mine are the run of the mill shorty style.

I am looking at any aftermarket headers that replace the factory style.I think most will fit...might have to tweak them a little.

of course custom headers would be the best

I got a set of full lengths and shortys from summit (only $100 each). The shortys fit almost perfect but I really wanted the full lengths. So I tried the full lengths and they have the out-spaced tube for the steering so I'm goin to have to moddify them a bit. The passenger side seems to be ok though.

don't go with the OEM replacement,i have that and they are restrictive.

BBK makes a nice set for the 302.Flowtech,hooker,Mac also sell nice aftermarket headers.

I also would love the long tubes but not sure they will work.If you get yours to fit, please post up details.

The passenger side appears to fit with little to no fabrication but the driver's side will require some cutting and welding. I'll make it work, just need to finish the exact placement of the motor mounts before I can go any further.

The headers on mine are custom and look top notch especially with the ceramic coating. They will run you a pretty penny though if you don't do them yourself or don't have connections. The receipts for the headers were $520 and $208 for the ceramic coating.

Were they special made or meant for a different car?

BBK makes some long tube headers that don't swing around the steering shaft on mustangs, and those would probably fit well... not sure of the part number, but it should be the standard 1 5/8 and 1 3/4" long tubes for 87-93 stangs.

I know this is an old thread and I am waking the dead...

The Explorer/Mountaineer exhaust manifolds will clear the steering box. I know those engines have a certain type of GT40 heads and I am not sure if the heads have the same bolt holes as normal heads. If they are the same, you can use the manifolds on any engine--if not, you have to use Explorer/Mountaineer heads.

As stated above, Ranger swap headers will work also. (basically they are just Explorer manifolds)

You can buy new and aftermarket replacement manifolds on ebay pretty cheap.

I saw a swap someone else did with an Explorer 302 and the factory manifold on the driver side cleared the steering box perfectly. The car was pretty fast with that exhaust also...

My headers were custom made for a Conquest with a 302 by a custom shop. The Explorer/Mountaineer idea is a great way to save a few $$ and clear the most difficult obstacle in this swap comapred to having some built.

Hope this helps!

the exploder header is on my friends car clears everything perfectly its just very restrictive

...but it will get you up and running until better options can be found. It's not very restrictive on a stock engine but would be on a modified engine.

Explorer headers are a cheaper alternative than paying $750+ for a custom set of headers to be made--unless you can build them yourself--and you will still pay a decent amount for the materials usch as welding wire, argon/CO2 gas, head flanges, collector flanges, and a BUNCH of mandrel bends that aren't cheap even in mild steel vs. stainless.

no it definetly works im not knockin that at all. i cant see spending that kind of coin on custom headers when off the shelf ones can be modified easily to fit.

I wouldn't say easily

I tried to modify a set of MAC unequal length shorties on my last 302 swap and by the time I got finished notching the tube next to the steering box, I only had about 1/4 of the thickness left. rerouting that pipe would have been a lot of work. Regular Mustang stock shorties will work using stock engine mounts, but no matter what you do you will be baking the steering box--unless you go to rack and pinion steering.

My headers cost $750 + tax + the towing to the custom shop. Luckily I didn't pay that. I bought them from the guy who did. They are well built and fit like a glove. The are pretty much full length with 1 3/4 tubes.
