesn't help your decision a whole lot but something to keep in mind. Good luck!

i dont see any 63 head, deck or gasket problems like the 54.

Zero cylinder blocks splitting either

almost every dead 63 I've come accross was neglected timing belts and tensioner. Extremely common. Don't blame the motor

Both my DSMs ran perfect, purchased at 170+ and 190+k miles. Everything "looked" 100% virgin underhood. 54s ?

No need to dump $$$$ on any mpi 'conversion'..... or clowns drooling over a dohc version

A member posted a while back, hit 560+ atw with an untouched junkyard $30 hyundai head(same as dsm)

Cams that actually 'work' instead of this 54 hit or miss stuff

Plenty dsm dynos without the 54 characteristic tq nosedive. Recipees for monsters available

Several tuning options

Ton of info on austarion forum, with numerous paths to 63 dohc detailed

A versatile motor, without the penalties. Mitsu/starion roots, is the cherry on top

U can still boast that u have a "real" starquest :D

I love the 4G63. They're actually great engines and as long as you keep up on the maintenance, like everything else, they last. I purchased my last Talon with 92,000 miles and drove it until 192,000 before selling it without a single issue. Preventative maintenance is key with these engines like the timing belt every 60k. It's also helpful to do a balance shaft delete.

Stock internals are also good for up to 400hp and with the option of DSMLink (ECMLink) as a tuning device, there's no reason for a engine to grenade. Once I get my cable to hook up dsmlink I should be pushing 380 hp safely on all stock engine minus the bolt on mods.

hmmm..... dunno, man

63 swap can b done for less than a 54/mpi, depending on the route u choose and your skill level

Last dsm I paid $500 for a fwd laser complete, as a donor. Solid drivetrain, but had non-turbo ecu(owner's mistake)

Wanna stick with a starion gbox ? http://forums.austarion.com/viewtopic.php?t=10602

Some rwd run the dsm/vr4 oe exhaust manifold

Going w58, r154, or custom header, etc... will cost the same wheather 54 or 63

DSMs gone past 400hp/400tq stock block, stock head, stock cams

Its funny when people put together anti 2.6 comparisons. They price the other engine like its gonna come perfect and drop in ready at used cost, then all 2.6 stuff is brand new this, brand new that.

$2200 for a complete MPI 2.6..... Why not stay with stock trans? Empty hp requirement says nothing toward how it will be used. Why would a 2.6 need a header? $70 in mods of mine (new parts) and it did 400hp without issue.

A unknown mileage 4g63 should get a new timing belt. Especially if you want to make power and daily it. Most will do it wrong and bend valves and chip pistons.

header mentioned because that link chose to use one..... ditto the oe starion gbox

Again, some swaps do use oe dsm manifolds, and we know what kinda power they're capable of

and yes, the majority of 63s, JZs, LS, etc do come "drop-in ready"

Would be silly 2 not put a fresh belt and tensioner on an 'unknown' 63, but u r right.... some still won't

Hey FunkyPhil what did you do to get 400hp? Not bashing, just wondering because I'd like to get that out of my 2.6 if I'm already knocking on that door!
