Aftermarket Air Dams

I am about to start work on a plug for a mold of an aftermarket style front bumper that I can make more of, assuming people are interested.  I need help from all of you in deciding what you want made.  Keep in mind, these will be either fiberglass or carbon fiber depending on how layup for the cf goes.  And no, I'm not just BSing yall, this will really happen, but only in my spare time can this get done.

So, please post some of the artist renditions that you want made the most, I will pick the most popular of the ones out there and reproduce it in real life.  I am nothing more than a starquester who wants to make an aftermarket one for my car, and thought I'd share it with yall.  Pricing will be cheap too, as of right now I believe it will be $275 for fiberglas and $425 for carbon, need to check with the other guy helping me do this before I state firm prices.  Also, I will be doing replicas of the stock 88/89 air dams to replace the diminishing supply of stock urethane ones.

Let me know if anyone is interested, each one will be made to order.

here are a few I did last year, not too much different than stock

And a drawing I did of phinko's idea, slightly wilder, but not my taste

Also if anyone has an idea that they would like to see, I would be more than happy to do a sketch of it for you.

I think I like the first two but would like other peoples input on it first.  I also might start making side skirts, and rear diffusers to complete the package.  I think it is about time someone starts making tasteful body kits for these cars.

This is now probably going to have to wait until the spring to get completed.  I've been busting my a** building a Formula SAE car and it probably won't be done any time soon.  It's my first priority right now, need to get that out of the way before I start getting crazy with fiberglass.

I agree, D_Venable's first two drawings are freakin awesome!  Best concept I've seen, I love the splitter!

Yes the splitter looks nice but you also have to look at the functionality of the air dam.

Physics says all objects take the path of least resistance (especially gasses- IE air).

So you look at the stock bottom lip, and you can see it goes pretty much to the base of the intercooler. This helps ELMINATE an escape path for air to AVOID the intercooler.

Unfourtunately, D's design OPENS that ENTIRE area up, removing all resistance, allowing air to hit the intercooler and flow down its face, under, or otherwise around in, not THROUGH it.

This action completely negates the purpose of the intercooler. Yes air WILL STILL flow through, but not nearly as much if you remove its availible escape paths.

Just some food for thought...

Look cool, or funtionality...

Yes, the aussies do have have front airdams,  but they are for the flatties.  That and I'm not a big fan of the looks of most of them

I remember seing a pic of a white widebody with different color stripes on the fenders with a different airdam.  Or was I dreaming ::).  However, I am with you on some of those airdams.

Believe it was the same style paint job but a dailydriver, but it could be it.  The pic I remember was taken at a get together.  I also remember a red starquest with chrome 18's and a aftermaket wing on it.  Oh well maybe I will come across it.  I looked at it again that is probably the same car.

I suggest you have a look thru the body mods section on austarion http://austarion.ipspace.com/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=5 there are a few other air dams that we have also used. But none will fit without some minor modifications.

you may be correct...but it would be more encouragement to get a bigger intercooler or modify the stock intercooler to mount lower and more perpendicular to the road rather than being angled.

oh, as i guess you figured out from my post...i like the first pic of the air dams. ever since i saw that one i've been thinking of some way to make that happen. same with the rear air diffuser. definitely gotta have one for my car...one way or another...

Yes that would be better. But still not the best.

For the absolute best performance you want a solid flow path with little or no air escape path.

I never said I did not like the design, because I do like it, cosmetically. But cosmetics do not make it the best design points.

Take in point the A-10 Warthog. An ugly plane that takes getting used to. But it is specific built, and in that specific purpose, nothing else is better.

The point, not everything that is pretty is useful, and not everything useful is pretty.

That's my Zen lesson for the day. ;)

Just want to give an update on what's goin on with this.  Been trying to avoid posting this...  The project is going to be put off until spring or summer.  I'm swamped right now with college and building formula cars.  We are about to start building an all new car with no parts changeover from other years and need to have it completed by mid March..... Yes, 4 months to build a car from scratch.  This will definately happen now that i'm pretty sure I'm keeping my car and it needs to be done for the community.  Now if everyone could just agree as to what style will be done since I only really see the need to do OEM replacement and 1 non stock one.

Maybe something like my bumper. it's all one piece with a bigger whole for the intercooler. it's just looks though, you can stand the intercooler straight up and down like i did and get max flow to it. but maybe with an 88-89 style air dam.

I like the first 2 pictures, I am sure you can make a lip or something that would go fromt he bumper or splitter to the intercooler that would follow the factory air dam, this is a cool bumper itdea, maybe this will also give everyone a chance to go bigger int he IC, count me in for one, but only ina carbon fiber, Fiber Glass suck!
