MR2 Strut insert conversion (with airbags)

Recommended Posts

no, I really just nee to have the welded up, and I'm about done with them though.

haven't really been motivated to finish them without a car to put them on near

I hope to get them welded up before Nats though

Man after putting my front suspension back together and seeing the amount of strut travel I have with the coilovers I am definitly going this route next. I often contemplated it but its great to see it in real life. Sleaving the weld will work out perfectly with taking up the gap the coilover has too. Its almost to good to be true lol. I'm going to have to start keeping my eye out for some MR2 adjustables.

Now the question is should I modily flatty front spindes to gain the camber at the same time?

I was reading that, but where did you get the "perch rings" from? Also, with the way the housing is modified, do you think you will have clearance with the wheel/tire mounted?

ok, you were a little vague the first time

I just had some mild steel rings cut. They were scrap the guy had and he just quickly cut them for me

1/4" thick, about a 2.84" OD and a little under 2.14" ID

the ID was cut small so that I could grind them out to fit perfect

Yes, the spring will be sitting where it will interfere with WIDE wheels and tires, BUT it still won't be out as far as the stock perch. So offset choice will be critical.

Might have a change on the springs, hehe

I've always wanted to do airbags on a quest, and seeing Dave's car at nat's, sealed the deal, so I bought one to check clearances with, hehe

Andrew, I need to borrow your car again, haha

took a couple rough measurements, (got bored) of the height length I have to work with with the MR2 inserts at full expansion.

From where I was going to place the "perch" for the coilover sleeve, I have 13" to the bottom of the camber plate (mounted). since it's gonna be the same inserts front and rear, the measurements are the same for the front as the back.

the bags, fully inflated are only 9.25", so I've got some room to work with, now to find the right length for the ride height I want fully inflated, then I can drop it 5.25" from there, since the compressed length of the bag is 4", hehe

I CAN'T WAIT, hehe

Those bags look thick! Hows the tire/wheel clearance looking?

I don't know yet, lol. It's why I only bought one, and why I need Technology's car, or at least on of his front wheels and measurements fro the rear, haha.

I'm not to concerned with my 18's (might sell them) but if I can clear SHP wheels, on 15mm spacers, I'll be happy

did some fitment tests tonight, with the help of Andrew (Thanks again)

I might end up about an inch higher than I'd like to be as for fully inflated ride height, BUTI can knock it down an inch or 2 from where Dave currently is, I think, but that might become a moot point with front camber plates.

here's a few pics, it late, so I don't feel like going through all the measurements just yet, so here's the eye candy.

Now after this we test fit my 15mm spacers, on one front wheel, but they didn't seat all the way, because of the stock sud length, so there was a 7mm gap from the spacer to the wheel, or equivalent to a 22mm spacer.

Now this is a front SHP 8", so it has a 18mm offset, and a 225/50 tire

the tire pokes JUST barely to the outside of the fender, and Andrew plans to eventually get 215/50/16's for the front of his car, and will probably run 20mm spacers, which means he needs to trim 2-5mm off the stock studs, I plan to stick with the 225/50 for now (if I put the stock wheels back on, and sell the 18's) and run 15mm spacers all around, maybe 20mm on the rear 9's, we'll see.

took the 2 front struts in to work, and cut the studs down 10mm

The "long" one has the cut off piece sitting on top, to give an idea of what was cut off

I double nutted the studs, and used the portable/handheld band saw to cut them off, the 90° angle grinder with 2" snading disc to smooth them back down, EASY!

OH, and that's only a 15mm spacer

and I did clean them up a little, get rid of some of that surface rust you can see

OK, did a little testing on Technology's car (THANK YOU ANDREW!)

all the pics below are without springs of any sort, and the car resting on a jack

as seen in the last post, I trimmed the stock studs down by 10mm, and now they clear the stock wheels with the 15mm spacer

http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P7120097.jpg

Now since I did some bartering with my front camber plates, I don't have any atm, so I used one of the rear mookeeh pillow balls to get the idea across

http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P7120103.jpg

This allowed use to see down into the wheel opening as well

http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10030/P7120102.jpg

At this ride height, there's still about 3" that the strut could travel upwards, and it's 1" lower than where Andrew has his car sitting currently
