Professor Quest
Top left corner: Adjustable Dial Bore Gauge. This can tell you several things INCLUDING BEARING CLEARANCE. The RULER is called a "MACHINEST SCALE". This is a "Poor Man's" straight edge. They are TEMPERD and about $35. Way cheaper than a REAL "STRAIGHT EDGE". Professor Quest
By compairing the CRANK MEASUREMENT (stock 2.36") to the BEARING ID........you now know the BEARING CLEARANCE. The DIAL BORE can also be used to find RUN-OUT in the MAIN WEBS as well as the BEARINGS.

Professor Quest
Well............we've got to find SOMETHING that has RUN-OUT! The block was PERFECT!! Â Oh yeah...........don't park your car with a water leak! I suspect this was a bad TB gasket on this 88 head. Note there are two spark plugs still in the head. They only rotated SLIGHTLY before they started to lock up. I'll leave those be for right now. The cleaning process MIGHT help if cleaner gets into the threads. But I have a feeling.............it's headed for the oven! :
JustPaus_88TSi
http://2.6liter.com/userfiles/StarPauser/Bench%20grinder,%20die%20grinders.JPG
Professor Quest
Let's CHEAT! 1/2 HP grinders are........OK, but for a few bucks more.....get a 3/4 hp. You can "STALL" a 1/2 hp. Harbor Frieght probably sells them pretty cheap. If you use gasket scrapers on the head........you'll probably scratch it and that could screw up your RUN-OUT readings. You'd better believe I do this OUTSIDE, with gloves and SAFTEY GLASSES or even a FACE SHIELD. About the time you get nailed in the EYE with a WIRE BRISSEL..........you'll be headed for EMERGENCY ROOM. If you don't have experience wire brushing parts............start with SMALLER PARTS. MAN-HANDLING that head around the grinder WITH AN OPEN WIRE WHEEL.........takes some CONCENTRATION and STRENGHT. BTW.......mounting a "BENCH GRINDER" to a work bench.........don't make it. Those HD stands are $45. Some guys build them with a truck brake drum, a peice of pipe, a peice of 1/4 flat stock and a welder. If you place it on a peice of carpet.......you'll reduce vibration almost completely.

Professor Quest
As you can see the bench grinder does a pretty good job. You just have to have the forearms to swing the weight. I've got NO DAY-LIGHT ACROSS the head. Notice the ring around the chamber from the head gasket. : You wonder why these engines blow head gaskets..............you're looking at it. This is a pic ACROSS the head between cylinders 2 and 3, and 3 and 4..........which is where they tend to blow head gaskets, HOWEVER........................................... Professor Quest
....................checking the SAME AREA LENGTH-WISE...............Hell.........I don't even need a FEELER GAGUE to see at LEAST .010 RUN-OUT. See the green? This indicates that the CENTER of the head has WARPED UPWARDS. We'll show you some "TRICKS" later on a head tear-down. BTW...........how do you know your "Straight Edge" is STRAIGHT?........................FLIP IT OVER!! It's a PRECISION TOOL.........care for it like that. Professor Quest
BTW.........that main bolt with the "BOOGER" on the threads.........this is another way to remove it. GENERAL S475 "Needle file set". Less than $20. PERFECT for cleaning those tiny electrical connectors on your car as well.
